Skill Use in BESM

Although the BESM/Tri-Stat skill system is expiained in nearly every product in GOO's anime game lines, some players and GMs may still find the system a little counter-intuitive. This is especially the case if they are used to other game systems where things are sometimes treated exactly the opposite as the way they are in the BESM/Tri-Stat skill system.

Always keep this in mind: Stat checks and Skill Checks need to be LOWER than the attribute being rolled against to be successful. In BESM, the lower the number rolled, the better the result. Skill levels are SUBTRACTED from the die rolls, while situational modiers are ADDED.

For example...

Natsumi has 3 levels in Driving (Motorcycle) and she is on a Ducati, weaving in and out of traffic in pursuit of a bad guy who is on his own motorcycle. The GM rules that this is an Average Difficulty task.

Natsumi's player needs to roll a skill check against her Body Stat, which is 6. The roll is on 2d6 is a 9. The player then subtracts -4 from the roll (Natsumi is on a motorbike and that's what her Driving specialization is oriented toward), which becomes a 5. This is less than or equal to Natsumi's body stat, so the skill roll is a successful one (because the result is below her Body stat) and she avoids crashing.

The fleeing bad guy turns into a pedestrian mall, still driving at top speed. Natsumi pursues into a far more tricky environment. The GM decides that another skill check is required, but with the shocked or panicked pedestrians have turned it into a Difficult situation; Natsumi now faces a +2 penalty.

The player rolls another 10. The -4 is subtracted, but the +2 Difficulty adjustment is added, leaving a total result of 8. This is above Natsumi's Body stat, so she has failed the skill check. The GM says that a child emerges from behind a balloon vendors cart and when Natsumi serves to avoid the tyke, she loses control of her bike and crashes.

The failure was not a catastrophic one, however, so Natsumi is uninjured. She is flung over the handlebars of the Ducati and lands on a convenient pile of futon matresses outside one of the shops after being thrown off the bike. But the Ducati is going to need a new set of handlebars and maybe even new front suspension.

Abandoning the bike, she continues the pursuit on foot! Maybe Miyuki has gotten clear of the traffic jam a block away and will be able to head the villain off...
