With the success of JAWS, a sequel was inevitable. JAWS had 3 sequels. None were as good as the original, but they all had their moments....
When they set out to film the sequel to JAWS, they wanted Steven Spielberg to direct again, but he declined stating he had already made what he considered the ultimate shark film. French Director Jeannot Szwarc took over, and soon found he would have to make a new shark...the old one was rotting away on a Universal back lot. The new shark was made, and some key members of the original cast returned, including Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary. JAWS 2 was out in 1978, and is definitely worth watching.
4 years after the original shark problem, the town of Amity is up to their severed limbs in shark troubles again. Brody recognizes the problems as yet another shark. He theorizes that when he killed the first one, it perhaps somehow signaled or sent a distress call to another shark. Mayor Larry Vaughn wants to hear nothing of it: Amity is barely recovering its tourism after the last attack. When Brody gets over-zealous and fires bullets on a crowded beach at a school of blue-fish he thinks is the shark, the mayor fires him. Brody is proven right, and has to go out in search of yet another shark...which is terrorizing a group of sailing teens, including his own children.
JAWS 2 wasn't as thrilling as the original, but it was still a fun ride with enough great shark scenes to make it all worthwhile. The scene in which a woman tries to fight the shark off and ends up blowing her boat and herself up is one of my favorite highlights.
JAWS 3 was originally intended to be a spoof - the title was going to be JAWS 3, PEOPLE 0. Eventually it was decided to make it another "straight" shark attack movie. JAWS 3 was filmed in 3-D and came out in 1983.
The film centers around Chief Brody's kids - Michael and Sean. They work at Sea World, and are preparing to open an underwater glass tunnel attraction - the Undersea Kingdom. In the meantime, a diver at Sea World is attacked and killed by a shark. A baby Great White is found, and Michael and his girlfriend Kathryn put it on display. At first it is assumed this was the shark that attacked the diver, but when the diver is found with bite marks much larger than the radius of the shark's mouth, that idea is proven wrong. The baby shark dies in captivity, and momma comes looking for it, much to the dismay of any humans that get in her way. The shark attacks Sea World and the Undersea Kingdom, and it becomes a race to stop it.
JAWS 3 had its moments, but was somewhat of a lackluster entry to theJAWS world. It's funny to watch it without the 3-D effect - seeing things pointing at the camera that SHOULD look like they're coming towards you, but don't. It's noteworthy to mention that Dennis Quaid takes on the part of Michael Brody for this movie.
JAWS - The Revenge. This time, it was personal. 1987 brought us the final chapter in the JAWS saga. Lorraine Gary is back as Ellen Brody for the 4th film.
Ellen Brody is a widow in Amity, when her son, Sean is attacked and killed by yet another shark. Afterwards Ellen heads to the Bahamas to get away and to spend Chirstmas with Michael and his family. Michael is working on becoming a marine biologist, and spends a lot of time in the tropical waters. Ellen meets a pilot named Hoagie (yes, Hoagie) and the two become romantically involved. Michael's boat and partner, Jake, are attacked by a great white. Michael doesn't tell his mother, and the partners try to track and study the shark. When Michael's daughter, Thea witnesses a woman get attacked and killed by a shark, Ellen finds out what has been going on. She becomes the shark is out to get her family, and the only way to stop it is to fight the shark herself. Ellen takes Michael's boat, and is joined by Hoagie, Michael and Jake in a final showdown with the shark.
This definitely wasn't my favorite. It has a couple of good scenes in it, but also the most fake looking shark scenes...especially at the end when the shark is somehow impaled on the boat. Michael Caine play Hoagie in the film..perhaps not one of his primary career highlights.
