Name of Drill: Cross & Go
Category: Offense - Shooting
Skills Practiced: Crossover pivot, Lay-ups
Players Required: 8 or More

Description: This drill teaches shooters to crossover pivot and aggressively drive to the basket. For younger players, use this drill after they are familiar with pivoting to face the basket in a pass-shoot-dribble triple threat position. More skilled players can benefit from this drill by adding the crossover pivot to their inside pivot, outside pivot and drop step repertoire or in combination with an up-fake.

Instructions: Set up a standard lay-up line with a cone on the right elbow. The drill begins with the first rebounder passing to the shooter who is facing the basket one step beyond the cone. The shooter should catch the pass and step to his right with his left foot past the cone. He should stay low and close to the cone while beginning the dribble with his right hand. The shooter should not take more than two dribbles before laying the ball of the backboard. Younger players may need to take an extra dribble to complete the lay-up. Shooters should repeat the move crossing left with their right foot and dribbling with their left hand for a strong finish in the paint. Complete the drill by reversing to the left side of the court and by having the shooters finish with both left handed and right handed lay-ups.

Tips: Watch for traveling violations. Young players will often drag or change their pivot foot before making their move or beginning to dribble. Have the shooters go from triple threat to lay-up without hesitation. Watch for crossovers close to the cone, that would seal the defensive player, but are not so close that the shooter might pick up a player control foul. Remind shooters 1) to look for the pass and high percentage shot before making the move 2) a defender that jumps out too aggressively gives up the lane 3) a defender that reacts slowly gives up a mid-range jump shot.

Variations: Allow one dribble and have shooters pull up for a jump shot. Add an up-fake. Add a defensive player, but remember, this is an offensive drill. Give the shooter 5 seconds to get off a "good" shot under heavy defensive pressure.
