Broke youth shelter forced to close
WebPosted Mar 26 2004 07:52 AM EST
MIRAMICHI — A shelter for homeless teens in Miramichi is being forced to close
because of a lack of money.
The Miramichi Youth House opened a year and a half ago with the help of federal
funding. Since then, about 100 troubled young people have walked through the
doors.
That funding has now run out, and the house is slated to close on April 4.
The shelter has helped young people like Dana Mazerolle, 19, who recently
celebrated one year of sobriety. She says the Miramichi House helped turn her
life around. "What I was missing all my life is what they were giving me here. I
have everything I never had. I went from someone who was lost in her own little
world to someone who was open to the whole world," she says.
Mazerolle celebrated her milestone the same day shelter workers told her she'd
have to find a new place to live.
Shelter director Stacey Lee broke the news to the 11 youths who live in
Miramichi Youth House. "I hope I never, ever in my career have to sit down and
tell young people they have no home. It was probably one of the hardest things
I've ever had to do in my entire life."
While she hates the thought of leaving the house, Mazerolle is one of the lucky
ones. She has a friend who will take her in.
Stacey Lee is looking for homes for other youths living in the shelter, and is
pleading with the community and government for support to keep the youth house
open.
