One of many issues that concern me during this time of Republican leadership is the tax code. President Bush has mentioned that he wishes to reform it and I noticed several Republicans were elected who believe in replacing income taxes with a system based on sales tax. The Brookings Institute has given several reasons why the sales tax only system would be a disaster and I believe that the Center for American Progress has put forth a reasonable alternative. As they state "corporations have largely been able to avoid their obligation to pay taxes...The result is an increase reliance on a regressive payroll tax, which falls most heavily on lower- and middle-income taxpayers." I hope you will consider offering this as alternative to Bush's plan rather than simply opposing Bush’s plan. Democrats have been labeled more and more as obstructionists and I believe by offering real, substantial alternatives to Republican plans and nominees more voters will realize that Democrats are trying to look out for them and improve the government that serves them. Thank you, |
