Brazil´s popular sport "futebol", pronounced foo-tchee-ball, soccer, is played in Rio de Janeiro Maracana Stadium, largest in the world, built for the 1950 World Championship. It exceeds its comfortable capacity of 180.000 for major games.
Competition between spectators can be just as fascinating for visitors; avid fans boost the morale of their favorite team by waving huge flags, striking drums or playing other musical instruments, shooting fireworks and giving thunderous applause or moans as the occasion solicits.

Most games are held Saturdays at 9.00 PM and Sundays at 5.00 PM. Be prepared to walk a lot , as it is 0.6 of a mile around the stadium, and i f you happen to be in the uppermost seat you are 125 yards from the players . However, you will have an excellent view ; there are no obstructing pillars.
Adjoining this big arena, is a smaller , enclosed and roofed stadium called Maracanazinho. The two are located near Quinta da Boa Vista in the northern Sao Cristovao district in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
