Have you ever tried writing a poem in limerick form? Did you find it to be a tricky little form, given the odd number of lines, and the short, rhyming 3rd and 4th lines? If so, then you will be doubly appreciative of the effort in this next poem. The challenge was to write consecutive limericks that run together as a story. To up the ante, the storyline should be one addressing the topics, problems, and issues confronting University students, particularly in their first year away from home. This poem could be a useful starting point to begin a discussion on the various issues that students face, and an understanding of the consequences of their decisions. The poem alludes to several topics, such as; - manners and treatment of other people - the effects of poor nutrition - The effects of drinking lots of cheap wine - Smoking and it's effect on other people. - Regular exercise - The effects of junk food - Binge drinking - Drinking to excess - Sex issues - 'Brewers droop' (Alcohol related impotence) - Recreational drug use/abuse and it's effect on others - Drug use/abuse and it's effects on the user - Simple solutions based on choices. All this and more, simply using Limericks! ... |
