Larger Black Flour beetles in gin trash

The larger black flour beetle, Cynaeus angustus, has been known to infest gin trash piles since the 1970’s. The beetle causes severe nuisance to adjacent homes, nursing homes, businesses, and litigation has resulted against owners of gin trash piles in the Lubbock area and elsewhere. The main purpose of this project is to develop a cost-effective, reliable and long lasting rescue treatment plan for gin trash piles. In order to develop such a treatment plan, it is important to: 1) Determine the lethal dosage of spinosad for the beetles, 2) Evaluate whether dosages of spinosad applied to gin trash are repellent to the
beetles, and 3) Determine the efficacy of spinosad treatments
of experimental gin trash piles.
Experiments are conducted: 1) under controlled to investigate the importance of gin trash quality and soil conditions for the completion of the beetles' life cycle, 2) in large trash cans insdie a greenhouse to estimate lethal dosage of spinosad, 3) in experimental piles in the filed in which we monitor beetle population dynamics and will assess effects of large scale treatments.
