Description of Phoenix Project (Last update Nov-28-1999):
This project aims to realize a test bench for hybrid rocket engines with thrusts up to 1000N.
We use HTPB (and sometimes PE) as the solid fuel and, at first, GOX as the oxidizer, while in a near future we plan to replace it with H2O2.
Our test bench will also be used to study non conventional nozzles, like plug and clustered nozzles.
The facility for the experimental tests is actually under construction at DISIS's PropLab, located in the F52 building of the Grazzanise Military Airport, home for the 9th Wing "F.Baracca".
The test bench facility consists of:
- Combustion chamber and its bearing structure.
- Feed Line (to feed the chamber with hypergolic-startup liquids, oxidizer and N2 for shutting off).
- DAQ system: two PCs, one SCXI device, one oscilloscope and related probes.
Leaders of Project Phoenix team are Prof.ssa A.RussoSorge of the Federico II and Prof. G.Torella of the Accademia Aeronautica di Pozzuoli, the students actually involved are F.Liccardo (computational analysis and computer control of the facility), G.Quaranta (set up of the acquisition system and project managing) and M.Roma [remove "nospam." from e-mail address]((project and set up of the test bench).
