Glenn's Journal for 11-7-02 Cape Town We are up around 7:15 am as we have to pack our bags to move tonight as well as be ready by 8:30 am for the Baz Bus to pick us up for our day trip to Cape Point. We enjoyed breakfast upstairs in the kitchen and had moved our luggage to a storage area in time for the 8:30 am pickup. The Baz bus arrived around 9:00 am where we met the other 14 people joining us on the day trip. We started down the west coast by Clifton Bay (good beaches here) and Camps Bay on the way to Hout Bay. At Hout Bay we have an optional boat ride to Duiker Island, otherwise known as Seal Island, as this is where young seals spend their time while growing up. Erin took some really good photos as the boat pulled up right next to the island and seals playing in the water right next to the boat. After our stop at Hout Bay we drove across to the east side and Boulder Beach. Boulder Beach is well known for the many African penguins that inhabit this beach area. The penguins are also known as jack-ass penguins for the donkey like crooning sound they make. After a little time here we were off towards Cape Point. Once we entered the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve we parked near the entrance where we converted to bikes and rode the next 10 kilometers to Olifantsbos Point where we enjoyed lunch along the beach. While riding through the park and sitting at the beach we saw ostrich, baboons, and some of the local flora. We then moved on to Cape Point where we walked up to the lighthouse at the point. We spent a few minutes on top before returning to the parking lot where we continued our walk to the Cape of Good Hope. We had some beautiful views from the most south-western point in Africa. Cape Agulhas is the southern most point in Africa. Most people also recognize this point as where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet but this is also not true. After our tour around Cape Point we stopped by an Ostrich farm on the way back to Cape Town. We drove by Schuster's Bay and Scarborough before returning to the east coast and back to Cape Town. We arrived around 6:00 pm at the hostel and had a few drinks at the bar while we waited for Renate to pick us up. She arrived a little after 7:00 pm, as scheduled, and off we went to our new accommodations. The apartment was awesome and is a fully furnished 2 bedroom with kitchen, living and dining room. We were pretty psyched to get a place for only 180 rand ($18) per night. We would recommend it to everyone. We settled in while Renate went off to the gym. She returned a little later and we had dinner and chatted before retiring for the evening. Tomorrow Renate will pick us up at 8:00 am, on her way to work, and drop us off in town. We plan on hiking up Table Mountain in the morning. |
