Kyokushin in NZ

Within New Zealand and indeed around the world there are many organizations and clubs claiming to be official Kyokushin Karate bodies.

The Napier and Hastings Karate clubs are members of the International Karate Organization Kyokushinkaikan (IKO) headed by Kancho Shokei Matsui, the rightful successor or Sosai Mas Oyama (founder of Kyokushin).

The IKO is a 12 million member international organization operating in 126 countries and territories (http://www.ikohonbu.com/).

The New Zealand branch of the IKO has two official Branch Chiefs: Shihan Bob McCallum QSM 6th Dan (based in Wellington) and Sensei Steve Takiwa 4th Dan based in Auckland.

Any organization claiming to be Kyokushin but not operating as a member of Shihan McCallum or Sensei Takiwa are not recognized Kyokushin dojo of the IKO.

We recommend you check whether your local New Zealand club is a member of either branches before you sign up.
