Lesson 1A- Due November 19th-
Hogwarts was founded over 1000 years ago by four of the most famous wizards and witches ever: Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Godric Gryffindor. For Lesson 1A- you will read about Slytherin and Hufflepuff. For lesson 1B- due at the end of the month, you will read about Ravenclaw and Gryffindor.

Salazar Slytherin: Slytherin of fen was both the first head teacher and founder of Slytherin House. He especially prized those of great cunning and "pure-blood." This belief that "pure-blooded" wizards were better than those of "mixed" or muggle parentage caused a great divide in the school. Once Slytherin left, things became much better at the school; however, some of that divide is still felt at Hogwarts today. (The legend of the Chamber of Secrets will be discussed in a later lesson.)

One of Slytherin's most famous attributes was his shrewd ways. His cunning manner led many to distrust him and his gift of Parseltongue, the ability to talk to snakes. His house's symbol, the serpent, is representative of his great and rare ability. One of the few living people that still have the gift of Parseltongue is the famous, Harry Potter.

Helga Hufflepuff- Sweet Hufflepuff from Valley Broad was both the first head teacher and founder of Hufflepuff House. She sided with Gryffindor and Ravenclaw against Slytherin on the issue of wizarding parentage that led to Slytherin's eventual departure from the school. Less is known about Hufflepuff and her friend Ravenclaw than is known about the male founders.

Hufflepuff was known for her even temper and her willingness to teach anybody with a thirst for learning. If they were willing to work hard then they were worthy of admission to her house. Hufflepuff's animal the beaver is one of the hardest working animals. It has been known to work for hours a day to help protect itself!

Homework: (

Lesson 1B- Due the last day of November-

Hogwarts was founded over 1000 years ago by four of the most famous wizards and witches ever: Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Godric Gryffindor. For Lesson 1A- you will read about Slytherin and Hufflepuff. For lesson 1B- due at the end of the month, you will read about Ravenclaw and Gryffindor.

Rowena Ravenclaw: Ravenclaw from Glen was both the first head teacher and founder of Ravenclaw House. She sided with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff against Slytherin on the issue of wizarding parentage that led to Slytherin's eventual departure from the school. Less is known about Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw than is known about the male founders.

Ravenclaw especially prized intelligent students. Anyone of intelligence and magical ability could've found admission in the Ravenclaw House. Ravenclaw was one of the cleverest witches of her age and was well known for her magical abilities. The raven, the house's symbol, is one of the smartest birds to honor of Ravenclaw.

Godric Gryffindor- Gryffindor from Wild Moor was both the first head teacher and founder of Gryffindor House. He sided with Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw against Slytherin on the issue of wizarding parentage that led to Slytherin's eventual departure from the school. One of the bravest men of his age he is well known for his ruby encrusted sword that was held in the Sorting Hat which eventually led to the demise of the monster of Slytherin (Will be explained in the lesson about the Chamber of Secrets.) The current sorting hat was originally Gryffindor's as it was his idea to use the hat to help sort future generations of young wizards.

Gryffindor was known for his respect of bravery and accepted only the bravest students into his house. The lion, one of the fiercest and fearless animals known to Muggle-kind, represents those that are brave enough to be admitted.
