A while back, I was asked why I write by a fellow author, and this got me to seriously thinking about the subject.

I could say that I write because I can't not write, but that would just return us to the original questoin- why?

My first answer, in the past, was always my desire to simply tell a story, but I've since reexamined what I actually write.  In addition to my novels, I also write short stories, poems, articles such as this one and varied content for my website.  These things serve to negate that old glib answer.

So, why do I write?  I would have to say, now, that it's because writing is my primary form of expression, my first choice when needing to create something.  I also do needlepoint, but that's a different medium altogether.

Writing, whether fiction or non, requires creativity on the part of the writer.  I shape words and sentences to create the vision I see in my head.  A great deal of thought and effort goes into my writing, just as if I were to work with any other kind of artform.

I write to express myself as well.  I tell a story my way, convey an idea the best way I know how and lastly, I make a mark on the world, even in a small way.  I want to be remembered.  I want to influence someone for the better.  Foremost, and most important of all, I want my sons to be proud of me.  That's why I write.
