| Chapter 4 - You're Hurt Right Down To The Core. The room was warm, but Zac felt cold. He was shaking profusely, and his head ached. The beeping noise told him he was back in the hospital. He opened his eyes and tried to turn his head, almost screaming at the throbbing pain. "Zac? It's Mom." A hand reached out and patted his shoulder. "It hurts…" Zac moaned. "I know, baby. But it'll get better, I promise," Diana cooed, reaching over and hugging her son. Zac recoiled instinctively, then relaxed in his mothers arms, and began to cry. "What's wrong, Zac, did I hurt you?" she asked, worriedly laying her hand on his leg. Zac looked down to her hand and began to cry harder. "What? Sweetie, tell me! Please, I can't… tell me, please!" "I… I can't feel that. I can't feel your hand on my leg, momma, I hate being like this!" "Oh Zac!" Diana cried, gently wiping his tears away. She pulled away from him and saw that he'd cried himself to sleep. * * * "Taylor, if you don't stop pacing, I'm gonna punch you!" Isaac exclaimed, watching his brother walk in front of him for the hundredth time. "I'm sorry, I'm just anxious. When are they going to let us see him?" Taylor replied. Isaac rested his chin on his hand for support. "I don't know… and I don't know why you're so eager to see him… especially after what happened tonight." "I just want to see him. I'd be so lonely if I were him, so ready to just climb the walls." He really was afraid and worried, Isaac realised. The thought made him feel selfish, because he'd just been thinking about how much of an adjustment it had been on the rest of his family. "I wasn't so eager before, I know… it's just that I love him and I miss him, and I don't want our last moments together to be in anger." Taylor looked at Isaac and smiled sadly. "We're all he has right now… and I know that in the back of his mind he wants everything to be like it was… maybe he thinks he's broken or something, but he's not. We gotta help him see beyond that, you know?" Isaac felt a small smile climbing onto his lips. "Well said, Tay." Taylor's face flushed slightly as the door opened and Walker stepped into the room. "Zac's really sick guys, and he's going to have to stay here for awhile. But before you can see him, your mother and I have to talk to you all." * * * Taylor threw himself down on his bed. It had been a long day, and after seeing Zac, he wasn't sure how to handle everything the doctors and their parents had said. He sat up again after a moment and reached over for his notepad and pen off his desk and began to scribble down some lyrics. For the first time, it's a breakdown… |
