Precision-monitoring in stored peanuts

In collaboration with the main peanut shellers in the Southern High Plains, we are evaluating different monitoring procedures to determine: 1) their ability to detect low population densities, and 2) to what extent they can be used to pinpoint "hot spots" of high moth population densities.
The overall goal is to develop a user-friendly moth monitoring system, so that managers of stored peanuts can acquire reliable and cost-effective information about emerging moth infestations. By having this information available, we are collaborating with leading insecticide manufacturers on how to use precision-targeted treatments as an alternative to either broad-cast fogging or fumigation.
Chris is setting up a new round of weekly samples of peanuts to be stored for 5 weeks before determining level of moth infestation.
