The History and Everyday Life of the Amish

The Amish, under the leadership of Jakob Amman, broke away from members of the Mennonite community between 1693-1697. The majority of the Amish people moved from Europe to America, mostly Pennsylvania in 1727. They were a part of William Penn’s “Holy Experiment.” Since then, the Amish have been living a simple lifestyle set forth by their religion. The Amish are split among the Old Order and the New Order. The Old Order is organized congregationally. A congregation includes all family members that live in the immediate geographic area. The New Order Amish have two church districts and are more progressive.
Present day Amish are spread between Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. They live in small communities where they farm to make a living. Men usually do the heavy farming while women prepare meals, make quilts, and can food.
