Education

Education is an area that concerns the parents. It revolves around the knowledge that parents must be aware of in order to prevent obesity. The factor that influences childhood obesity in terms of education is knowledge deficit.

Knowledge Deficit

Some parents are not aware of their children being obese. These parents are not able to identify that their children are overweight to health care professionals. There are perceptions that if a child looks fat the child is healthy (Baughcum, Chamberlin, Deeks, Powers, & Whitaker, 2000; Ebbeling, Pawlak, & Ludwig, 2002).

Another knowledge deficit that parents have is that they cannot read the appetite cues of their children. The parents will often misinterpret a child’s appetite when they give children a set sized portion, like a plate-sized meal, when children complain of hunger. The part that the parents miss is that the children may only need a snack instead of a full meal (Ebbeling, Pawlak, & Ludwig, 2002).
