| A Koala and baby sitting among the trees along the road to the Cape Otway Lightstation. Recommended drive!! |
| Glenn's Journals 12-11-02 Great Ocean Road Erin and I awoke around 7:30 am and prepared for the day. After I showered i went out to the local IGA food store and bought a few things for breakfast. I returned around 8:20 am and had time to load the car before we went upstairs for breakfast. We had fun with breakfast as we tried to cram four people in a kitchen built for one. We worked it all out and chatted our way through breakfast before we realized that we needed to get the day started. We departed ways around 9:30 am and told them we would see them on Friday night on the ferry to Tasmania. Erin and I stopped at the Blue Lakes for a view before finding our way to the Umpherton Sinkhole. The sinkhole was quite interesting and well done. It also included relatively tame possums that were being fed by some kids that were visiting. Once we were back on the road we made our way through Port Campell before making our way to Apolla Bay. During the drive we stopped at the London Bridge and the 12 Apostles rock formations. The whole trip was along the Great Ocean Road. On our final leg into Apollo Bay we made our way towards Cape Otway Lightstation. The lightstation was closed by the time we arrived but we were mostly there to see the koala's sitting in the trees. We managed to find a few and even hear a male koala make a loud howling noise. After he made the call a few other koala's in the distace made the same call in return. We are not sure what it meant but it was interesting. After the scenic drive we made our way into town. We stopped into the backpackers recommended in the guide book but decided to pass. We have become pretty spoiled with the flexibility the car offers and having found other accomodation just as nice as a hostel for a similiar price. After a few stops we found the Bay Pines Hotel and for $50 Aus we had a ensuite room overlooking the ocean. What a find!!! We dropped our bags and headed back into town for dinner. The restaurant that we found was closing up but had two plates of Spaghetti Bolognese left. We also bought milk for morning breakfast. We returned to our room where we watched television, worked on journals, and read for a while before calling it a night. Tomorrow we are off to Melbourne to stay with friends. |
