Lesson 3A- DUE: January 15th- A study of turn over rates in terms of Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers In the five past years at Hogwarts we've seen a turnover rate of more than one Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher per year. While we don't yet know who is going to be the teacher for Harry's fifth year we can look at the last six specimens to be the teacher, who they were, what they did, and why they quit. Professor Quirrel- Used to be a respected Hogwarts teacher of the Dark Arts but on his travels in Albania while trying to get some real world experience, he met the Dark Lord. He allowed the Dark Lord to possess his body and was found subsquently drinking unicorn's blood and trying to steal the sorcerer's stone (see definitions). His eventual defeat caused by Dumbledore and Harry Potter, rendered him dead. He was unable to come back to work the next year for those reasons. Professor Lockhart: He was the only man to apply for the job in this year. He got the job by default. He has written many books about his supposed travels and is known for his supposed defeat of the Wagga Wagga Werewolf. He has recieved the honor of Merlin Third Class and Witch's Weekly Smile of the Year Award 5 years running. He is very self absorbed and steals other people's accomplishments by using a powerful memory charm one of the few spells he's good at using. He used Ronald Weasley's broken wand to put the Memory Charm on Harry and Ron but it backfired and got himself instead. He is currently at St. Mungo's and will probably never fully recover. Professor Lupin: A superb teacher that taught dangerous creatures and how to fight them incredibly well. Some of the monsters they covered were Kappas and Boggarts. Unfortunately he was discovered to be a werewolf and left on account of wizard fear and mistrust of werewolves. His name also appeared in the Sirius Black Scandal that year, another mark on his name. Homework: (Please neomail in answers with full complete sentences for full credit... also check the submission requirements) 1. Who was the first teacher mentioned? Why did he leave? What was he trying to steal? 2. What happened to Professor Lockhart? 3. What creature did Professor Lupin turn about to be? EXTRA CREDIT: In your own opinion (4-6 sentences) Who has been the most interesting of the teachers so far encountered at Hogwarts. Meaning who's story do you find the best and why? Lesson 3B- DUE: Last Day Of January- A study of turn over rates in terms of Defense Against the Dark Arts Teachers- if you have not read the fifth book this lesson is a little bit of a spoiler. Professor "Mad Eye" Moody: While this professor never actually taught the children at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry he was hired to do so. After a long career as an Auror he has been quite a jumpy character sometimes jinxing his garbage cans for something as silly as a normal muggle raccoon. Some say he killed someone for coming up behind him and shouting "Boo!" A few days before his teaching career was slated to begin, he was attacked by Bartemis Crouch, Jr. (see next description) and was unable to start work as originally intended. He was found locked in his trunk, near death, just last year. "Professor" Bartemis Crouch Jr.: While never hired to teach the defense against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts he still managed to assume that position while using Polyjuice Potion to look like "Mad Eye" Moody (see description above). He taught the children the Unforgivable Curses and ended up being a pretty good teacher except for his deranged attack on Harry towards the end of the book. If the Dark Lord, Harry Potter, & Cedric Diggory hadn't met up at the end of the year he probably could've gotten away with it. Bartemis Crouch Jr. was known for his sentence to Azkaban for supporting the Dark Lord. The sentencing was done by his father, Bartemis Crouch Sr. Professor Delores Umbridge: Became the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts when the School was under attack because of Dumbledore's stance on Voldemort's return. She came to meddle in the affairs of the school. She did not do any practical lessons with the students and this left especially the fifth years largely unprepared for the OWL Exams. This sparked up the DA, ("Dumbledore's Army"). |
