BY MR. ABSTAIN (4-8-04) I visited Clark University and Tufts University yesterday and I wanted to tell you a little about both. Clark--- Clark was founded in 1887 by Jonas Clark. It is strongest in psychology and geography. It offers many scholarship programs and a "fifth year free" program where you stay at Clark and get your Masters degree in your last year. It is in Worcester, MA. 3.5/5 stars for niceness, 3.5/5 stars for name. Tufts--- Tufts was founded by Charles Tufts. It is well known for its engineering school which is the only engineering school in the US that graduates more engineers than it took in. It's "excollege" allows students, staff, and community members to teach classes that are not normally run. It is by far the most interesting thing about Tufts. 3/5 stars for niceness, 4.5/5 stars for name. Niceness= my impression of the college. Name= Shock of the name, Harvard, (for instance,) being so well known and attracting such good students would recieve a 5/5. BY: MR. ABSTAIN (4-8-04) SAT scores from the March administration of the SAT are in... yours truly did very well and ended up within the top 10% of scorers. The SAT is one of the most trumped up tests of our time but there are some great schools that don't require any SATs at all including Bowdoin College in ME and there are a great many others that don't require SAT IIs including Northeastern University in MA. Before you register for the SATs this June take a look at colleges that you are interested in. Some have very strict requirements like Tufts engineering program and some have much fewer requirements on which SATs you should take, one example is Cornell University: College of Arts and Sciences in NY.

BY MR. ABSTAIN (4-17-04) SATs are just a mere two weeks away! Studying and nervousness are always at an extreme high during these weeks. Collegeboard.com and Number2.com offer free SAT tutoring help. If you don't do as well as you hope to don't be discouraged! You still have time to take it over. If you haven't already you should consider signing up for an SAT class Kaplan and Princeton Review are two popular choices or if you do better by yourself, tutoring. Both are extremely expensive so you should also consider SAT video prep tapes or other cheaper means of studying. BY MR ABSTAIN (4-17-04) Why a community college? More and more students are going to local and community colleges than ever before! Why the sudden upsurgence? The cost! A private institution can have tuitions upward of $20,000 and with room/board the cost can be upwards of 30 or even 40 thousand dollars. Studies have shown that people that got to their local CC (Community College) are no worse off than those that go to four year schools for their whole college career. You should seriously consider CCs as a possible stop on your career especially if your family is not wealthy or if you are considering going to graduate school.
By: Mr. Abstain (5-14) SAT scores are up again for all of those who are eager to get there scores. SAT II subject scores can be dissapointing but don't let the percentages or the numbers get you down. Almost all colleges will simply take the highest scores you get on the SATs, if you are worried study hard over the summer! Force yourself to concentrate on it. By Mr. Abstain (5-14) Financial Aid can be very a confusing alphabet soup and with so many sources its so easy to miss them. Local Sources- Your temple, local shops, church, school, or other community organization may have a scholarship for you! Ask someone who would know about these sort of things, these are hardest to find. National Sources- The Discover Card Tribute Awards for High School Juniors (www.aasa.org) for example. These are private funds given by large or national companies/organizations. Check collegeboard.com and fastweb.com for two great search engines of scholarships. Federal/State Sources- The biggest source of money for college but is usually just for the poorest families so its possible that those of us with family incomes of over $60-80,000 will miss out on this source of loans and grants. The FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) is required by most schools to determine need based financial aid. School Sources- Many institutions of Higher Education have their own sources of aid some is merit based for achievement in high school (academically, sports, musical ability, etc...) and some give their own need based financial aid. Find out about school's individualized financial aid program if it is an issue before you should apply. As they say however, don't let the cost of a school deter you... financial aid is a definite possiblity. Interested in writing for us? Write your article and submit it to us. NEXT ARTICLE IS UP!
