What is Global Citizenship?

Oxfam (1997) has been working for twenty years in formal education trying to develop innovative classroom resources and strategies that encourage an understanding of global issues and interdependence. In the course of this mission, it has developed a Curriculum for Global Citizenship. This curriculum builds on existing good practice and recommends that knowledge, skills, and values and attitudes to which they believe young people are entitled to enable them to develop as Global Citizens. Many of the ideas and principles this curriculum is said to promote are reflected in what teachers may know and already teaching: multi-cultural, anti-racist, development, or environmental education, therefore making Global Citizenship not a new curriculum on its own but one that is integrated in all subjects. Oxfam's Curriculum for Global Citizenship has one specific and unique focus that is to make the students respond to the challenge of poverty.
