The Amish



All across America there are small communities of people who live a simple, religious life without the modern day conveniences. These people are known as the “Plain People” or the Amish. Since the early 1700s the Amish having been living a simple lifestyle in America. There are approximately 150,000 Amish dotted across North America. The majority of them live in Ohio; others live in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Iowa. Amish people make farming their way of life. Their farms can be spotted across rural communities because they do not have electricity connected to their houses and most have a large windmill in their yard. Along with the history behind the Amish, this website will explore their religion, everyday life, their clothes, and teaching materials that can be used to help children learn about them.
