R3rd Edition Fiction
Starfire Assistant. A site run by Steve Walmsley for his program Starfire Assistant(SA). SA is a program written to handle a LOT of the paperwork assocated with running a Starfire campaign. In addition, Steve has written a "Diary" of the Rigellian empire, which is a microsoft word document currently over 480 pages/780 KB (compressed). [To view the diary, go to Steve's site, and look for the "Diary" link.] Needless to say, Steve is a HUGE Starfire fan....
As Steve keeps a MSWord copy of his diary at his website, I will only be posting the most recent turns of his campaign. The rest can be obtained from Steve's website, or by downloading from here.
Interlude 01. (8 KB) Posted: 19 Apr 2002. Campaign Date: Turn 153 (approx.). And interlude from the Khanate of Aztica, detailing the breakdown in relationship between them and the Drax. [NOTE: This interlude is NOT included in Steve's copy of the diary (see below for link to the complete diary).]
Steve has updated the Rigellian Diary to the most current turn, and it can be found here, or you can just download it direct (without going to Steve's website) here. At 753 pages, 1.2 meg zipped, and over 4 meg unzipped, the diary is getting LARGE!!!!
What has gone on before...... (A quick summary of what is included in the diary)
The Rigellians and the Octupii were two races that Steve started the campaign with (the Rigellians being the main race). At about month 40 (I think), Steve started the Arachnids as the main enemy race. They were quickly established (one of the advantages of the Arachnids is that they grow at an increased rate), and contact between the Arachnids and the other two races were soon established - leading to war.
With the larger economy, the Arachnids were mainly on the offensive, with Octupii systems bearing the brunt of the attacks. The offensives were eventually defeated, mainly through the Octupii and Rigellians developing superior technology (for example, by Month 50 or so, the Rigellians had Capital Missiles, whereas the Arachnids didn't reveal possession of the missiles until a number of turns later).
By month 100, the technological superiority allowed the Rigellians to gain the upper hand. This, and the discovery of TWO closed WP's into major Arachnid systems, meant that in addition to the technological superiority, the Rigellians also had an economic superiority as well. (Also, at about this time, the Octupii were attacked by a irrational "Stalinist" race - the Tzar which were defeated by a Rigellian offensive - which resulted in the genocide of the Tzar race.)
And so, Steve then brought in two more protagonists - the Andromedans (a machine race) and the Kapaluans (a higher tech race). Again, it was the Octupii that faced the brunt of the Kapaluan offensives. (The Andromedan offensives were faced by both the Rigellians and the Octupii, but as the Rigellians didn't have to face the Kapaluans, this meant that they were able to defeat the Andromedans and get them to agree to a ceasefire.)
However, this meant that the Octupii still faced the Andromedans alone.....
After a offensive by the Rigellians in Month 163, this defeated the Kapaluan forces in Octupii space, with the Rigellians arbitarily annexing a number of Octupii systems.
And so the situation is, that the Andromedans are continuing their offensive against the Octupii, while the Rigellians concentrate on hunting down the remenants of the Arachnids.....
Rigel Turn 162. (77 KB) Posted: 30 Mar 2004. Campaign Date: Turn 162. It appears that Steve decided to do a little diplomatic "housecleaning", and form partnerships/amalgamations with a LOT of the minor races (such as the Achillians, who are amalgamated with the Rigellians, the Kingdom of Bismark - who merge with the Holy Dragon Empire and the Khanate of Aztica who partnership with the Rigellians). In another diplomatic surprise, the Trajans request(!!!) assitance, when they run into the Kapaluans in Lion.
On a similar note, we finally learn the fate of the Talosian home system (it was cut off by the Kapaluan's attack into Leviathan). On a final note, we see the start (and end) of a civil war on Terra, as well as the start of what must be the largest offense ever seen (covered in the next posting - "Rigel Turn 163 Preview").
Rigel Turn 163 Preview. (8 KB) Posted: 20 Apr 2004. Campaign Date: Turn 163 (Preview). With over 43000 hullspaces, and nearly 7000 fighters, the offensive against the Kapaluan's must be one of the largest offensives ever seen. Now to see if it suceeds.......(EVIL GRIN)
Rigel Turn 163 Preview Map. (48 KB) Posted: (Not Applicable). Campaign Date: Turn 163 (Preview). This is a sample map I made using Graphviz, showing a small map of the Leviathan (and surrounding areas), with fleet locations - just to help people when trying to visualise which fleet is going......
Rigel Turn 163. (161 KB) Posted: 02 June 2004. Campaign Date: Turn 163. The Rigellians launch more offensives against the Bugs, as well as the Drax (with their allies, the Aztican and United Planets Association). In addition, the Kapaluan threat is removed, resulting in even more damage to the Octupii. And finally, the Andromedans reveal a nasty tactic against the Octupii.
Turn 164. (34 KB) Posted: 30 Jun 2004. Campaign Date: Month 164. With the end of the Kapaluan war, the Rigellians spend up big on technology gained as part of the peace treaty. The Octupii start to build up a decent fleet to defend their core systems, as well as embarking on a large infrastructure buildup - with a large number of new shipyards started. And finally, the Rigellians find a way into a cut-off section of Octupii space, and plan on running a bluff on the attacking Andromedan forces - if they threaten the sector. If they don't, then perhaps the Rigellians will end up annexing it, much like what happened around Leviathan......GRIN
Turn 165. (30 KB) Posted: 12 Jul 2004. Campaign Date: Month 165. With over 55% of the Rigellian economy going toqwards maintaining the armed forces, a significant effort is made to increasing the size of the Rigellian economy. Some of the forces used in the offensive against the Kapaluans start to approach the targetted Arachnid systems, with offensives expected next month.
To help the Octupii against the continuing Andromedan offensives, the Rigellians transfer across technical information of the gunboat, and gunboat racks. As the Rigellians are already working on developing the next generation gunboat, they have sacrificed little to aid the Octupii.
The Arachnids launch a spoiling attack from Harrikida - threatening the one Rigellian population in the former Arachnid space - Tanega. And finally, the Rigellians announce their new offensive against the Trajans in the usual way - by a surprise attack.
Kurt is a prolific writer (I have over 2 Meg of text files from his two campaigns) as well as a sufferer of bad luck. Kurt started a campaign using Starfire Assistant about the same time as Steve Walmsley did. This was the Terran Campaign. After 116 turns, the database crashed, leaving Kurt with an unfinished story (and let me tell you, these were interesting times.....) And so Kurt decided to start again.
Using some of the races from the Terran Campaign, Kurt started the Phoenix Campaign. Currently Kurt is around Turn 98, and let me tell you, things are just as interesting now, as it ever was with the Terran Campaign......
mail to: Kurt Blackwelder.
In fact, Kurt is such a prolific writer that I have been forced to move some of his older stories to another page. You can view it here.
The Phoenix Campign Guide (Ver 2.1), Kurt's latest version (Version 2.1) of the Phoenix Campign Guide. A very worthwhile read, as it lists all of the known races, their society, armed forces and ship designs. VERY informative.
