What makes a parent hurt their child?

What makes them abuse their own flesh and blood and then scare them into silence?

Why would a father sexually abuse his only child and then threaten this same child with violence if they told?

Why would a mother beat her two eldest children and threaten to abandon them if they told?

When the authorities do find out, why do these same parents lie and humiliate their children, claiming the children are the liars?

Don't these parents realize what they are doing to their children not only in the present but in the long run as well?  Do they even care?

Children shouldn't be hurt in such vile ways, we all know that and agree.  We all, as adults, also know and agree how wrong it is, how criminal it is, to take children not even in puberty yet as sex partners.  This is especially so if the children are our own.  We know and agree that it is very wrong to use children as punching bags.  Despite this, child abuse in all forms continue.

People complain about how kids today act, but noone cares about why they do what they do.  Child abuse is prevalent in our society and as a whole, we are all suffering for it.  The future of our nation are growing up in pain, anger, disillusionment and perversion because of how their parents are treating them.

Abuse is a dirty word, but it happens every day and not just to children.  Senior citizens are also victims.

We must stop hiding our heads in the sand where abuse it concerned and start doing something about it.  We must stop blaming the children for acting out.  We must start protecting those who can't protect themselves, children and the elderly alike.

We must become communities again, like in the Depression Era and before, when families looked after each other, neighbors shared childrearing with neighbors.  We should stop being afraid to tell Johnny's mom what he's doing when she's not around, and Johnny's mom should not think we're interfering.

I know in these communities abuse was hidden , but we know better now.  We know that abuse is wrong and is harmful to children and elderly alike.  We need to encourage extended families and communities such as I have described, to stop the abuse, to stem the tide if nothing else, before our whole society collapses.
