The Northford Women's Club,
a member of the GFWC, is an all-volunteer, nonprofit club consisting fiery
and determined women who are outspoken, vivacious, and politically and socially
active. This is a very lively, fun-loving, and friendly group of career
and family women and spry elderly activists who love to socialize, but also
are serious in their desire to improve the community in which they live
and to make a visible difference.
The activities chosen by the Northford Women's Club are geared toward improving life in Northford and the surrounding areas in a variety of ways. In the past year, the club sponsored community activities including donations of blankets and dolls to Operation Smile, a world-wide organization that provides medical attention and operations for children with facial deformities, The Midnight Run, a volunteer program to feed the hungry in New Haven, The Northford Animal Shelter, Food Baskets for Needy Families, The Annual Student Art Contest, High School Seniors Student Service Award Scholarships, and Club Scholarships for members' college bound graduating high school seniors. Fundraising activities for charity include the Yankee Candle, a shopping Bus Trip to New York, and the Annual Charity Raffle. Guest speakers in the past have included area business people such as Linda and Joe DeFrancesco of the DeFrancesco Farm in Northford, and Dr. Lisa Sanders, an Emmy award-winning producer for CBS News, a popular newspaper columnist for the New York Times, and an intern faculty member at the Yale University School of Medicine. The popular Annual Christmas Dinner and Auction
is always a festive and lively holiday event. Gift baskets, crafts, and
food baskets, many of which are handmade and donated by members and area
merchants, are piled high on tables. Sotheby's is no match for this most
revered occasion as members and guests engage in friendly and vivacious
bidding. |
