Ash –Shawkhani [one of the greatest faqihs. (1173-1250)] said: “This hadeeth is one of the basis of the religion. Although this is only one hadeeth, it deserves to be explained in a volume by itself.” The scholars held this hadith in such a high position that they would usually start their books by mentioning this hadeeth, in order for those who seek knowledge of the religion to start their quest by correcting their niyyah(intention).
Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab said: My father, Umar ibn al-Khattab, told me: One day we were
sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle
when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes, his hair extraordinarily
black. There were no signs of travel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last he sat with
the Apostle (peace be upon him) He knelt before him placed his palms on his thighs and said:
Muhammad, inform me about Islam .
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger
of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform
pilgrimage (Haj) if you are solvent enough (to bear the expense of) the journey. The Inquirer
said: You have told the truth. Umar ibn al-Khattab said: It amazed us that he would put the
question and then he would himself verify the truth.
The Inquirer said: Inform me about
Iman (faith).
The Holy Prophet replied: It is to believe in
Allah, in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day of Judgment, and to believe in
the Divine Decree about good and evil. The Inquirer said: You have told the truth.
the
Inquirer again said: Inform me about Ihsan.
The Holy Prophet said: That you worship Allah as if you
are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you.
the Inquirer again
said: Inform me about the hour (of the Doom).
The Holy Prophet remarked: One who is asked
knows no more than the one who is inquiring (about it).
the Inquirer said: Tell me some of
its indications.
The Holy Prophet said: That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress
and master, that you will find barefooted, destitute goat-herds vying with one another in the
construction of magnificent buildings.
Umar ibn al-Khattab said: Then The
Inquirer went on his way but I stayed with The Holy Prophet for a long while. He then, said to
me: Umar, do you know who this Inquirer was? I replied: Allah and His Apostle knows best. the
Holy Prophet remarked: He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instruct you in
matters of religion.
(Sahih Muslim Hadith 1.1)
The word "Islam" is an Arabic word which means total submission to the will of Allah. It is derived from the root word SLM and salam means peace (shalom in Hebrew). As such, the religion of Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to God and live according to His Divinely revealed Law. The most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God (called Allah in Arabic), thus all human beings should submit to Allah. Islam is not a new religion at all. It is the same religion brought by all the prophets and Messengers of God for the guidance of humanbeing. Islam was the religion of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus(Peace be upon them). The first man created by Allah was Adam, He was also the first Prophet. Every Prophet from Adam to the last Prophet ie Muhammad (Peace be upon them) spread the message of Islam.
He(Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (way of life - Islam) which He
enjoined on Nuh (Noah) - and which We have revealed to you O Muhammad -
and which We enjoined on Ibrahim (Abraham) and Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus):
"Establish the Deen of Al-Islam and make no division (sects) in it."
("Noble Qur'an" Surah Ash Shura, verse: 13)
This day have I
perfected your religion for you completed my favor upon you and have
chosen for you Islam as your religion.
("Noble Qur'an" Surah Al Maida(5), verse: 3)
Since true faith fills the heart with comfort, security, reassurance and contentment, and makes man feel that he has a strong relationship with Almighty Allah, Who alone is the Creator of man and everything visible and invisible and knows best what achieves man’s well-being and happiness. Therefore, one of the biggest barriers to real happiness both in this world and the Hereafter is the rejection of Allah’s true religion (i.e., Islam).
The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of Allah, regardless of their race, nationality, language or ethnic background. Being a Muslim entails willful submission and active obedience to Allah, and living in accordance with His message. it is in submitting to Allah's Will that human beings gain peace in their lives in this world and in the hereafter. Everything and every phenomenon in the world, other than man is administered totally by God-made laws i.e. they are obedient to God and submissive to His laws i.e. they are in the STATE OF ISLAM. Only Humanbeing has been given intelligence and choice, thus he is invited to submit to the good will of Allah and obey His law ie. become a Muslim.
According to the Ulama (Islamic Scholars), the Islamic Shariat consists of five branches. It is essential for every Muslim to adopt all five branches of the shariat.
‘Verily those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear , nor shall they grieve.’
("Noble Qur'an" Surah-al-Baqarah (2), verse: 62)
O Prophet, We have sent you to the entire mankind, to give them
good news and forewarn them, but most men do not know.
("Noble Qur'an" Surah Saba (34), verse: 28)
