BRAKISS

Brakiss, a former student at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, was fairly gifted with the Force. Brakiss was stolen from his family by the Imperial forces that occupied his homeworld, recognizing his potential for using the Force. He was reonditioned, and was later employed as a spy, sent to determine the extend of the threat posed by the renewal of the Jedi Knights under Luke Sywalker. When Luke sent Brakiss on an illusionary quest, Brakiss could not reconcile the Light and Dark Sides of the Force, represented by Luke's Academy and the Empire. He fled Yavin 4, and went into hiding until he was discovered by Dolph, another of the failed students of Skywalker's praxeum. Dolph had renamed himself Kuellar, and was developing his own scheme to take control of the galaxy. He set up Brakiss on Telti, overseeing an automated droid construction facility. Brakiss' droids were implanted with detonators that could be set off via a remote control help by Dolph/Kuellar. He later set up the Shadow Academy in the Core Systems. He did so out of his deep belief that the Jedi were needed to help preserve the order of the Empire, not the Republic. Brakiss looked forward to the day when the so-called Second Imperium would overthrow the New Republic, and when his Imperial Jedi were able to defeat Luke Skywalker's Jedi. When a reborn Emperor Palpatine began controlling the Second Imperium, Brakiss gladly bowed to his true master's rule. However, the Emperor's solitary nature and lack of respect for Brakiss' accomplishments disillusioned him. He became frustrated with the Emperor when he arrived at the Shadow Academy, shortly before the attack on Kashyyyk. After the deaths of Vonnda Ra and Garowyn in the Kashyyyk jungles, Brakiss declared the mission a success because of the computer components they had stolen. He felt that the loss of the two Nightsisters was an accepted loss. In the wake of the raid on Kashyyyk, the Shadow Academy began gearing up for an attack on Yavin 4. Spurred on by Palpatine's commands, Brakiss and Tamith Kai invaded the Jedi Academy's defenses and nearly defeated Luke's students. However, several setbacks suffered by Tamith Kai and Brakiss' Dark Jedi turned the battle in favor of the Jedi, and Brakiss appealed to Palaptine for direction. He discovered, though, that there was no Palpatine. The appearance of the Emperor was being perpetrated by four former Imperial Royal Guards. The Dark Side of the Force flooded Brakiss, and he quickly dispatched three of the four guards. The fourth escaped the Shadow Academy, but not before setting off the station's self-destruct systems. Brakiss was unable to escape from the doomed station, and died in the explosion.

ZEKK

This young native of Ennth fled the planet following a natural disaster that devastated his colony. He escaped in a supply ship fleeing the planet, on which the captain tried to get him into an orphanage. Zekk fled this ship, and a few others, before he ended up on Peckhum's ship. Peckhum had taken Zekk in and cared for him, seeing Zekk's natural  independence as a mirror of his own youth. The two finally stopped on  Coruscant. There, he found refuge in the cityworld's subterranean environs.  Later, he was befriended by Jaina and Jacen Solo. He is a wiry youth with  black hair and striking green eyes. It was Tamith Kai, scouring the  underground levels of Coruscant, who discovered that Zekk had a large amount of Force sensitivity. He was brought to the Shadow Academy for training, and was taken under Brakiss's wing. Zekk's power grew swiftly, and so did the rivaly between he and Vilas, Tamith Kai's apprentice. The two were pitted against each other in a battle to the death for the position of Darkest Knight. Both Tamith Kai and Brakiss believed that the rivalry between the two would divide the Academy. In the battle, Zekk managed to dispatch Vilas. This victory made Zekk the Darkest Knight of the Shadow Academy, a positioon bestowed upon him by Brakiss, much to Tamith Kai's dismay. As the Darkest Knight, Zekk was given command of the assault team sent to Kashyyyk to steal starship components for the Second Imperium's own ships. They infiltrated the planet holo-disguised as Wookiees, and successfully obtained a large amount of starship shielding and navigational equipment.

TAMITH KAI

The first of a new group of Nightsisters, Tamith Kai kidnapped Jaina and Jacen Solo, along with Lowbacca, from GemDiver station. Tamith is distinguished by her jet black hair, pale skin, deep violet eyes, and remarkable beauty. She wore jet-black armor which was adorned with functional spikes. She employed Qorl as her personal pilot after joining Brakiss on the Shadow Academy. She struggled against Brakiss' leadership, and was bitter that Zekk defeated her own champion, Vilas. When the Shadow Academy attacked Yavin 4, Tamith Kai led the initial ground assault with Zekk. They split up the Jedi students and tried to kill them separately, but were unable to do so. When Tenel Ka clipped a TIE Fighter with her lightsaber, the craft spun out of control and struck the landing platform on which Tamith Kai stood. She was instantly killed in the resulting explosion.

GAROWYN

One of the Nightsisters accompanying Vonnda Ra when she seduced Dathomirian witches to join the Shadow Academy. She was a powerfully-built, petite woman with long, brown hair. She earned the rank of Captain among Brakiss' Second Imperium troops. She took control of Luke Skywalker and Tenel Ka, and transported them to the Shadow Academy. Luke feigned limited knowledge of the Force to lull her into a false sense of security, then used the Force to physically fling her into an escape pod on the Shadow Chaser and set her adrift in space. She returned to the Shadow Academy, and later helped Tamith Kai kidnap Zekk. When Brakiss launched his attack on the factories of Kashyyyk, Garowyn submitted to Zekk's leadership in order to gain an opportunity to recover the Shadow Chaser. She nearly succeeded, but was thwarted when she discovered the ship had been damaged in an ion storm. In a struggle with Chewbacca and Jaina Solo, Garowyn lost her footing in a tall wroshyr tree and plummeted to her death.

VONNDA RA

A Nightsister who was trained in the use of the Dark Side of the Force away from Dathomir, she returned to recruit Light Side witches to join her at the Shadow Academy for training. She had set up camp in the Great Canyon when Luke Skywalker and Tenel Ka returned to Dathomir. She failed to bring Tenel Ka into the Academy's ranks, and returned to the station after recruiting many other Singing Mountain Clan sisters. Later, during the attack on Kashyyyk, she assisted Zekk in stealing large amounts of starship components before attacking Jacen Solo, Tenel Ka, Lowbacca, and Sirrakuk. In a struggle with Sirra, the two fell into a syren plant. The other three youths managed to rescue Sirra, but Vonnda Ra was caught and eaten by the syren.

VILAS

Vonnda Ra's male companion on Dathomir. He was somewhat gifted in the use of the Force, and could manipulate the weather. He later went with Tamith Kai to search out potential trainees for the Shadow Academy, and helped her kidnap Zekk. During his apprenticeship to Tamith Kai, he grew stronger and stronger in the use of the Dark Side of the Force, and became one of the leaders of the Shadow Academy. When Zekk became a powerful student under Brakiss, the two were placed in a unique, zero-gravity combat chamber to duel each other to the death. The winner would become the Shadow Academy's military leader. Although Vilas held the upper hand throughout most of the duel, Zekk prevailed and killed Vilas.

QORL

An Imperial TIE Fighter pilot who fought in the Battle of Yavin, Qorl was caught in X-Wing defensive fire and forced to crash-land on Yavin 4. Badly injured, he managed to survive there for over twenty years, until he was discovered by Jacen Solo. Qorl held the Solo twins hostage until they repaired his ship, which he took. Employing the hyperdrive installed by Jaina Solo, Qorl left the Yavin System. Qorl then joined the Second Imperium and served as a pilot and trainer aboard the Shadow Academy. His damaged body was repaired with cybernetic implants, including his entire left arm. He successfully captured the Adamant and obtained valuable hyperdrive cores, turbolasers, and shield codes for the Imperium's fleet. In the climactic battle between the Shadow Academy and the Jedi on Yavin 4, Qorl was again shot down by the New Republic fleet. He was presumed dead, but decided that he'd had enough of galactic conflicts and remained a hermit in the jungles of Yavin 4.

NORYS

This burly adolescent was the leader of the Lost Ones, and underworld teenaged gang on Coruscant. Norys looked the part of a bully, with close-set eyes and crooked teeth that split his sneer into a cruel grin. He went out of his way to make life hard for Zekk. When agents from the Shadow Academy went to Coruscant to search out Force-sensitives for training, they also took the members of the Lost Ones for stormtrooper training. Norys welcomed the chance to prove himself as a stormtrooper, and trained at every opportunity. His marksmanship grew quickly, but he lacked the discipline essential to a stormtrooper. He did become one of the Shadow Academy's troopers, much to the chagrin of Qorl, who trained him. Qorl despised Norys for his lack of respect for his superiors, and their differences flared up during the Shadow Academy's attack on Yavin 4. Norys had, by then, learned to fly a TIE Fighter, and went off on his own to take out the Lightning Rod. Qorl took the opportunity to verbally reprimand Norys and, when the young man failed to listen, Qorl shot his TIE Fighter out of the sky.
