| REVISIONISM: A CRIME! ( originally written for Force Of Words Magazine Issue 3 - August 1998 ) I hope that no-one forgot what has happened almost 60 years ago. The Holocaust (or "Shoah") was probably the most horrible aspect of the second World War: six millions of Jews were murdered by the Nazi's, in several concentration and extermination camps. No-one should ever forget this terrible crime! However, since some considerable time many right-wing extremists defend the mendacious thesis that the Holocaust has never existed. These people are the so-called "revisionists" or "negationists". They admit that the Nazi-regime indeed pursued a discriminating policy towards Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and communists, BUT tey keep putting forward the wrong theory that the Holocaust is just a myth. They still want to make you believe that most German Jews fled to the Soviet Union and that the gas-chambers actually were disinfection rooms! The absolute figurehead of this dubious movement is the French history forger Robert Faurisson. His books are quite popular in extreme right-wing surroundings. Also in Belgium revisionists/negationists are active. For example, there is a grouping called "VZW Vrij Historisch Onderzoek" (=Free Historical Research), based in Antwerp. They deny that it was Hitler's intention to exterminate the Jewish people ("Endlösung"), deny that millions of Jews were murdered by the Nazi's and they deny that there were gas chambers and cremation ovens to execute that extermination order! (The ovens were - according to those revisionists - just to burn the 'normal' number of corpses; the gas chambers were only disinfection rooms). At the same time this grouping accuses witnesses and researchers of the Holocaust of spreading lies(!), just to bring nationalists and the German people into discredit! They claim that the Holocaust is an intentionally constructed myth (the so-called "Auswitz-Lüge") which is made use of to arouse sympathy for Zionism and for Israel and to stir up the aversion to the Germans. Another notorious negationist is this French guy called Maurice Bardèche, who wrote quite a few books and articles. The following statement (taken out of his books) is a very good example of his strange ideas: This book was translated into Dutch by Karel Dillen, the chairman of Flanders' extreme right-wing party, the "Vlaams Blok". Why is that no surprise to me?! I'll explain you why: most nationalists and fascists adhere to revisionism, because they would like to obtain rehabilitation of the Nazism. After all, many of the ideas and bills of the "Vlaams Blok" (and most other nationalist parties/movements) are astonishing similar to the Nazism!!! In fact the big problem is the immoral, malevolent intention of those who deny the Holocaust: on the one hand revisionists hurt the feelings of all Jewish people who were deeply traumatized by the loss and the suffering of their relatives and friends, on the other hand they want to polish the image of the Nazi-regime. They want to change the historical memory, in order to legitimize the Nazi-minded (fascist) movements/parties of today!!! In other words: revisionists/negationists are trying to become National-Socialism acceptable, by denying Hitler's crimes!!! It's as simple as that. It is very alarming that the spreading of revisionist theories can mislead a lot of credulous people. After all, what does the common man know about historical research? So please do't be blind. Don't believe a word of that negationist crap; if you have ever visited a concentration camp in you life, you know what to think about those lies. I have already visited camps like Dachau and Breendonk and I will never forget these unpleasant experiences. But the Holocaust HAS happened (nobody can change that!) and we all have to be aware of the atrocities that people are capable of. Therefore society has the moral duty to keep the memory alive and to punish those who are involved in revisionist/negationist propaganda. (written by Danny) |
