Worship
The Avalon Unitarian Fellowship is lay-led,
and encourages the involvement of members and friends in all aspects of
its congregational life, from leading Sunday services and sharing musical
skills to making coffee and providing member care. Our community invites
diversity, and welcomes all who want to engage in spiritual exploration
and growth.
Our worship program, called Many Ways to Sundays and
facilitated by our members making use of a wide variety of resources,
reflects our diversity and participatory values. Every Sunday can be a
different experience. One week we might hear a sermon drawn from the
broader Canadian Unitarian community, and another week we might express
our spirituality through a creative writing exercise. Some services are
structured around a period of sharing from our personal spiritual journeys
in small-group conversations. Other services in the recent past have
engaged participants in storytelling or pondering poetry.
At selected times throughout the year, we offer an Intergenerational
service, built around the telling of a carefully chosen story to engage
all ages in celebration and reflection. We tell the story together as a
Reader’s Theatre, with the script and some props being provided on the
morning itself. These well-attended events are playful and relaxed
celebrations, with no rehearsals being called, lots of openings for
contributions of musical and dramatic talent, and even the readers don’t
know in advance how the full story will unfold!
