Amish Children


Amish children are treated with the deepest respect and are very loved by their parents. On average most Amish families consist of seven children. Amish parents take their duties as parents very seriously. They believe in the importance of direct and constant involvement in the children's lives.
Until they start school at age six, most Amish children do not speak English but rather German (German is considered a religious symbol). When at school age, most Amish children go to parochial schools, but some do attend public schools. Schooling for Amish children ends at the eighth grade. Amish children do normal kid activities. They play games like pretending "house," "store," or "farm." They also can be seen playing baseball with friends, brothers, and sisters out in a field. most Amish children have chore-time twice a day where they help their parents with the farm animals and other beneficial jobs.
