Erin's South Africa Journals - 11-04-02

Today was our arrival in South Africa. We woke up early in our Nairobi hotel and quickly packed, ate breakfast, and jumped in the taxi. The streets were crowded, but our driver was obviously a pro and got us to the airport in plenty of time. We checked in after a brief bag check, then went to wait for our gate to be announced. I was suddenly irritable after being ready to leave for 5 days already, so the additional 4 security checks we had to endure en route to our plane were an annoyance. But ya gotta do it!
The flight to Johannesburg wasn't too bad, and during our layover there we got to meet up with Kevin, whom we'd met up at Lake Baringo on safari. He was back at work at the airport in Joburg and was kind enough to seek us out behind our security barrier! He gave us a recommendation on a hostel to stay at in Cape Town, and we had fun chatting before our flight.  Then the short two hour flight to Cape Town flew by, and we were soon collecting our bags and contacting the Sunflower Spot backpackers hostel for a ride.
It took a while for the driver to pick us up, but we didn't mind as the weather was breezy & clear and we had fantastic views of mountains all around and a blue sky. We've been needing the beach and beauty for almost 3 weeks now! We arrived at the hostel and were shown around, then quickly settled in and talked to some folks at the bar until past dinnertime. We intended to go walk somewhere for dinner, but when we went to our room to put on shoes, we decided to crash instead! A relaxing beginning to our stay in South Africa!
