| April 27th, 2001 marked Ace Frehley's 50th full year on this planet. To celebrate, I decided to go to school in Ace make-up. I did the same for Paul Stanley's birthday last year; no one seemed to have a problem with it. Sure, people asked me about it, made fun of me for it, but no more than people already make fun of me for being the one and only KISS chick in the entire school. 2001 is a brand new year, though, with brand new problems. I got called down to the office second period in the middle of a test and was told to take the make-up off. Why? "Because it's offensive." "How can wearing too much make-up to school be offensive?" "Some people might find it offensive." "How? It's not a swastika or anything. It's a symbol of the band KISS. There's no religious, cult, or disrespectful connotation." If wearing too much make-up is offensive, they should suspend half the chicks in my school. The assistant principal then changed his reason to it being a distraction. That I understand, but people in my school dress up with piercings and bright colored hair (I used to have green hair...only for a month, though) and they're not called a "distraction." People have piercings and brightly colored shirts and so on, but they're not labeled as such. What makes me different? He didn't show me a rule that said I had to remove it, so, I said I wouldn't. He said that there is no documented rule, like there is no written rule of how long skirts should be, and it's up to the school's discretion. If they would have shown me a rule that dictated I had to take it off, I would have begrudgingly taken it off and that would be the end of that. What made this year any different than the last? What rule changed? None. So, if it was okay last year, it is now, seeing how no new rule was written. I'm not going around school with a knife, gun, whatever, or making threats, or saying I'm going to kill everyone because they're not a KISS fan or "We're all gonna die!" or anything of the sort. So open your mind and get off my back, right? The school administration lets the seniors get dressed up for Halloween. Is that not a distraction? How is that day different from any other day? People are expecting it on Halloween, but not any other day, so it shouldn't be tolerated? Just because the school thinks I should do something doesn't mean I think I should. It doesn't mean I'll do it just because they told me to either. My parents were cool with it. I didn't do anything wrong; I was being myself; I wasn't hurting anyone or anything, and I stuck up for what I believe in. They didn't enjoy the fact that I was sent home, but they agreed with me for sticking up for myself against what I thought was pure discrimination. "Open some minds every day...or at least try to." - my motto. I've already put a stop to some double standards in my school. I've changed 2 rules/policies in the school administration. The powers that be at my school found my KISS bandana to be offensive. How so? Because it has the KISS logo on it? All it says is KISS - plain and simple. No marijuana leaves, no curses, no middle fingers...just K-I-S-S. Other girls were coming to school in "pretty" pink pastel bandanas and I get picked because mine is "offensive?" I don't think so. So, the very next year they changed it to simply no bandanas period. The other rule, I won't go into here because this page's not pertaining to it. I live in an extremely conservative, staunch republican community (against my own will). Every once in a while, people need to be kicked in the butt, so to speak. And, by the way, that's including myself. |
