Baldwin talking to Penguins
Saturday May 15, 2004

"Stephen" pointed us to an article in today's
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which talks about how former NHL owner Harold Baldwin has been inquiring into the status of the Penguins with an eye on possibly moving them to Hartford, though current Pen's ownership is denying this.

We've have had occasional inquiries over recent months, with the question, 'Is the team for sale?' " said Tom McMillan, the Penguins' vice president of communications. "The answer is, 'No.' All our efforts are focused on keeping the team in Pittsburgh, for the long term."

It's safe to assume that is not the primary objective of most people who show interest in purchasing the team, including one who played a major role in the blurry future the franchise is facing.

That would be Howard Baldwin, the former owner who charted the fiscal course that steered the Penguins into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1998.

The Hartford Courant reported that Baldwin has engaged in what it called "preliminary exploration into getting reinvolved with the Pittsburgh Penguins and moving them to Hartford."

Penguins officials would not confirm even casual contact with Baldwin -- who most assuredly will not be invited to join the current ownership group -- but acknowledged the possibility that he has spoken to a third party outside the organization.

Baldwin also is believed to have occasional telephone conversations with Mario Lemieux, the team's primary owner.
