Politics of a Portlander
Senator McCain has created a bill (Bill # S.271) that has bi-partisan support, so much so that polar opposites Trent Lott (R-MS) and Charles Schumer (D-NY) are both sponsors. This makes me think that the bill will pass and also wonder if this law will be enough to prevent special interest groups from exerting the sort of excessive influence that we have seen in recent elections. Campaign advertisements need to be subjected to truth in advertising laws, so that special interest groups cannot run attack ads that amount to nothing more than libel and slander and keep issue ads from exaggerating and misleading people to try to influence their vote.
The issue of honesty is a major issue for campaign reform, but the amounts given to or spent on campaigns by special interest groups and corporations must be limited the same way that individuals are limited to prevent anyone or any group from exerting more influence on elections than other citizens simply because they have more money.
I hope this legislation will force equity and fairness in campaigns, this issue needs to be addressed before another election that goes so negative with so much influence being given to so few people.
