No Hockey in Kansas City Anytime Soon?
Wednesday July 9, 2003

   An article in today's
Kansas City Star talks about how any form of pro hockey left Kansas City 2 years ago, and it most likely wont be back anytime soon without a new arena in the city or interested ownership. Despite the fact that almost 13,000 tickets have been sold to the NHL Exhibition game at Kemper Arena on September 27th.

The article goes on to quote Paul McGannon, a member of NHL21, a group seeking to bring NHL hockey to Kansas City. "The idea is to have an annual NHL preseason game at Kemper, hope it's successful, until we secure a relocated (NHL) team. Who knows how long that's going to take? It'll probably take a new arena here," said McGannon.

McGannon said the preseason game Sept. 27 between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks will send a message to the NHL that Kansas City is serious about its hockey. McGannon said he met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at the All-Star Game and NHL draft about Kansas City's continued interest in the NHL.

"He's ramped up to speed," McGannon said. "I think people in the league office are curious about Kansas City."
