Well this has been a beautiful day and after expecting a heavy snow that was predicted by the weather man, it seems finer than ever. I was so anxious about it that I got up in the night to see if the snow had come. I want Jan. to keep up its record to the end for fine weather, and only one more fine day and it will make the finest winter month I ever knew. Anna was out calling on the neighbors this P.M. Min. Hopkin called with Howard and I was surprised to see such a cute little baby, 6 months old. Friday January 31 20°. Well the last day of Jan. has come and it is trying hard to snow and flakes are falling all day but do not make much show on the ground about an inch is all. I got a postal from Lydia White today saying her Mother died yesterday and the funeral would be tomorrow at 2 P.M. at the house. February 1902Saturday February 1 20°. Nothing unusual occurring today that I know of. Read this A.M. that the Biddle boys had been shot and captured and Mrs Whats her name had shot herself. Looks like heavy snow but it dont come. Took out a big load this morning but everything went fine. Anna got a letter from her Mother and Flo and they are feeling fine too. Anna is answering it now "noon". Got paid today and I paid my assesment dues, Postal News and $1.25 for mud guards I owed Berry. Sunday February 2 20°. About 6 in. of snow on the ground. Got up and cleaned off the walk. Went to church. Mr Chivera preached in evangelical style, did not like him to well, he was full of energy and etc. The sun shone a few times during the day. The bear could have seen his shadow but he would have to look quick the wind blew and the air was full of snow. Edna & Lydia was at church, and quite a crowd considering the day. Monday February 3 This morning turned cold and a high wind from the N. W. made it worse. Aunt Vina [Joy] came to stay this A.M. Came home to night on the car. Sutherland was on and he told me he was thinking of building, said he could afford it now as he was pulling $2000 a year now. I wonder what they raise his salary for as it dont seem to me he can earn it now he is a lucky man & makes me feel as though I was 36¢ and wanted a chance too. Anna & I took a walk after supper and paid the rent and bought some groceries, nearly froze, and came home. Talked with Geo. on the car today, it is his birthday. Said he might come over this eve. but I have not seen him. Tuesday February 4 10° in A.M. Well today has been a corker. The wind has blown from the N. W. a regular Jimmy Cane, blizzards and the whole thing. The thermometer is going down to night fast, since 2 oclock it has gone down 14 degrees. It is now at 0, 7 oclock. The paper did not come this Eve. and I am madder than blazes about it, I think I will have it stopped. Aunt Vina has just gone over to Hardenburgs for the Eve. Anna & I are alone and it is still as a mouse. It is going to be a wild night and I feel for anyone that has to be out in it. Wednesday February 5 4° below this morning. It is good and cold today but not as bad as yesterday. Rode my wheel to work but not to route. Anna got a letter from Flo. saying that Aunt Em. Clarkson was dead. [Emma Maria Clarkson 1848-1902, dau. of David and Sarah Ann Bradley Clarkson] We did not know she [was] sick but it seems she has been sick and we did not know it. Wonder what Grandma [Sarah Ann Bradley Clarkson] will do now, we dont know whether they will bring her home or not. Went in the Drug store to buy some Glys. & arris root and met Chas. Nickleson. He was expecting Inez to night. She had been sick down at Herberts and wanted to get home. Thursday February 6 10° above. It is not very cold today. Some snow fell last night and it has snowed all the A.M. a little. I do not feel just pert today. I think I have taken a little cold but not enough to know it hardly. Anna got a letter from Norine today but she did not say much, Mother was feeling better, house was cold, could not keep warm Etc., did not say anything about Aunt Em. Friday February 7 12°. Today has [been] a typical Feb. day I guess, I would not know what else to call it. One minute it would be sunshiny and nice, and the next it would be cold windy and snowy. We are expecting Geo & his wife this eve. But [it] is now 8 and I guess they wont come to night. I stopped on Woodward while waiting for a car to night and bought a couple pair of sox, .50, and some bone collar buttons. A man gave me 4 samples of snowflake oats today. Saturday February 8 This is a nice morning, clear and bright. As I was walking to work about 6:30, I thought it a beautiful morning with the snow and I noticed for the first time that it seemed so much lighter. A cold wind came up about 10 A.M. and then it did not seem so nice. Lydia Joy came here to dinner and staid to supper & Eve. Mother and Edna came soon after supper then Geo. & his Anna came with their new phonograph and said they must hurry and get it going to get through. I thought they seemed most to business like for the first time they had been over since we lived on Avery, but I was not sorry they did for it took till nearly 10 to get the records run through. We sent over for Sams folks, and they all came except Elmer. Belle staid part of the Eve. & then went home and Maggie came. We enjoyed it but it dont seem as though we had much of a visit. Aunt Vina & Lidia went home with Mother & Edna and we were left alone it seemed good to be so. Sunday February 9 This has been a nice clear [day]. I was taken a cold yesterday in my usual way. I took a Seidlitz powder last Eve. and one this morning and got rid of the bad taste in my mouth. It is my first cold this winter and I do not feel very scrum today, think I am better to night. Worked today and found a big dose of circulars and it makes me dread to go to work in the morning. Mabel came in the morning and she and Anna has put in a good day visiting and showing and talking about "things." Mabel took the 7 P.M. car home and Anna and I went to the car with her. The cold seemed to go right through me. I bought 15¢ worth of horehound candy. Aunt Vina has not come home yet from Mothers, I suppose she does not intend to come to night but she seems so apt to get lost that I cant help but worry a little. Monday February 10 This has been a most beautiful [day], cold but sunshiny. Aunt Vina came back all right so no use to worry about it. My cold seems better but it makes me feel rather uncomfortable. Anna does not feel so well today either but I guess we will feel better in the morning. A big sensation was caused today by the failure of Andrews and the closing of the City Saving Bank. I guess Andrews has been flying too high for him to light gracefully. I hope they will be able to pay all depositors for it would be too bad to have so many poor people lose all their savings. I think I will go to bed early to night to make up for lost time, it did not seem as though I slept a wink last night but I suppose of course I did. Tuesday February 11 Weather about the same. Had a good sleep and rest last night and feel better but suppose my cold will have to hang on a few days. Went over to Grand River at noon to buy some things but they did not have what I wanted so I went down town at night and bought a basket, tray, water bottle, cotton and a thermometer that I did not want. Came home tired to death almost. Wednesday February 12 Well this has been a regular March day, one minute nice and sunshiny, and the next a regular old blizzard. Aunt Vina went to a concert with Maggie & Belle, and Maggie played in it. Anna went down to Mothers in the P.M. and I came after work, and we staid to supper and walked home in the Eve. Thursday February 13 10° above. This has been a beautiful day, bright and pleasant but still not warm by any means. Nothing unusual occurred today. Got an order to put wreaths and numbers on our caps, and to attach our keys to our coat. Mr. Buggs, two doors above here, called on me. Could not think what could be the matter, he talked pleasantly for a few minutes then broached the subject of insurance but I am supplied. Friday February 14 20° above. It has seemed warm today, perfectly beautiful day. Today is Valentine day and I have delivered Valentines galore. Kids were anxiously waiting for me to come and some were so disappointed when I did not have one for them I felt sorry for them. After work I went over to the Dtr. Floral Co. and got Anna a Valentine of flowers and then took a cut through to Grand River on my wheel bought some butter then home. Saturday February 15 20°. This has been a fine day all but sunshine. But you can bet I am glad to see even as nice a day as this is added to the list because I did not expect so nice weather in Feb. Valentines were as bad today as yesterday, and I am glad the week has gone for I do feel most awfully tired tonight and my feet are in bad condition. I dont know whats the matter unless it is rubbers. Anna sits chonking apples guess I will have to join. Apples are 50¢ a peck now. Cant afford to eat many. Aunt Vina took the car down to Mothers and of course we will feel anxious till we hear she got there all right. Sunday February 16 20°. It seems warm today, sunshines part of the time. I have taken it very lazy today, done simply nothing but eat and rest, slept a couple of hours after dinner, got up and shaved, went to the car with Flo, and went to bed, a good day of rest. As we were eating breakfast a ring came and I got up wondering who it could be thinking it was a news boy, but there was Flo. And Anna and she started in for a days visiting at the rate of 40 miles an hour. About 1 oclock Flo. said "whos that coming, I do believe it is Aunt Cornelia, Oh dear." And sure enough ring went bell and there she was, she staid to dinner but went soon after while I was sleeping, and when I came down Inez Hart was here. Then Lydia came to see her Mother but went away down to Mothers to find her which she did not for her Mother was up to Geo. Inez did not stay long, Flo. went a piece with her and after supper Flo. took the car home. Monday February 17 30°. It is quite warm today. It looked like lots of snow all the forenoon but not much came, a little light snow fell but the afternoon sun melted it quickly and made it slushy. Aunt Vina came home all right last night. She had been up to Geos. with the folks, Pa & Ma. She has gone down to the church lecture to night with Delia & Hardenburgs. The couch & chair came today just as I was starting for work. I helped carry it up stairs then had to hurry to work. Came home from work & went to the store on cor. 12 bought meat, eggs, chocolate. Anna & I are here alone this Eve. Tuesday February 18 10°. This has been a kind of a Marchy day, regular blizzard in the P.M. Bought a chair seat & some tacks on my way from work at noon and after dinner I put in on the sewing rockers. It looks first rate, then I fixed the back of the upholstered rocker. Dont seem to be much going on now a days. They have got F. C. Andrews in jail and I guess they are going to keep him there and I guess he deserves it, though I am rather of the opinion that he is not the only man that has made money in that way. If we only knew how the rich got rich maybe we would not envy them as much as we do. Wednesday February 19 About zero. It was quite good and cold this morning and it staid cold but the sun came out so nice and worm that it made it seem a good deal warmer than it really was. But it was a beautiful day and I am agreeably surprised at Feb. so far and hope it will continue. I found Ted & Norine here when I came home from work at noon, had a good visit from Ted. They left for down town soon after I went to work. Anna is pasting pictures together with ribbon now. I guess just to amuse her self. I am not feeling very well to night. I think my cold has not left me yet. I wish it would go. Thursday February 20 20°. Well this has been a beautiful day. It seemed almost like spring and thawed considerable in the streets. At night I brought home 1 lb of English walnuts and some butter we had butter but could not eat it. Aunt Vina went with Maggie to hear an Elocutionist orate in the evening. Friday February 21 20°. This has been another spring day. I am so glad the weather holds so good it is getting so near spring that it seems as though we would not have any extreme cold now. This winter has seemed so free from storms or extreme weather of any kind that it seems remarkable. I washed the windows at noon. To night is the Masonic Minstrels and I would go but for the Carriers minstrels tomorrow afternoon and Eve. I suppose I will have to go to that any way and to night [would] be too many, Lydia just arrived on the scene. Saturday February 22 Hardly freezing. Well this is Washingtons birthday and I wonder if he was born on any such beautiful day as this has been. I declare I do not know what to think of it. It is just like spring only nicer, clear and {gralling?} sunshiny and warm. Having a 1/2 holiday I proceeded to work and fume on my bicycle tire untill I got mad and Anna said that is just the way you spend your holiday but I got it fixed OK, got my hair cut, shaved, Etc. Edna & Lydia & Maggie was here for supper. Ednas & Lydia went to the Det. Opera and Maggie & I went to the carriers Minstrel show. Had a good time but did think it was not much account. Got home by 10:30, sat and talked with Anna & ate apples and malted milk till about 12 then went to bed. Sunday February 23 30°. Another fine spring day. I worked today, the Home Journals were in and you can bet I had all I could do to get them up. Aunt Vina and Lydia went over to Sams to spend the day. Anna & I took dinner alone and was enjoying the afternoon together when Mother & Father came up to Sams and we went over. But Anna saw Inez & Anna Fry come to call so she came home and came soon after they staid to tea. We had a jolly good visit they went about 8. Inez borrowed my Opera glasses to take to Superba tomorrow night. I ought to answer Herbert's letter but I guess I wont to night. Monday February 24 30°. Today has been like spring, it looked this morning as though it had rained but I guess it was no more than a mist. Anna & Aunt Vina walked down to Mothers this P.M. it was so warm. I found 10¢ on the street this morning and a little further along I found 5-3¢ street car tickets, so goes Monday, so goes the rest of the week, if it does I will be quite rich. Mrs. Parks the nurse is here to call now. She has come from Grant Winlers, they have a 11# boy born the 28 Jan. Tuesday February 25 Another fine day. Aunt Vina [Joy] sick all day. Went down at noon and paid gas bill. Bought Table cloth at Taylor W. & Co. Went down to Mothers from work wanted to have a talk with Mother about her future well fare but Tina McKay was there sewing so could not talk about that. Came home in time for supper. Anna walked out to Grand River to drug store bought some Cuscarets for Aunt Vina. Wednesday February 26 Fine warm day. Aunt Vina not much better all day. Father came up this P.M. to inquire after Aunt Vina. He is not very well him self. Went down to H. B. Clarks this Eve. on the car to take a pair of Uniform Pants to be reseated and my new coat to have the collar lowered a little, said he would send them back Friday. Thursday February 27 30°. Warm and sunny this A.M. but this P.M. it acts as though it is brewing a storm. Aunt Vina a little better today. My cold still hangs on, I am hoarse and stuffed up. Friday February 28 Warm, rainy, windy. A regular April day, sunshines then rains and wind. Went down to Ringes after Molasses. Aunt Vina coming out all right. Father called. |

March 1902Saturday March 1 Cold, damp, misty, rainy, windy. I guess March came in a roaring all right with wind and rain but not very cold. Nothing going on at all, thought I would go down town in the evening but when I got home I felt tired so just ate my supper, read a little, slept in my chair a little, took a good old bath, ate a lunch of cookies and malted milk and went to bed and sweat all night. Sunday March 2 30°. A little colder today. A little sunshine but mostly cloudy. Got up about 8, ate breakfast, read, shaved, got dressed and went to church. Sermon was by an Italian minister. Edna came in late, she walked home with me, did not intend to stay to dinner but was finally persuaded to. Maggie called as we were eating but had had her dinner. Aunt Vina went home with Edna. Inez Hart called to return my Opera Glasses. Mrs. McLeod and Donald called about 5 P.M. Monday March 3 20°. Quite a bit colder today. Went down to see Dr. Bell after work but no satisfaction out of him. Stopped on my way home and bought some Licorice compound. Tuesday March 4 20°. Cold and a cold wind but not so bad for March. Big mails now a days. Wednesday March 5 25°. A little warmer than yesterday and more pleasant. Not much going on these days. The snow is all off of the ground, not much like the 1st of March last year. Mother up in P.M. Thursday March 6 25°. Beautiful day, lovely. Went down town to John McGees store and got a crock of Annas butter, 23¢ a #. Aunt Vina went to Church this Eve with Belle & Maggie who called for her. Prince Henry has reached Boston Mass. and they say he is getting tired of cheering crowds, how strange anybody would get tired of being honored. I really believe one might even get tired of living. Mother up P.M. Friday March 7 30°. One more beautiful day. Down to Mothers after work. Lydia came but went home with Edna who called in the evening. Mrs Parks called about dusk. Saturday March 8 Well this is different again, it was raining when I got up and it was nasty and misty all day, rode my wheel though. Lydia came to dinner and she went up to Besses afternoon. Aunt Vina walked down to Mothers after supper and Edna & Lydia walked home with her but did not stay. I covered the little box in the bathroom, took a good old bath and went to bed. Sunday March 9 40°. It seems gloomy today, it does not rain but pretty near it. We kind of expected some of the Northvillians in today but we were disappointed. I had Wilford work in my place today, thought some thing might happen today but I might as well worked my self, but no harm done I suppose. I have enjoyed the quiet day immensely. Aunt Vina done up the morning work and went down to Mothers so Anna and I have been all alone all day. Wrote to Herbert. Anna and I took a walk up to Merrick and back. Monday March 10 50°. Very warm. Cleaned wheel at night. Nothing going on. Aunt Vina over to Hardenburgs in Eve. Maggie over P.M. Tuesday March 11 50°. Very warm and rainy. Rained last night and rained this morning so I did not ride wheel to route but it soon cleared and did not rain again till about 5 but has since. Went down town in the rain on my wheel after some rubbers and fountain syringe, shaved after supper. Anna & I went up and sit in the front room in the dark and looked out into the wet and glistening night. And it made up feel rich to have so nice a room on so nice a street. Wednesday March 12 50°. Rained during the night. Rode my wheel to the route in the rain but it did not rain long. Got caught in a shower coming in P.M. I guess we are in a rainy season, well would rather it would rain than snow. Prince Henry has started for home. He has been whirled through the country like the wind and now he has started for home. I should think he would be tired completely out. Anna does not feel very well and I wonder whats the matter that things dont come to a focus. First thunder storm of the season today. Thursday March 13 50°. It seemed a little colder today, but not much. Looked very much like rain but it has not rained yet. I feel as though I caught more cold yesterday in the rain. And with what I already had makes me feel like the last rows of winter. The sun is shining beautifully just now at noon. Anna feels like the old harry I guess. Friday March 14 35°. Colder today but a most glorious day. Nothing that I can think of has happened today. Maggie heard that Eva has a new baby girl and that it was Fila Saffords or Harrisons husband that was killed at Ann Arbor the other day by the Electric Cars or rather Electricity. Eggs were 35¢ a doz. the other day, now they are 17¢ a doz. Saturday March 15 40°. Today has seemed more like a March day, cold and rainy & windy. I got up and got my breakfast without a light for the first time. It seems good to have it light. I do hate to go to work in the dark, it makes it seem as though I worked "always". Anna got a letter from Cora Manning today. Sunday March 16 40°. Got cold at night. Mabel came in about 9 oclock and staid all day and over night. Did not go to church though I knew I ought to. Aunt Vina went down to Mothers after breakfast. Monday March 17 20°. Well this is different again, 20° above with a jimmy cane wind seems pretty cold. Mabel thought there was no use to stay so went home. Belle over P.M. Got a letter from Herbert wanting Geo. and I to invest in his business. Went up to see Geo. in the Eve. but he could not decide. Listened to his phonograph for an hour, borrowed his Typewriter and came home. Tuesday March 18 14°. Still colder but no snow. Although it seems awful cold it is not stormy. Got a puncture fixed at noon at Berries. Wrote on Geo. Typewriter at night till I was tired out. Wednesday March 19 20°. Cold in the morning but the sun come out and made warm and pleasant. Yesterday or the day before I saw a number of robins up on 12th St. and it was so cold I wondered if they did not wish they were back where they came from. Thursday March 20 30°. Very pleasant day. Father came up after Aunt Vina and they went out to Chapmans and staid all day. Maggie was over a few minutes P.M. Friday March 21 30°. Another beautiful day. Anna took a walk, called at Belles. Aunt Julia is quite sick. Haunning got mad at Hannas dog. Aunt Vina went over and got Belle and walked down to Mothers to let her know how Aunt Julia was, Eve. Mrs. McLeod called P.M., told about Donalds funny sayings, "cute". Anna is reading the Man From Glengarry. Saturday March 22 Anna woke me up about 4 oclock. She was crying with pain but hardly knew that they meant anything. We did not get right up but talked about what we better do. Anna got breakfast and then called Aunt Vina. I went to work, telephoned for nurse & Dr. I had so many papers I was discouraged, got out 12 min. late and worked as fast as I could. Hurried home and found Anna out in the back yard watching fire engine put out grass fire. I went to work in afternoon, came home and Flora was here. At 5 Anna had pains as regular as clock work every 5 min. The Nurse got here about 10 A.M. The Dr. came then but did not stay. He came in Eve, went away, came back about 9, went to bed, but about 10:30 business began. Sunday March 23 We thought sure it would be born before 12 last night but it waited untill 12:40 so it was born on Mothers birthday. I wonder if I will ever forget this night. Flora was down stairs scared I suppose. And Dr, Nurse and I with Anna. When the baby came it gave a gasp then turned her up in good shape till they rolled it in blankets and laid him on the couch. And got Anna tended to, then the nurse washed the baby and dressed him. The Dr ate a lunch and went away about 2. Geo. and Anna called last Eve. but did not stay. I went to work feeling pretty tough. I was lame and sore. Mother and Father called. I went down in the morning and told them, stopped at Belles on my way back and told them. Belle & Maggie & Inez Hart called during the day and said the baby was the sweetest thing. Flora went home Sunday A.M. I wrote to Grandma, Cora, Herbert, Ernie, Aunt Cornelia. Anna did fine and is doing fine since. Monday March 24 I did not work but ran errands, bought things. Went down to Mothers in A.M., went down town P.M. and bought numerous things including box of cigars. Walked up to J. McGees but he had no butter then came home and watched baby, wrote to Grandma, got Anna some flowers. Belle & Edna called. Edna held baby for some time. I think we have a dandy baby, he seems bright and good looking. Tuesday March 25 I went to work this morning and passed around the cigars, everybody took one except Powel and he dont smoke. Stood a good deal of Jolly. But rather enjoyed it. Stopped at Mrs. Oullette and told her, she was so surprised and glad and said she would come see it. Annas milk began to come this morning and the baby nursed all day. He opens his eyes and looks around as though he noticed things. The nurse has gone home to call this Eve. We have had beautiful weather and it makes it so pleasant. Wednesday March 26 Well this weather beats all the March weather I ever saw. Anna still improves and the Dr. thinks she is all right. We like the Dr. all through and the nurse too is so good and kind and fixes nice things for Anna to eat. I think we are getting through good and lucky. And the baby well of course there never was such a baby. Flora sent a box of violets and a letter. I suppose it is hard for them to stay away. We are having so many grass fires now, I think the kids must be having a picnic. Thursday March 27 60°. It rained last night a warm spring rain. And when I was going to work this morning I heard robins singing and it seemed as though spring has come for sure. Mrs. McLeod called to see the baby this Eve. Anna is feeling fine today. The baby has a touch of jaundice and is as yellow as can be. The nurse gave him a dose of olive oil to night but does not want the Dr. to know because he does not believe in giving medicine to so young a baby unless it is possitively necessary. Paid the gas bill today. Friday March 28 50°. When I got up this morning I could not see across the road it was so foggy and it rained steady all day. The most disagreeable day I have put in in a good while. And my birthday too. Well I do not want many like this one. Anna continues to improve. The Dr. said it made him feel silly to keep coming and nothing for him to do. And the baby well he is just all right. Cecil Rhodes is dead. When "Kruger" was ask for his oppinion on his death he said, The Lord giveth & the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord. Rhodes might have [been] a 2nd Geo. Washington, But he wasn't. Saturday March 29 50°. Looked like [rain] in the A.M. but turned out bright in P.M. Anna had her 1st visitor today. Geo. & Anna came over and was the first to come up stairs. She loved the baby most to death. Saw one whinny kid barefooted today. Sunday March 30 Rain, my how it rained this morning and thundered once or twice. Worked today. Aunt Cornelia came to dinner today. Said the baby looked like a mummy. McLeod & Donald called and gave us bottle of wine, Easter egg & card. Aunt Cornelia gave the baby a card too. Got a letter from Northville with card in it. Mother & Father came this P.M. and staid to supper. Inez Hart called to see the baby, she likes to hold and watch him. Well the baby is a week old today. He has not smiled yet only in his sleep. Seems to notice some things but does not have his eyes open much just nurses and crys when he is hungry. Monday March 31 35°. Well this has been a March day to be sure. The City looked this morning like a lake with a layer of snow on top of it. But the snow only stayed till about noon. It has rained and blew to its hearts content. Babys navel came off yesterday. Today is the 9th day of Anna's sickness and she has felt first rate but her temperature was a little higher. Baby just begins to look all around and it seemed to night as tho he tried to smile. Jim's wife & baby and Grandma & another lady called this P.M. They have a nice baby. Mrs. Sutherland came in this A.M. and made quite a fuss over baby. |

April 1902Tuesday April 1 35°. This has been another gloomy cold windy day. The Dr. said there was no use coming anymore, every thing all OK and going along fine, fine boy etc. So I paid him, beside the 1st examination and one consultation he came Sat. A.M. & Eve to stay till 2 A.M., then Sun., Mon, Tues, Wed, Thur, Fri, Sun & Today. He said Anna could get up any time now but not to get tired. But the nurse wanted her to wait a day or two. I think the nurse is onto her job OK. Wednesday April 2 35°. Another gloomy, windy day, cold. The sun has not shone since Sat. Anna was bolstered up in bed today and is to sit up tomorrow. Aunt Vina went home today a little sick but I guess more home sick to see her Mother than any thing else. It dont seem as tho she had been much help to us at all. She works but it seems as tho Anna had to work just as hard. She wanted to go so much and was sick so we could not depend on her. And now after keeping her for 6 weeks to have her at this time, she goes home. Went to bank today and after butter at McGee's. The baby improves right along and is getting cute. Thursday April 3 35°. It was a fine day today, cold but clear and sunshiny. Went down to an auction at 320 Harrison at noon but it was all over. Went up to Mothers for a few minutes, they were at dinner. Mrs. Oullette called about supper time, said nice things about the baby and visited a short time but the nurse sent Annas supper up and she thought she must go, we like her so much. Hieghie next door has a party, Elmer was there. Friday April 4 30°. It was pretty cold early this morning and a very heavy frost. The trees and wires were just coated heavy with frost but the sun came out bright and made it so pleasant. Belle came over about 4 P.M. and staid with Anna while the nurse went home so as to be there when the minister called. The baby has been so good lately, has not cryed once hardly, and sleeps most of the time day and night. Anna sat up about an hour today. Saturday April 5 30°. Cold this morning but turned out warm and pleasant. We just have awful loads of mail lately. Mrs. Parks is to stay till Wednesday. Anna sat up about 1 1/2 hours and then laid down again, and again sat up and ate her supper in the large chair. Baby has thrown up his dinner twice lately. I think he must eat to much. Mrs. Parks little Blanch was here to night and ate some biscuit & syrup for supper. Sunday April 6 Cold rain in the morning, but it cleared and was nice most to the day, but was cloudy in P.M. Mabel came about 9 A.M. just as I was starting for work. Edna was here when I got home. David came in P.M. He would not touch the baby and laugh at it. Belle called with Roy. And Mrs. McLeod called. Monday April 7 Down to freezing and it seems colder. Norine came in and staid all day and went home with Mabel at night. Inez called. Geo. and Anna called on their way down to Mothers. I thought the baby looked like Geo. Anna seems to think he is so nice. Tuesday April 8 30°. Well this is different again. When I woke up this morning there was 1 1/2 inches of snow on the ground and still snowing. But it stopped soon and the snow was all gone at noon. High wind all day, raining this Eve. Bell was over P.M. Telephoned the Dr. that baby was tongue tied. He said he would tend to it. Every body says such a strong baby, he can sit up as straight and could almost from the 1st. He just loves to sit in the bowl in water and take a bath. Looks around and wonders at things. And does not want to go "wet", wants to be changed right off. Wednesday April 9 Warmer but not pleasant, damp. Aunt Vina came back about 5 P.M. but she does not feel very well. The nurse did a good days work, done most of the ironing, got supper, bathed the baby and put up her duds and left. I paid her $7 to night for ballance since Sat. noon, makes $27 in all. We like her for a nurse but she is no poor mans nurse. And she carries her nerve around with her. Anna felt a little incompetent to take the care of baby and shed a few tears. Thursday April 10 45°. Today has been a beautiful warm day. Two horrible murders were committed last night. Geo. Heywood shot by a Mr. Jones as he was coming home from a dance. Jones roomed at Heywoods home. And Miss Carrie Jennett was murdered and horribly cut and mutilated by her music teacher, Prof. Miller, on 13th between Antoinette & McGraw, just outside my route. People were standing talking and viewing the spot when I went up 12th this A.M. Baby will not go to sleep and is crying awfully. I am afraid he will tire Anna out. Friday April 11 Colder. Well we got quieted down last night and got along better today. Prof. Miller confesses to his crime. Went down got some butter and got Aunt Vina a syringe. Mother was up P.M., walked a piece with her home. Took car down town after supper. Saturday April 12 Cold raw wind today. Ordered 1/2 ton of coke. Mails are awfully heavy lately. Prof. Miller taken to Jackson to serve life sentence. Baby is hard to get quieted down to sleep nights and Anna gets pretty tired. For the last two nights I have got up in the night and got Anna a cup of tea. Delia & Belle called. Sunday April 13 Cold. I have not been out of the house today. Got up at 4 A.M., got a cup of tea and ate some crackers, brought Anna a cup and went back to bed and got up about 8. Lydia came to dinner and staid all day. Belle, Sam, & Elmer called this P.M. Clara & Josie Oullette called, they are so nice for children. Gave the baby a dose of olive oil and he strangled so that we were scared most to pieces. Monday April 14 Cold, but a most beautiful day. Got my coke in, am afraid I am not going to like it. Got hair cut after supper, bought 1/2 pint alcohol. Had a picnic with the baby untill 10 P.M. He seems to have to cry about so long each night, and I get so tired and Anna too. Tuesday April 15 Cool, and another beautiful day. Hurried around this morning to get to an auction sale at 1315 - 3rd. Thought they had some things I would like to buy but did not like the looks of them. Belle & Aunt Vina went too, but I did not get there before they left. Mrs. Jim McFarlan called. Inez called. Wednesday April 16 40°. Nice warm day but no sunshine. Nothing unusual today. Reported 10 minutes later this P.M. Baby cries awfully at night untill he gets quieted down. Saw Hammings little boy today and a fine little fellow he is. John C. Griffen died this A.M. of Pneumonia. Thursday April 17 Warm and rather pleasant, but no sun. Started but only a few sprinkles. Bought a bottle of Horse Radish of Mrs. Meyers. Mother up to dinner and most of the P.M. Washed my hair to night. Carriers are to meet at Griffens house to night at 8, but I did not go. Friday April 18 Warm, very fine day. Jim Hawley killed his brother last night. Mrs. Rockwell called and talked insurance. Mrs. Parks called. this baby was crying, she took him and he immediately stopped and went to sleep and slept all Eve. Got a letter form Mother today. Saturday April 19 50°. It begins to feel quite like spring. Wore my summer coat P.M. Saw a piece in the Tribune this morning in favor of Salary Bill, it created quite a flurry. Thought I would go down town after supper but was too tired. Edna came up to take a bath. Sunday April 20 Beautiful spring day. Got up at 6:30, had plenty of time to get ready for work. Mrs. Ouellette called on her way home from early church. Flo. came soon after I went to work. We all baby, Flo, Anna & I went over to Hardenbergs P.M., showed the baby to Aunt Julia. She said it was a nice baby but I really think she could not see it. Aunt Vina went down to Mothers.
Monday April 21 Warm. Flo. had to go to the car alone last night. The baby seemed to need both Anna & I. Margaret Hanna has a birthday party to night and all the little folks around here attended, she was 6 yesterday. Talked with Mr. Talbot about steam cookers. He said he was going to get a dozen and that I could have them $1.00 less than regular price. I said I would take one at that price and try and sell some too. Tuesday April 22 80°. Well this is a hummer, the thermometer went up to 80° and was near there all day. And the wind blew a hurricane. I felt as though I wanted to shed my heavy underware and let the fire go out. I went down to Mothers after supper and talked about what was going to become of her if Edna Married. And I can't help but worry about it. And now we will see if there was any use of worrying about it. The baby frets and crys so in the evening. It seems as though he must cry just about so much everyday. Wednesday April 23 50°. Well today it is back cold again. Today I am glad I have my heavy underware on and that we have a fire. I think we have pretty well paid for the fine weather we had in March. And now the spring is so dry and backward, I should think the farmers could not plough or sow anything. Aunt Vina & Belle went down to see Mrs. Rockwells furniture this P.M. and thought it a bargain at $11. Anna sewed on buttons and fixed my vest pocket to night. Measured the baby, he was about 20 or 21 inches long and 8 or 9 inches back. Thursday April 24 40°. Cold in the morning but the sun came out beautifully and it has been a grand day. And that awful wind has gone goodness knows where, or cares. Went down to Mothers at noon and borrowed spade. Spaded a little at night but am to tired to enjoy gardening. Mrs. Rockwell called and settled the furniture business, Aunt Vina is to pay $10 for the set. Lydia came about supper time. It is her birthday "29". She & Aunt Vina has gone down to Mothers to call, 8:30 P.M. Baby crying. Friday April 25 Well I worked in the rain all A.M. and it has been a hard day. I get so tired it seems as tho I must be out of sorts some way. I planted sweet peas at the side of the house today noon. Another murder today, a boy shot a man while quarreling with him. The high prices of meat is causing a good deal of agitation lately. Saturday April 26 50°. Wind, well I should say so, this has been a corker, 59 miles an hour the weather man says. And I dont think he stretched it any. It would blow you to a standstill on a wheel but I rode just the same. Burt Hart came up after supper to borrow our bed pan. Said his Mother had fallen again and dislocated her wrist and hip and the Drs did not think she could live. It is so cold or seems so that we have the folding door shut and a good hot fire. And yet feel the cold as much as last winter. Sunday April 27 Warm & pleasant. Went to church A.M. Heard a minister form Paris, liked him at first but his sermon did not hold out as good. Aunt Vina went ahead then when I came from church Anna, the baby & I took the car down to Mothers. Baby was as good as could be & seemed to enjoy it. McFarlanes called after we came home, they had rented a house cor. Trumbull & Lysander. We went down to see how Mrs. Hart was. She was getting along but in awful pain. Lew [son of Aunt Mary Joy Cudworth?] & wife called. Monday April 28 Beautiful morning this morning, just beginning to feel summery and everything is starting up and looking so green and clean. Went to see about sending Aunt Vina's dresser to Plymouth. Leonard said he would see to it, 1.50. Went up to Talbots before dinner and got our steam cooker, $3.50. Took it over and showed it to the firemen. Then stopped and showed it to Mrs. Hatch, all liked it but the price. Anna & I went to the depot and met Grandma C. [Clarkson] & Aunt Helen who arrived from Chicago on the 7:58 P.M. Tuesday April 29 Not so nice today. Rained in the afternoon so Grandma thought she better not go to Northville today but Aunt Helen thought she must go and went to take the 1:30 P.M. train. Grandma seems the same and really seems stronger and better than when she went away. I got some film yesterday and must be after taking the baby's picture. I wish I could keep a picture of him now, and every month or so, because we will soon forget how he looked when he was a baby. Wednesday April 30 60°. This has been a most beautiful day and I could not help but wish it would stay so. Still we have to keep a fire yet on babys account. Baby is so good lately and he will smile once in a while but it is hard work and he tries so hard to talk or make noises that he gets red in the face. And sometimes seems to deliberately wink one eye. Took Grandma over to the car today noon and saw her off to Northville. |

May 1902Thursday May 1 Well this is a most beautiful day. And the 1st of May, how time flies. Got my money today noon and went down to McGees bought some butter and several things, pint jar of strawberries for 8¢, asperagus, Etc. On my way home I met Winters and he said they came near losing their baby boy Sunday with pneumonia. Aunt Vina left to night, I paid her at the rate of $2 a week and I suppose we will have to go it alone now. I hope we can get along all right. Said grace at the supper table for the 1st time. I have wanted to for a long time, I hope I will keep it up. Friday May 2 Woke up this morning and found it raining and it had rained quite a bit. It stopped long enough for me to get to work but rained again about 10. I found my rear tire flat and thought I was in for it but pumped it up and it held all right. Had to get [my] own breakfast and that seemed kind of hard but I suppose I will get used to it. Came home to dinner found Anna trying to get dinner and the baby just whooping it right up. She said he had demanded so much attention that she could not do much. We had dinner about 1 and had asparagus and strawberry short cake cooked in the cooker, and it was good. Letter from Herbert. Saturday May 3 Beautiful day. went up to Mrs. Burns on my way home and paid the rent. Anna borrowed Sutherlands carriage and took the baby down to Aunt Dills. I went down town in the Eve. to the bank, then over to Sullivans looking at baby go carts, then out on Chene, back on Gratiot, then over on Woodward, got a glass of soda, then went up in the Bemlet bldg. to the carriers meeting, did not stay long, and McLeod & I came home, 10:30. Anna was waiting for me and got along OK Sunday May 4 Got up this morning and took a bath and put on my summer underwear. It has been a warm one today, got up to 84° in the shade. Our fire is going yet and I guess seeing as how we are going to have a thunder storm, I will fill up the stove once more for fear it may turn cold tomorrow. Stopped on my way home from work today and got my bicycle from Barries. Aunt Ella came in today and went down to Aunt Dills in the A.M., staid here the rest of the time then went home about 7 P.M. Attempted to take the babies picture today. Dont know how good they will be, not very I guess. Maggie called. Monday May 5 50°. It seemed rather cool this morning and looked like rain, and it did sprinkle once or twice but it got warm enough before night. I went down town after work and looked at more baby carriages and I dont believe I know any more what I want now than I did in the first place. Came home feeling sick and achie. Took 4 grains of Quinine when I went to bed. Woke up about 12 sicker than a dog. I ached & stretched till I thought I would bust. Took some more quinine but it did not seem to do any good. Tuesday May 6 I was too sick to go to work this morning. I ached & stretched last night till 12 then had chills. Anna put the hot water bottle to my feet and I soon began to sweat. And how I did sweat. I was soon ringing wet. I threw out the water bottles and began to cool off. But this morning I had a headache and felt so weak and [not] sleeping much, I felt as though I could not go to work. I guess the baby is sick today. He has cried all the A.M. and would not quiet down and go to sleep. Big thunder & wind storm this P.M. Looked pretty dark and scary. Saw the lightening strike the Electric light on the corner, it popped like a pistol and lit for a second. Wednesday May 7 60°. Some cooler this morning, looks like more storm. Feel better but a little weak, went to work and got around in good shape. Asked the lawn mowers what they will mow ours and Southerlands lawn for. He wanted $6 for the season, guess I will try & get Roy. Dr. Miller called this P.M. Said the baby had a nice face, wonder how many Mothers he has told the same thing. Thursday May 8 Nice day, warmer. Tried taking more pictures of the baby. Roy cut the Lawn after school. Edna called after supper on her way to stay at Perkins while a boarder of Perkins staid at Mothers with a child sick with scarlet fever [Will Perkins is a cousin of Bennett and Edna. Will's mother was their Aunt Lousina Joy who married to William Perkins Sr. He founded and ran the "Perkins Hotel" at Grand River & Cass crossing until the 1890's and owned a number of Detroit boarding houses into the early 1900's which were later run by his son William Jr.]. Planted flowers late in the Eve. Went to bed tired out. Friday May 9 Cold. Well did you ever see the beat of this for May. The paper claimed there was a slight frost this morning and that the thermometer went down to freezing. I know it was so cold that my fingers ached riding on my wheel and one felt the need of gloves and an overcoat. Went down town after work and bought a lamp, trays, powder, Etc. to develop pictures. And I developed after dark and everything worked fine. Maggie was over while we were eating supper. Went down to Mothers at noon to take her sheets back. Saturday May 10 Well this has been a May day for your life. It snowed good and hard this forenoon for 2 hours. The snow melted on the ground as soon as it fell but I know it got sloppy before I got home and my feet were sopping wet. Sunday May 11 Well this is just the reverse of yesterday. Beautiful sunshiny day. I got up this morning at 6:30 and got my breakfast, to see if I would have my Sunday headache, and I did not, and enjoyed the day. Did not go to church but staid at home and helped Anna with the dinner. And no one came to see us and the day seemed kind of long. Monday May 12 Nice day today. Nothing unusual today. I went down town after work to look at baby buggies again and made up my mind, after going to Barkers and Detroit Picture company, that I would go back to Gray & Baffys. I can't see for the life how those places get their reputation for selling cheap. I think you can buy things just as cheap at Gray & Baffy or Kenaan & Jahn and have a choice of nicer stock. Tuesday May 13 Raining when I got up and rained till about 9. Went down to Gray & Baffy and bought a buggie for $16, more than I wanted to pay but I could not find anything cheaper to suit me. This one is damaged but I am to use it till they can order a new one for me. I saw a writing desk I liked real well for $12.50. Wednesday May 14 Still cold, some say there was a frost. I did not see it but can easily believe it, as it was cold enough. When I came to get my wheel to come in from route. I found the hind wheel flat, pumped it up and got down to Berrys. Had it fixed for P.M. trip, 25¢. Went down to the corner of Col. & Woodward "Dotys" and bought a bottle of toner. Toned some pictures in the Eve. Got to bed about 10:30, did not rest well. Dr. Bell came this P.M. and cut the babies tongue. The baby cried good and hard but it did not hurt long. Thursday May 15 Cold again today. And I do not feel well, headaches and feel bad all over. I think it is so cold then my underwear is too thin, I ought not to have changed. Baby seemed a little restless last night, I think his tongue must hurt him some. Anna & Baby went down to Mrs. Ouellettes in the P.M. She learned that Mrs. Peasall had bought a place out on Grummond and moved out there. Friday May 16 [not entry] Saturday May 17 Warmer today. Anna and Baby went to Northville on the 1 oclock car. I got Wilford to work for me tomorrow and took the 8 oclock car for Northville. Dave stopped here on his way home from Flint. He is going to work for Godfrey. Sunday May 18 Well we are in Northville today. It is warm and pleasant but seems like rain. Everybody admires the Baby and he is so good, I dont see how they can help. It just laid around and did nothing till about 4. Then we went up to Norines. Ted had hurt his foot and could not walk very well. While we were at Norines a big rain storm came up but it stopped enough for us to get home. Came home on the 8:30 car. Dave came with me. Monday May 19 Well today has been awful hot, up to 90° I guess. I sweat more than I usually do in midsummer. Dave went to work at Godfreys this morning. Edna came up in the Eve. to stay. Not very pleasant getting along this way. I got my dinner today and washed up the dishes and was so tired I did not feel like going to work. Tuesday May 20 It is hot enough today, but is not so bad as yesterday. I got my dinner today, but did not wash the dishes and had lots more time to rest. Wrote a letter to Anna after dinner. I suppose today is the day that Cubas long dream is realized and she is at last free. Well I hope they will enjoy a long prosperous life as a Nation. Wednesday May 21 It is cool and delightful today. Did not get a letter from Anna this A.M. as I expected, wonder what is the matter. Took my shoes down to the shop at noon. Edna went over to Sams after supper and had quite a visit. Thursday May 22 Warm today. Got a letter from Anna saying that the baby grunts and grows and its Grandma just loves it most to death. We are getting along first rate but I am so tired at night I dont feel much like going to store and getting supper. Went after my shoes tonight and was surprised that they were only 65¢ for taps, patches and heal plates. Edna & Mason have gone to the Opera tonight. Friday May 23 Very warm & muggy today. Big rain storm between 1 & 2 P.M. Nothing of consequence happened today that I know of. My right foot feels like rhumatism tonight, it has ached all day. Edna has gone down to Mothers. Dave said he was going over to McFarlanes. I wish I was in bed. Roy cut the lawn tonight. Saturday May 24 Nice day. Anna came home today. I took the baby buggy and went to meet the 11:30 car and there they were, Anna, baby & Mabel and butter & eggs, & baggage. We loaded the buggy & carried the baby home. I had dinner ready and we sat right down and ate. I was awfully tired at night and was glad to get to bed. Dave I guess went to the Opera. And Edna went out to Jims. Dave gave me two $ for his board this week. Sunday May 25 Had to work today to pay Wilford for working for me last Sunday. Sam & Belle called in the afternoon. Monday May 26 Anna & Mabel cleaned house a little. Mabel went home on the 7 car. Dave took his departure for his new boarding house down on Grand River somewhere. Cold tonight, overcoat feels good out. While I was eating breakfast this morning my tire blew up and I had to jump and run to get to work on time. I took it to Berries tonight. Tuesday May 27 42°. Cold, awful cold for May. People wearing overcoats & gloves. Monkeyed with Berry all day getting my wheel, rode one of his all day. Started the coal fire today noon and I can tell you it felt good. They say there is to be a frost tomorrow morning. Wednesday May 28 Colder still this morning, down to 38°. I did not see the frost but they say there was a slight one. Mrs. Walker here today. I have got a corn on my right foot that hurts dreadfully. I do not feel very well lately, get awfully tired and have that tired feeling you read about. Belle & Katie Fisk called this P.M. Thursday May 29 Warming up today. Nothing happened today that I can think of. Went down and watched the carriers play ball after work a while. Friday May 30 Well today is decoration day. And a most beautiful day it has been. I suppose the carriers marched but I did not go down at all. I fixed my wheel, put up screen doors and tried to fix the gear on the baby carriage but did not succeed very well. Anna went for a walk with the baby. Edna & Mason went to Wonderland, came home to supper and then went to Lyceum. Maggie came over in the evening. Pay day today. Saturday May 31 Nice day. Well I think we paid for our holiday yesterday. The Mail was just awful this morning. Went down town after supper and bought a lot of things, straw hat, underwear, Etc. Anna went with me to look at Buffets but Grays was closed and so was Keenan & Jahn so went to Metzers, found one to suit us for $28. Anna came home and I staid. Met Hofrichler and his whole family. I wore my shirt waist all the week but it was so cold. I had my coat & vest over it untill this P.M. |

June 1902Sunday June 1 Warm day. Worked today and it was the easiest 1st of the month I ever experienced. Edna went to spend the day with Tina McKay. It was so hot we did not go for a walk. I walked down to see the houses on Calumet. Monday June 2 Circus day. It was raining when I went to work but did not rain again untill about 8 P.M. then we had a hard shower to cool off the circus. I went up to the grounds and went clear around all the tents. It was quite a sight. Well the papers say the Boer War is settled and the Boers get all they asked for but Independence but are promised self government in the course of time. Tuesday June 3 Another rainy day. Warm & muggy, disagreeable. Went up to pay rent and Mrs. Burns has gone up to live with her son so I did not get it paid. Dave called this Eve. Edna brought home two boxes of cigars for Buchanan. Edna has gone over to Hardenburgs. Anna & I are up stairs getting ready for bed. Howard is crying for his din din. He is so cute these days, laughs & notices things, grabs everything he can in his mouth. I had my face down to his tonight and he grabbed a hold of my nose. Wednesday June 4 Today is childrens day at the Island and I suppose they are having a great time. It has been a lovely day but it turned rather cool in the evening. Edna came home to dinner and brought 6 Pineapples and brought 6 more at night, and she and Anna have spent the night slicing them. Had a lovely short cake for supper "good" but did not sleep very well on it. Mothers fever card was taken down today. Thursday June 5 Very pleasant day, cool this morning but delightful. Mrs. Burns called for the rent, she lives with her son at 66 Hooker Ave. After supper Edna came up with Clarence and packed up and took her departure for home, the fever patient gone. Cleaned up in the back yard tonight. Teamster strike in Chicago settled this morning and it was a victory for the strikers. Friday June 6 Rainy today. Forgot to hang up my key and found it attached to my belt when I got home and I rode back on my wheel and I was so mad I could hardly see straight. Saturday June 7 Well today is the day of all days for Buchanan and the last of the campaign for the delegates for the Denver convention, for tonight is the election. Buchanan has certainly worked for it. It was raining when I went down town and was raining when I came home. I walked around on Woodward awhile, met little Griffen, went into Geo. J. Reindals to look at buffets. Bought some peanut candy and went up to the hall. Found a big crowd there, was appointed one of the 6 tellers. The election was very close but Buchanan got one vote the most and was declared elected. All of his supporters yelled and picked him up and carried him to the chair where he made a very good speech. Sunday June 8 A most delightful day. We were to have the baby christened and we expected some of the Northville folks in but no one materialized. And we did not get ready very fast on account of that. And because we thought we might as well wait, we finally made a desperate effort and started out and got there to late. They were just through, so we turned around and went over to Harts and called. Coming home we met Belle, Maggie & Mother coming home from church. Mother came and staid to dinner and part of the afternoon then went over to call on Hardenburgs. Baby looked so sweet and pretty when we had him all ready. I was sorry we was late, seems as though he never could look better. Monday June 9 A fine day this has been. A little chilly in the Eve. Well Buchanan does not enjoy his victory much. In his speech Sat. night he called Chris to account for something he had done when Buchanan was a sub. and of course the defeated element chose to make the most of his breech of etiquette and are making life miserable for him. Baby is laying on the bed amusing himself sucking his fist. He is as good and sweet as he can be. We are up stairs enjoying an evening in the front room, it is so much more pleasant. Tuesday June 10 Cool in the morning but turned real cold in the Evening. Got a letter from Mamma Clarkson. Played ball after work over cor. Pictman & Trumbell. Wednesday June 11 Cold in the morning but turned hot in the afternoon. Took a ride around up 15-16 & 23rd at noon. Strung up the sweet peas. Mr. Mourow called & talked house. Mrs. McFarlane called. Thursday June 12 Warm in P.M., cold in A.M. Went to see lot on Brooklyn & Putnam but did not like it any to well. Played ball after work a while. Big rain & wind storm about 6:30. So dark we lit the light for supper, but afterward the sun came out and we put out the gas and could see to read. It is comical to see the baby catch sight of one of his hands, then try and get it to his mouth. He will hold it up and steer it for his mouth and it may strike him in the eye or on the cheek or go one side of his face, any old place but his mouth. Friday June 13 Rainy all A.M. Hot and muggy. Mowed the back yard after work. Got my hair cut. Bought a window screen. Edna called to tell us that Ernie & wife was coming tomorrow Eve. Got magazines yesterday. Saturday June 14 Hot and rainy. Rain seems to be in order lately. I guess the country must be flooded. Ernie & Anna came in this P.M. and are to stay all right. Mother went out there to keep house while they are away. Sutherlands went away today noon, to be gone as we suppose all summer. Sunday June 15 Well I guess it rained and thundered all night and is keeping up the record to rain every day in good shape. Ernie & Anna went up to Geos. this forenoon. Worked today. We were going up to Geos. this P.M. but of course it rained so we could not take the baby. Maggie came over this Eve. It is very hot and close. Monday June 16 Raining in the morning, but cleared up nice. Took down the stove after work. Worked till 9 P.M. on the thing, cleaning, storing, Etc. Bert Gillett went insane, dont seem but a day or 2 that I saw him working on the R. R. Buchanan paid for cigars, $3.50. Went to see 49 Reed Place at noon. Was disappointed. Tuesday June 17 Did not rain today, it has been a beautiful day. Bought and hulled 9 qt. of strawberries today noon. Anna canned them after supper. Aunt Lizzie called. Wednesday June 18 Cool and delightful. Aunt Cornilia here to dinner. Strung up sweet peas in back yard & mowed the lawn. Finished up a few things about the stove after supper. Thursday June 19 This has been a most delightful day, cool and pleasant. Sam & I went down to the Fellowcraft Club this Eve. to shake hands with Madden & Gov. Bliss. It was a very informal affair. Friday June 20 Well a little different again today. It has been quite cool and cloudy. Had to get my tire fixed today, it has bothered me for a number of days but today it gave out entirely. May and the children came last night but I did not see them. Mother got home today. Anna took the baby down there this P.M. for a ride. Saturday June 21 Very cool today, too cool for comfort. Had to walk to work this morning on account of tire. Got it fixed to ride to district. Jones was convicted of Heywoods murder, jury out only 5 minutes. Went over on Grand River about bed time to buy some candy. Sunday June 22 Cold today, had a fire in the grate all day. Went to church in A.M. Anna, I and the baby went down to call on the Harts. Found Mrs. Hart in a wheel chair. Inez gone to church. Went from there down to Aullettes, made a short call and came home. We had two little showers today. Baby is keeping awake late tonight. Monday June 23 Very cold for this time of the year. One or two heavy rain showers. And a heavy hail storm about 6 P.M., big hail stones as large as hickory nuts. And the paper said that it snowed as well as hailed on Belle Isle. Went down to Mothers in the Eve. and got some potatoes. Tuesday June 24 So cold this morning that my fingers felt cold going to work on my wheel. But it warmed up a little when the sun came out. The papers are saying that King Edward is seriously sick, has had an operation and may not live. The corination has been indefinately posponed. Wednesday June 25 This has been a horrible nasty rainy day. I got wet through. I guess it is never going to quit raining. King Edward still alive but is very low. It is too bad that he has got to die with out being crowned. We had a heavy mail this P.M. and I am tired and wet. Thursday June 26 Cold but pleasant. Went to see "Pousse Cafe" at the Avenue. McInerry, Buchanan, Peters & Waite were [there]. Jim Corbet was there in a box seat. The play was good but not as good as Fiddle Te Dee. Friday June 27 Beautiful day today but cool yet. Went down town at noon, paid gas bill and bought Buffet at Keenan & Jahn for $23.00 Saturday June 28 Pleasant day to work, but looked like rain all day. And did rain some all evening. Buffet came in A.M. we like it but it seems small. McLeod invited us up to dinner tomorrow. Cold in the Eve. Sunday June 29 Well it just rained & rained all last night and till about 10 A.M. but it did not look pleasant then. Worked, went in the rain and the ground was just flooded. Went home from work with McLeod. Anna was there with the baby when we arrived. We staid to dinner & supper. McLeod & I went over and called on Hoffrichter in the P.M., had a good visit. Monday June 30 And it rained all last night and all day today. Just about as dissagreeable a day as one could imagine. The ground is flooded and it seems as though it never would stop raining. But this is the last day of the month and I am in hopes that it will clear up and start in the 1st of July and be nice. We have not had any summer at all yet and people cannot remember so backwward a summer ever. I have wore my coat all through this month. It has not been warm enough to even feel comfortable and we have had to have a fire a good many days. Went down to Mothers in P.M. and she was suffering with a cold and also with the cold damp weather. |

July 1902Tuesday July 1 Well now you see it is just as I said it would clear up. It has been a beautiful day and everybody seems to appreciate it too. Everyone was saying, well dont this seem nice to have the sun shine over more, hope it will continue Etc. Mowed the back yard and cut weeds. After supper Anna took baby over and sat on Hannas steps awhile. She thought the baby had taken cold and was quite frightened about it. He coughed and his throat rattled as though it was filled with phlegm, but I guess it was not anything serious. "Good night" Wednesday July 2 Another rainy day. I am so discouraged over the weather that it seems as though it was never going to be nice again. One could almost believe the world was coming to an end. But I do not feel well today, my head aches and I think I must have a decided blue spell. Anna is getting baby ready for bed and he is cooing and talking so cute and cunning. I ought to feel good. Mother was up the P.M. Bought a shaving brush for 25¢ and it is no good. Thursday July 3 More rain last night. Came off Hot today, coming so sudden it is almost unbearable. Went up on Hooker Ave. and found Mrs. Burns and paid the rent. Friday July 4 Glorious Fourth. Rained last night but today has been sunshiny. And awful hot, the heat seems terrible. The snapping and cracking did not seem to abate one bit all day. Worked this A.M. and big mail and no street car tickets. Came home ate my dinner and suffered with the heat. Did manage to build a shelf for the celar way. But baby and I sweat barrels. Not much fire works around here in the Eve. The neighbors all seems to have a few little ones but nothing like last year. The mosquitoes were so bad we should not stay out doors so had to watch from a window. Saturday July 5 Another awful hot day. Only for the refuse on the streets this morning one would never know we had a 4th. Everything stopped so sudden. Too hot to go out in the Country for tomorrow. Too hot to go down town, so I just did nothing. My miserable tire gave out again today, and I ordered a new $3.50 tire. I have had more trouble with tires this year than ever before. Sunday July 6 Still hot, awfully hot. A good breeze is blowing but it dont seem to do much good. Went to church and swealtered, not many there, spoke with Mrs. Pearsoll. Came home and baby and I occupied the floor a good share of the day. Went down to Mothers for a walk after supper, she had just got home from spending the 4th at Plymouth. Monday July 7 Well it had to rain again today. Shower this forenoon and a big one this afternoon. The mail was light for Monday. Berry did not get my wheel fixed up today. Rode one of his all day. Tuesday July 8 Well this has been quite a decent day, hot but pleasant. Decided to have Berrie put on a Palmer Quad tire at $4.75. Did not want to pay that much but he thought it would last 2 years, we will see. The tires I bought last Jan. did not pan out very well so do not think it pays to buy cheap tires and now we will see if it pays to buy dear ones. Belle & Sam strolled over this Eve. and sat on the steps and the kids followed of course, we had a good visit. And all the while baby lay on the dining room floor asleep as nice as you please. And has not woke up yet as we are going to bed. Wednesday July 9 Oh of course it rained again today and I think it is getting cooler now as the breeze coming in seems quite cool. I have not felt well today and feel all fagged out to night. In fact it seems about all I can do is to work and sleep. I do not feel equal to going any or doing the little odd jobs I would like to do around the house. Thursday July 10 Well this has been a most delightful day, no rain and cool and bright. Buffalo Bill is in town today, went up today noon and saw some of the parade and the tents and free show. Sam & Roy went tonight and asked me to go with them but I dont seem to care much about going so thought I would wait till my boy was big enough then I would take him. Katie Fisk was over this Eve. and visited a while. Friday July 11 One more fine day. Anna & Baby took 2 oclock car for Northville to attend Norines birthday party tomorrow. Came home from work, ate a bread & milk supper and got ready and went down town, Woodward ave. Got a glass of punch & a box of tooth picks, talcom powder and came home. Saturday July 12 Nice day today too, 3 beautiful & delightful cool days, "wonderful". Got my dinner down on Grand River. Bought a pair of shoes of Steers, $2.00. Went down town and paid gas bill and up Woodward to work. Bread & milk supper. Anna & Baby came home on 8 oclock car. Sunday July 13 Nice day today but Hot. While we were at breakfast the door bell rang. I fished out a nickel and went to the door thinking it was the paper boy and there stood Harold. Paper boy never came today. Went to work, came home to dinner and then we went down to Mothers. May and Dorothy was there, the first time we had seen Dorothy. Staid to supper and came home. The mosquitoes are so thick now adays that one just cannot be out of doors in the Eve. Monday July14 Had to go and rain again this afternoon. I guess it wanted to lay the dust for the Elks first day or run their banner colors together. Rode my wheel around on my route this P.M. in rain and hurried home to tend to baby so Anna could go down town. She got down just as the stores were closing but managed to get a pair of shoes. Went over on Grand River after supper and got a bottle of Castoria, charcoal tablets and a dish to go under the ice box, but it was to high so I suppose I will have the pleasure of changing it. Tuesday July 15 Beautiful cool day. Mother, May and Dorothy up to dinner. Flora & Clarence came to supper and then started to see Pains Pompeii. Edna & Clarence made us a call this Eve. Baby has been exceptionaly good today. He is just beginning to find out what his hands are for. Cant just make them mind yet he will look at a thing as though he wanted to take it and grunt and stretch his arms but cant take hold. It is comical to watch him. Wednesday July 16 Another beautiful day. Nothing unusual happened today that I know of. The officers have not cought Tracy out in Washington yet. I guess they are afraid of him. Put up strings tonight for the morning glories. Baby wiggled clear around twice laying on the floor tonight, he seems so strong for so young a baby. Thursday July 17 Hot today and storming tonight. Anna and Baby went down to Mothers this P.M. and staid to supper. Belle & children, Aunt Julia, May & children went there. They expected Bessie & Baby & the Perkinses but they did not come. The Carriers have their anual Moonlight Excursion tonight. Today promised a fine night but it is raining now and they must be having a sweet time. Friday July 18 Well it rained and thundered & linghteded all last night. And it has rained all day today, never did see the beat of it. The Carriers had a good crowd as they all got on the boat before it rained, but they came near being drowned out I guess after it did begin to rain. Aunt Cornelia called this moring. Inez & friend called this evening to admire the baby. Had the sub. Jacobi out with me this A.M. Saturday July 19 Well it rained all last night and all day today except short intervals. Went up to Geo. to supper. Anna went in the P.M. Mother & May was there to dinner, had a good visit. Geo.'s Anna seems to think so much of the baby and he was just as good as could be. I am to start my vacation Monday. They are setting up the new stamping machine at the Sta. today and I guess it is a hummer. I dont know what this Country is going to do if it dont stop raining. A man told me today that he saw boys in swimming in a corn field today. They would dive down off of a fence and bring up corn. Sunday July 20 Rained all last night and this morning but began to clear about 10 A.M. and the sun came out for the 1st time in 3 or 4 days. I went to go to church today, as I did not have to work, but I just was too lazy. Two hard wind and rain storms this P.M. Our cellar had 9 inches of water in it for a while but it ran right out again. Monday July 21 First day of my vacation and it rained this forenoon, for a change. The paper says that this June & July so far break all records for rain in the history of the weather office. Well I can believe that easy enough. Belle and Sam & family, and the Hopkins family started for Grand Point this morning. We saw them take the car out here in the rain. Dave came in to dinner today. I cleaned up the stove & water heater this A.M. and went down town this P.M. Bought a neg. shirt, night shirt, some King collar buttons at a sale, a bone ring for babie and Cal. Cherries for Anna. It is rather cool this Eve. Tuesday July 22 Did not rain today. Got a hair cut & shave. Got started for Northville on 3 P.M. car. The country is pretty well drowned out. Water standing in the fields, wheat not yet cut. Saw binders standing in the wheat where they had tried to cut but the ground was so soft they could not draw it. Wheat is growing in the head, even where it is standing. Corn is good on high places but backward for the time of season. Oats are heavy where they are not drowned , beans are poor, cannot be cultivated, potatoes are mostly rotting, some places the 3rd planting has rotted. Hay good enough but gets good and soaked before it can draw in. Got to Northville safe, went to see Dog show in Eve. Wednesday July 23 Rained P.M. Fooled around Merritts store A.M. P.M. called on Auntie. Had some soda water at Houstons, "good." Bought a pair of baby pins for babies 4 months old birthday. The country is nice but it is so wet that it makes it bad getting around. Thursday July 24 Rained like the old harry in the afternoon. I was in Laphams store at Plymouth when it rained the hardest. Anna, babie & I went down to Plymouth on the car. Uncle Asa had gone up to Ernies so we went back to Aunt Vinas and staid till after supper. Took a walk over my old play ground in P.M. Went into the old Cemetary and saw the graves of the Hardenburgs and of Victors [Victor Deforest Dean 1857-1858 was Bennett's brother], I did not remember that he was buried there. Friday July 25 Rained P.M. Went up to Ernies today by way of Plymouth & South Lyon. Ernie brought Uncle Asa & family up to the train & took me back. Farming is discouraging business this summer. I helped Ernie & Father get in 3 loads of hay, we just got the last load in the barn when it began to rain. I staid till after supper then Ernie & Anna took me as far as the R.R. and I walked to South Lyon, 8:58, made good conections at Plymouth and got to Northville about 10:30. Saturday July 26 Rained P.M. David, Frank Moore & Claud Burgess & I got a team & carriage of Perin and went fishing up above Walled Lake in lower straights. Left our horses at Kelhains farm but we only cought one fish after rowing all over the lake. So went back & got team and went to a little lake in the wood by Mud Lake. Caught about 30 in 1 1/2 hours, then started for home at 6 P.M. Got good and wet when it rained while we were in the wood. Got poisoned with poison sumach, but then we had the fun. Sunday July 27 Rained as usual. Had fish for breakfast. Laid around all day. Could not go anywhere my cloths were so wet and muddy. I hung them out to dry. Crops looked good up around Walled Lake. I guess it is just the season for that stand. Monday July 28 Rained P.M. Went up to Norines P.M., staid to supper. Took a walk over into Cabbage Town P.M., got cought in rain. Discovered I had been poisoned Sat. Stopped at Dr. Turners on way home and had him perscribed for me. Tuesday July 29 Did not rain today. Anna & Ernie called this A.M. but only for a few minutes. My poison kept me awake a good share of the night itching. Flora is on her vacation. We went and called on Grandma P.M., met Belle Shoemaker for the 1st time. Then we went up to Aunties, all the Clarkson family except old man & Dave was there, & Ted too. Had a buncomb supper. The girls made their Mother a present of a few wearing apparels. Wednesday July 30 Did not rain today. Mowed lawn and did a few things around. Got word here that Ed Hastings died last night suddenly in California. Anna & I & baby called on May on our way to the car. Got my watch at Teds and took the car for home, Mable came with us. Found everything OK but house seemed damp and musty. Thursday July 31 Rained just a little P.M. Went down and called on Mother. Miss McKay was there sewing. Baby is cross today, did not want to come home I guess. Anna does not feel well either. Sams folks say they enjoyed their stay at Grand Point, they came home Monday night. Delia & Mins little girl staid. Seems kind of good to get home but I did hate to leave the country and I hate to think of going to work. |

August 1902Friday August 1 No rain today. I hope the rain is letting up now. But maybe we will be complaining of the dry weather in a week. Took my wheel this morning and took a ride out around Belle Isle. The Island was so beautiful, everything so green and luxuriant. Called on Dr. Martin. Got my money at P.O., bought a brush & strop. Took in the ball game P.M., Detroit 15 & Washington 0. In the Eve. took the car to Belle Isle bridge and took in the sites around there.

Father came home too so we had a good family visit. Al Whitehead called this forenoon. He is working here now for the Detroit Creamery Co. Monday August 4 Beautiful day. Went to Dr. Martin and had my teeth cleaned. Went up to Mrs. Burns and paid the rent. Went from there over where Whitehead works and called on him. Went to the Ball game, Boston 6 Vs. Detroit 1. Saw the wonderful Sy Young pitch for the B. And this ends my vacation, I dread to go to work. I have enjoyed my vacation but some way do not feel just satisfied. Tuesday August 5 Well I went to work today and I feel it tonight. I am sore and lame. Found everything OK so far. Nothing unusual happened today that I know of. Mabel & Anna took a walk after supper with the baby in the buggie. I developed pictures last night but they were fogged and it must have been the lamp. The poisen on one hand seems worse tonight, my righ hand seems nearly well. Wednesday August 6 Cool today. Threatened rain but only sprinkled. Went to Dentist tonight but he did not get through. Thursday August 7 Cold, and a cold miserable rain today. My hands actually seem to get worse instead of better. My left wrist swelled and it is spreading on the palm and fingers. I tried alchohol & salt today and it seemed to help but you cannot keep it on. The baby gets stronger and cuter every day. He tries to raise himself up alone and he can nearly succeed. He can get his toe into his mouth to easy for anything. Anna said he rolled himself over twice on the floor and off of the blanket. Friday August 8 Fine day but it was cold enough this morning for an overcoat. Anna took a walk with the baby down to Mothers this P.M. Belle Shoemaker & Mother came tonight, they had been down town all day. Baby seems to have a little cold tonight. Saturday August 9 Fine day. Everybody went to Belle Isle today. Anna & baby, her mother, Mabel, Flora, the Shoemakers, Frank Moore & family. And they all came here for supper. Mrs Shoemaker & the Moors went home, the rest staid here. Sunday August 10 Fine day & warm. Well the crowd is pretty well done up today. The baby acted up last night with his cold and is not feeling well today. Anna has been sick all day and her Mother is sick. And my hands bother me so I am discouraged with them. It seems as fast as they get better in one place they break out in another. The girls went to church and I to work A.M. Dave & Clarence came in and they and Mabel & Flora went on the boat in P.M. Belles principle would not let her go. All but Mrs. Clarkson went home this Eve. We expected Aunt Ella & Grandpa [Nash] but they did not come. May & Herbert & baby [Dorothy] called, Eve. Monday August 11 Fine day, cool. Baby's cold is about the same, he coughs considerable but it does not seem tight. Anna and her Mother feel better today. My hands seem better today, I think camphor & salt kills it the quickest but it is hard to keep on. The front tire on my wheel blew up at noon and I had to walk home. I put on the other tire that I had. Senator McMillan died suddenly yesterday A.M. Harvey Radcliff died Friday or Saturday. Tuesday August 12 Fine day. Nothing unusual today. Katie, Bulah & Blanch called this Eve. I went to the Dentist tonight, but [he] had injured his eye, and could not see to work. Babies cold does not improve very fast. We feel worried about him but it dont seem as if it was serious. His throat rattles and he coughs and frets but he [is] bright and active, and no fever. My hands have taken a sudden turn for the better today and it makes me feel more cheerful. Wednesday August 13 Dark, cloudy, cold day. We are having regular fall weather. Babies cold is better tonight. I hope he sleeps better. He kept Anna up untill after midnight last night and we were pretty well frighteded, he rattled and wheezed so. Anna greased him well with lard & turpentine and finaly put a cold water compress on him, that seemed to relieve him. I feel one of my colds coming on today. I wish I could break it up but I guess my hands will be all right now. The skin is nearly ruined with medicine I used. Went down to Mothers tonight. Herbert & May have gone to Northville. Thursday August 14 Cloudy & cold. Got a bad cold. Babies cold seems better today. McLeods came late in the evening. Friday August 15 Cloudy but nice. My cold is no better today, I feel pretty bum. Babies cold seems a little worse today. Ted & Norine in to dinner. Saturday August 16 Rather cool. This has been certainly a remarkable summer, in fact it seems as though we had no summer. The coal question is bothering the City just now on account of the strike no coal is being mined and if the strike is not settled we will have no coal at any price. It is now only $7 a ton and going up every few days. F. C. Andrews was found guilty this P.M. I guess he deserves it but there are others that do too. I am nearly sick with my cold and baby is too and the whole family is on the bum. Sunday August 17 Beautiful day. Did not go to church. We walked down to Mothers P.M. and staid to supper. Edna & Mason brought Mrs. Clarkson home on the car. But Anna & I walked with the baby in the cart. Baby seems better with the cold but is crosser than the dickens tonight. My cold is much better today. Monday August 18 Very nice day. Did not feel so well today, was weak and shaky. Could not sleep last night. Rather warm today. Andrews was sentenced to 15 years. Baby better but has been cross. Andrews has a writ of error, I am afraid he will get clear. Wenesday August 20 Rained today. Went down to McGees at noon for butter & some other things. Anna & baby & Grandma went out to Yerkes today. Anna & baby came home tonight but her Mother went on home to Northville. Thursday August 21 Fine day. Ordered two ton of coal, $14.00, and fixed up the bin tonight. Wonder how the coal strike is coming out, the strikers seem to have the upper hand yet. Coal in N.Y. is $10.00 to $13.00 a ton and no coal at all is being shipped. I think there will be plenty of coal but I thought we may not get it in time for the first cold snap. Some coal dealers has no coal at all and the demand on those who did lay in a supply last spring is rapidly depleting the supply, and consequently raising the price. Friday August 22 Cool weather we are having. My cold bothers me a little yet, I cough quite a bit. Babies cold seems nearly gone. Father was up to dinner, he seemed to enjoy the baby. Sutherlands say they are going to move into the new house across the street and down to the other corner. Saturday August 23 Fine day but cool. Nothing doing. Anna gets awful tired these days. Went down town after supper and bought numerous things. I enjoy going down town and buying but I am usualy so tired that it takes the enjoyment all out of it. Sunday August 24 Beautiful day. Worked. Took a nap. Anna, baby & I went for a walk. Walked by Powell Terrace, dont think they are any great shucks [shacks?]. Stopped at McFarlanes for a few minutes. Edna & Mason called late in the evening. Monday August 25 Fine day. I do not feel well at all today. I dont know wheather it is my cold still hanging on or something else. Baby is crosser than sam hill too. Belle called. Saturday August 30 Fine day. Another week gone and Sept. is well nigh come. It does not seem possible that the summer is so near over, it seems as tho we have had no summer at all only one or two hot days and so much chilly weather. Herbert will start home Tuesday and I have hardly seen him. I was down to Mothers today, Herbert was there and it seems so good to have a family talk. I wish we all lived near so we could always be together. I paid my life insurance today, $57.40. That seems a lot of money to pay out and not see any benifit, but I suppose somebody will get the benifit someday. Belle Shoemaker was here to dinner today and started for home this P.M. Sunday August 31 Rather warm & cloudy, rained in the Eve. Did not work, or go to church. Herbert & May, Harold & Dorothy came up to supper. I made Ice Cream and it was good but did not keep very hard. |

September 1902Monday September 1 Beautiful day. They say they had the best parade today they ever had. I paraded around my route with about 50 lbs. of mail. Afternoon Herbert & family, Father, Mother & Edna, Roy, Miss Rockwell and I started for Bony [sic] Blanc but got left, and went to Belle Isle, ate lunch and come home about 9. Anna did not go, afraid to take the baby in the crowd. Tuesday September 2 Fine day. Took pictures of baby and developed them in Eve. Hear that Judge Durand is dying. It seems as tho if the Democrats grab a good man up, he dies. Wednesday September 3 Fine day. Rained late in the evening, high wind. Only one or two baby pictures turned out nice, something the matter. I am going to send my Kodak back to the factory for repairs. Went up and paid the rent. Met the engineer of the Pen. Stove Works or he was when I was there. Thursday September 4 Cold today, seems almost cold enough to snow. Carpenter fixing steps all around, yesterday & today. We are giving him Castoria every two hours and he seems easier after every dose. But he throws up his milk and does not sleep hardly any. Saturday September 6 Threatened rain all day but only sprinkled once or twice. Baby seems better today but he was awfull sick last night. Anna was up nearly all night and is nearly done up today. I think baby came near having inflamation of the bowels, he seemed in distress and limp and that sick whimper. I guess we ought to get the Dr. but we dont know just what to do, he seems to get better and [we] dont like to run for a Dr. unless it is necessary. Edna up P.M. Sunday September 7 Fine day, chilly in morning. Had a hard night last night, baby cried till 12 oclock but then slept till morning. He is pretty sick today, seems to have a cold and sick to his stomach. Worked. Mrs. McLeod & Helen called. Dr. Bell called, thought the baby was not seriously sick, that his bowls needed regulating. Monday September 8 Nice day but cold. Letter Carriers played ball with the Policemen again and got beat 16 to 15. Dr. Bell called again, said the baby was all right and a fine boy. I guess it did Anna more good than baby to have him call, as she was worrying so about the baby. I guess it is his teeth coming in. Tuesday September 9 Cold miserable rain this morning but cleared off quite decent the rest of the day, but it is cold and we have had a fire all day in the grate. Went to see some stoves for sale but did not purchase. Went out 10 minutes ahead of time this morning. Wednesday September 10 Nice day. Mother up to dinner. Flora in all day. Thursday September 11 Nice day. Bessie & baby & Bell called but I did not see her. Friday September 12 Well this has been one of those days you read about. It rained all night and all day today without a minutes let up, a cold miserable rain. Had to keep fire all day in the grate and a good fire in the baseburner would not feel bad. Baby fine and is getting so he rolls over and actually can creep or hitch himself along for a little ways after something he wants, 5 1/2 months old. Saturday September 13 Cold, it seems as though I would freeze. Went down town at noon to look at stoves, could not fine one that would suit for less than $9.00. Buchanan got home today. Did not go anywhere at night but staid at home and hugged the grate fire. Sunday September 14 Beautiful day but cold, quite a heavy frost last night. Went to church. Belle and Anna Minhart called. Walked up to McLeods, they were away but came before we got started home, staid to supper. Met Whitehead & his two youngest daughters as we were coming home. Baby as good as he can be for two or three days. Monday September 15 Beautiful day, but cold. The paper claims it froze ice in Ohio last night. Drilled tonight preparing for President Roosevelt visit. Tuesday September 16 Beautiful day. Went down town to look at stoves for Edna. Looked at Art Garland 16 in. $45, 14 in. $42. Cheaper ones 16 in. $36, 14 in. $33. Went down to the store and told Edna all I knew about stoves. Played ball at night, our alley beat the other alley 8 to 4. More fun than a box of Monkeys. Wednesday September 17 Beautiful day. Got a bill from Eastman Kodak Co. for repairs on [my] Kodak. I supposed they repaired free if you sent it to them. Got a card from Montjoy asking me to come after my pants & vest, didnt know I ordered any of him. Went down to drill but not enough showed up to drill so came home. Baby crosser than sam patch, he fell out of bed today, so I suppose he is no fool. Thursday September 18 Rain nearly all day. Edna came up to stay all night. Mother went out to Plymouth today, she intends going to the fair but I guess she would not go in the rain. Friday September 19 Well another rainy day, a most miserable day. Ted & Norine in to dinner. Edna came up to supper but went out to Miss Coverts to stay tonight and is going to Plymouth tomorrow night to stay untill Monday or Tuesday. Hair cut tonight, 5¢ worth of mixed. This is a fine day for the automobile races and fans, I guess that is what it is raining for. Saturday September 20 Well it cleared up today and we had a good day of it. We are delivering Peruna Advertisements these days. Went up to Sta. B opening tonight and went from there down town. Done a little trading, bought an umbrella, baby a pair of stockings Etc. and then went up to the Carriers Meeting. Buchanan read a very interesting report of the convention. Did not stay to the entertainment they had, but came home about 11 P.M. Sunday September 21 Beautiful day. Worked. Took a walk with Anna & Baby down to Mrs. Walkers & Aunt Dills. Met Francis Walker husband & Baby on our way home. Do not feel very well today, am weak and that tired feeling. And I am dreading the parade tomorrow in honor of our President. I suppose he is in town today but he has not called on me yet. Monday September 22 Fine day. This is the day the City turns out to honor the President, and they did it right royal good shape too. I hurried home from work in the A.M. and cleaned and brushed and got ready and went down to the Main Office at 2 oclock. They called the rolle then we marched and waited and marched till 7 oclock. I was ten times as tired as I would have been to worked. Saw the President as he drove by surrounded by Police and secret service men. It was dark when we marched by the reviewing stand. The crowds of people was a sight never to be forgotten. Tuesday September 23 Well if the parade had been this P.M. we would have had a fine time, as it has rained all the afternoon. I never was as tired in my life as I was last night and I feel 80 years old today. Hobson was here but I did not see him to know him. I think I saw Clara Barton but did not know her at the time. Wednesday September 24 Rain all day without a letup. And of course I got soaked both A.M. & P.M. Albert Radcliff died today very sudden, was taken sick on a street car and was taken to a Dr. but died before he could get home. Thursday September 25 Rained all forenoon. Did not rain P.M. but was not clear. State fair is having hard luck, 3 rainy days now. I wanted to go today but I would not go in the rain. My Bicycle broke down this morning when I jumped on it to go to work, the rear rim parted and the wheel crushed down. I had to make a sprint for the office. Mrs. Walker called to see about dressmaking for Anna. Friday September 26 Warm, did not rain today but was not very bright, heavy fog in Eve. Took my wheel to Berries to have a new rim. Took care of baby while Anna went to the dentist after I came from work. Edna & Mason came up this Eve. I think it was 4 weeks ago today that I got a tack in my front tire and it is there yet. Saturday September 27 Threatened rain all day but did not rain untill evening, but rained hard from 6:30 and is raining now, 9. Berrie did not get my wheel fixed today as he promised. Anna went down town after supper but it rained so that she only got her head scrubed and did not do any trading. Baby & I get along first rate. He does not miss his Mother till he gets hungry and is usualy as good as can be. Sunday September 28 Did not rain but was cold and dreary. Went to church, we would have taken the baby to be christened if it had been warm & nice. Mother came home to dinner with me. Auntie & Mabel were here when we got here and they had the baby dressed up in short cloths. Edna & Mason went to look at a farm 5 miles North of Pontiac. Mason has an idea he would like to farm it, but I am a thinking a year or two on a farm would cure him good and proper. Monday September 29 McClurken took my route today and tomorrow to pay for two days that I did not take on my last vacation. Went down town with Auntie to do some business in the new County Building. The first time I was ever in it and it is grand. I asked if my marriage license had ever been recored and found that it had. In the afternoon I tended baby and Anna, Auntie & Mabel went down town. Auntie went home this Eve. but Mabel staid. My Kodak came by express and it made me mad for I had sent postage for its return by mail and [I am] mad to pay 25¢ express. I wrote and asked them why they did it. Tuesday September 30 Rained all day. Went down town in P.M. in the rain. Bought Kodak film, soho paper, baby rattle, toning tray, paid gas bill, Etc. Went down to Ringes and got some molasses Etc. Called on Mother, she is thinking of going out to Ernies tomorrow. Ernie has a fever and is pretty bad I guess and Mother wants to help take care of him to see that he has good care. I feel as though I ought to go out and see him but of course I dislike to spare the time but I am in hopes he will get better. Father is out there helping with the work. |

October 1902Wednesday October 1 Cold morning, I wish we had a fire in the gas stove or grate but it is not very satisfactory. People are worrying about the coal supply, the strike is still on. Coal in some cities is selling for $18.00 a ton, the last I knew here it was $10.00. Went back to work, some changes took place. Hamming exchanged with Flowers, Doughtery with Collins, and a couple of 5 trippers were started. Got my wheel today. Mother called P.M., she did not go out to Ernies as she heard that Ernie was better. Thursday October 2 Cold and threatening. Went to pay Dr. Bell after work but he was not in. Anna & I went down to Mrs. Knabs this Eve. Anna bought a hat, $3.45. Then we walked over to Dr. Bells, the Dr. was out but we paid Mrs. Bell $4.00. Friday October 3 Cold and cloudy. President Roosevelt called the Coal Baron and Mitchell to Washington today to see what could be done about the strike. He told them what he thought of them. Received a letter from Dr. Bell today with $2.00 in it saying his wife had charged me too much, bully for him, he must be honest. Baby creeps all over now and stands up and we are afraid he will be bow legged, he certainly is a corker. Saturday October 4 Cold damp and bad day. Met Dr. Bell up on Stanley. Mrs. Walker here today. Mabel went home in P.M. Presidents conference failed. Sunday October 5 Cold rain all day. Two or three hard showers, I hope they are the clearing up showers, some thunder. The most wretched day imaginable, so dark some of the time it seemed like night. Worked. Sam, Belle & Elmer called. Monday October 6 Well for a wonder today has been a most beautiful day, an ideal fall day. Went to look at several stoves advertised, would not give a nickel for the lot. Went up on Gratiot to see a smoke burning stove 'Florence'. It did it all right but I think the most in it was the way it was run. Mrs. Walker here today. The whole country is agitated over the coal situation, nothing else in the papers. Tuesday October 7 When I got up this morning it had been raining and looked just like another dark gloomy and rainy day. And I was clean discouraged but lo and behold the sun came out and it has been a beautiful day. Bought a stove tonight of Tyre, $8.00. He delivered it right off and I set it up in the dining room tonight. Baby creeps all over and gets into mischief too. He hauls down books and tries hard to pull himself up onto his feet. I expect he will be walking soon. He is so cute and cunning now. Wednesday October 8 Another beautiful day. Built a fire in the new stove this morning, it burns most too fast and seems to be hard to control. They cut all below the R. R. on Trumbull & Lincoln off of my route today. Fixed my saddle tonight. The striking Miners refuse Roosevelts offer and I suppose coal will come up another notch. Coal sells in N. Y. City for 30¢ a pail, makes a ton worth that way $37.50, the gas Co is paying $22 & $25 a ton. Thursday October 9 Fine day, cold in morning. Took Milwaukee & Baltimore down to and including 2nd. Anna and baby went to Northville on 2:15 P.M. car. Came home from work and got supper then sat down by a red hot fire in the new stove, read a few minutes then went to sleep and slept till 10 oclock. Went to bed and slept till morning. Ought to have enough for one night. Friday October 10 Cold this morning, thermometer down to 39°. Had an enormous big load of sample copies of gazettes this morning and did not get in till 12 oclock. Came home, got something to eat, washed dishes and went right back to work. Edna telephoned that Ernie was in, so I went down there to supper. Ernie looks bad and is not strong. Edna & Clarence went up to Geo. to see about a farm, they have gone farm crazy. Saturday October 11 Fine day but threatening. Went down to Mothers to dinner. Ernie had gone over to Geo. so Mother & I ate alone. Paid the rent at night, staid at home Eve., too tired to go anywhere. Sent Dave his examination papers. Sunday October 12 Threatening in the morning but turned out to be a nice day. Went to church and went home with Mother to dinner. Mother & Ernie went down to McGees and I took car to Belle Isle Bridge and back on X town. Staid to supper and Eve. at Mothers. Mason talks all farm. Monday October 13 It blew and rained all last night but did not rain today to amount to anything. Anna & the baby came on the 12:45 car, I met them at 14th St. It seems good to have them home again. Tuesday October 14 Rained & blew last night and turned cold. We have a fire all day today and every moring & Eve. anyway. Ernie called this A.M. and expected to take the 1 oclock car for home. Wednesday October 15 Fine day. Went down to old voting place and got a transfer and then registered over here. Thursday October 16 Fine day but cold, we have to have a fire now most of the time. The papers claim the coal strike is settled. The President is to appoint 6 arbitrators and the men go to work pending a decision. Katie over this Eve. Tonight is the eclipse of the moon, we saw it about 2:30 but he eclipse was about half over then. Friday October 17 The thermometer was about 34 this morning but the sun came out and we had a lovely day. The leaves are falling now. Grass has been green the entire sunmer and looks green & thrifty now. Have to light the gas mornings now for a while. Baby creeps like a streak now and is getting more bumps than a train of cars. Voted today for nominations. Saturday October 18 Fine day. Rained last night. Went down town in the evening, bought a pair of Waldorf shoes but I did not like them very well. Their shoes seem to have good leather but are made bummy. Sunday October 19 Fine day. Father came up and invited us down to dinner. I went to work and went from there over to Mothers. Anna & Baby was there, we staid to dinner and afternoon. Father went back to the farm P.M. And Edna & Mason went out to see the Whipple Farm today. Monday October 20 Beautiful day. Nothing doing. Same old story. Tuesday October 21 Beautiful weather we are having now, cold mornings and evenings but our little stove keeps us just warm & cosy. Belle has a good deal to say about Katie and I dont believe she will stay long. I did not think she would stay long when she came and I guess she wont. Wednesday October 22 Today has been warm and smoky, looked like rain but I guess it was only fog and smoke, everybody is burning leaves. The leaves are falling fast these days and I suppose it will not be long before winter sets in for good. Anna & Baby & Belle went to find the washerwoman this P.M. and called on Mother on their way back. Anna says Aunt Julia tries so hard to see the baby and feels so bad because she cannot. I do not believe she can see much of anything. Thursday October 23 Beautiful day. Punctured the rear tire today, found a pin out of a safety pin sticking into it. Put a tube of giffy cement into it but it did not seem to quite stop it. Baby is 7 months old today. He creeps like a verteran and stands side anything. Has eaten just a little graham cracker, seems to have a mania for sucking a pealed apple, and can tell the diff. between one peeled and one not. Smacks his lips over sugar, and likes to stand in his buggy up to the table and make things lively for us while eating. His teeth are bothering him but none seem anywhere near through. he spits and drules and shudders and jumps in his sleep and has a good many symptoms. He loves to ride and loves to fuss while nursing and is a very busy baby for one of his age. Friday October 24 Beautiful day, very warm, about 80°. Boydells burned last night. Nothing going on worth mentioning. I hope this weather will keep for 2 or 3 Months. Saturday October 25 Fine day, looked like rain but did not make out. Did not go down town as I expected to in the Eve. Sunday October 26 Beautiful in the A.M. but blew and thundered and lightened and rained in the afternoon and Eve. Anna went to church this morning and I staid with the baby. We got along just fine, the baby was as good as could be. Anna had not been to church for about a year. Mother was there and said Edna was not well today. I took a couple of snap shots of the baby today but I am afraid they will not be good as I took them inside but with the sun shining in. Monday October 27 Nice day, threatened rain but it did not materialize. Of course we had a heavy mail today. Anna is trying to clean house these days but does not accomplish much. The baby requires most of her time. I fixed the gas stove burners to night put a rim around the top of them to hold the heat. I suppose our gas bills will be reduced one half now. I guess not. Tuesday October 28 Fine day "Nit". Turned cold at night and it did rain and hail some A.M. & P.M. Went down town at noon, paid gas and bought a printing outfit, $1.80 for type, 10¢ pad. Bought numerous things for house, granite ware and shoes for baby. Spent Eve. printing. Wednesday October29 Beautiful but cold, the water in the ditches was froze over when I went to work. Anna & baby went over to Geo. P.M., took a snap shot of them as they were ready to go. Spent the Eve. printing but I dont think my craze will last long. Jim Joy came with a barrel of apples, $2.00. Thursday October 30 Fine day, warm & windy. McPhee the sub went over my route with me. Sold $2.00 worth fo tickets to Farrand Organ. Anna, baby & Belle went and called on Tina Kerr P.M. Friday October 31 Rained last night and the morning seemed to promise a horrible day but it cleared into a beautiful day. Anna & baby went down to Mothers P.M. Developed pictures Eve. Went into the pantry to get a place dark enough but it did no good, I must have the light too near. |

November 1902Saturday November 1 Beautiful day. The mail is the heaviest I ever knew it. The fall election I guess is about the hottest one in a good while. I seem to think or maybe it is only hope that Durand, Maybury & Lucking will be elected. They are giving their opponents a run for their money, especially Corliss. I was too tired to go down town tonight. Sutherlands moved out, Osbands moved in this P.M. The Osbands has kept us busy getting water Etc for them. Sunday November 2 Rained a little last night. Everybody worked today. I have curtailed my route Friday & Saturday. I got up with a bad headache this morning and it lasted till I took a nap afternoon. Anna, baby and I took a walk, the baby does not feel just right now adays, must be his teeth, they are slow in coming through and he gets so many bumps too and has a mark on him somewhere all the time. Anna got a letter from Grandma C. [Clarkson] today. Monday November 3 Nice day. David came in today. Tuesday November 4 Rained a little today. Election today. Voted over here for 1st time, a great interest seems to be taken in this election. Father called. Wednesday November 5 Rained & rained this P.M. I got just soaking wet. Mabel came today, came in the rain. Dave is here yet looking for work but I guess he does not have much incouragement. Got Tilcombe to go for trunk 25¢. Thursday November 6 Nice day. Went down to Mothers and brought home a bushel of potatoes. Friday November 7 Fine day. Dave went home today. I guess he was a little sick and did not find work. Bought a couple of bushels of apples from a farmer that was stopping at Mrs. Sellicks on Trumbull, 40¢ @. Mother called. Saturday November 8 Beautiful day. We are certainly having a beautiful fall, and it is a fine thing for people that could not get any coal. We have kept comfortable with our little stove so far. Went down to Mothers at noon and put up curtains. Went down town in Eve. and bought baby a highchair and a couple of dishes. Went and watched them bowl for some time and came home. Sunday November 9 Beautiful. The rain & snow that the weather man perdicted did not materialize. I hope it will not come tomorrow. Worked today. Mrs. McLeod & children called. Geo. & wife came over in the Eve., we had a good visit, they seem to think so much of the baby. The baby went to sleep in Geo. arm. Monday November 10 Cold raw wind. Threatened rain or snow. Baby crawled upon the table at supper from his buggy. After he had done it once he kept at it and made for the vituals pretty lively. Tuesday November 11 Rained nearly all day but was warm. Went down town in the evening with Carr & Buchanan and played bowl. It was my first game and I am not very proud of the effort but I suppose I done pretty well. Wednesday November12 Warm day. I thought when I woke up this morning it had turned cold by the wind, but it has been most too warm today. I feel rather lame after my bowling experience. Anna just discovered the edge of a lower tooth in the babies mouth, 7:45 P.M. Belle, Roy & Elmer called this Eve. Thursday November 13 Still warm. Not much need of a fire these days. I build a fire in the morning but they let it go out and it is out till the next morning. Norine came in today and we had a pleasant game of Flinch in the Eve., Mable, Norine, Anna & I. Friday November 14 Warm today but the weather man says our warm weather is about over so I took him at his word and put up the baseburner after supper. Norine went to a concert with Mrs. Graham tonight. Saturday November 15 Cold and raw today. I built a fire in the baseburner this morning and it did not come amiss today. Norine & Mabel have gone to Wonderland with Mrs. Graham. I am pretty well tired out tonight as ususal and did not go down town. Sunday November 16 Did not go to church or anywhere else. Norine went home A.M. Monday November 17 Cloudy day. Mabel started to school this morning. Tuesday November 18 Cloudy day, not very cold nor very warm. Buchanan, Carr and I went down town and bowled 3 games. I came out high man twice and low once. My score was 95, 105, 87. I did a little better than the first time but I dont call that very good bowling. Somebody is moving into the house back of us and I guess they are moving nights. They were at work there when I came home from down town about 11 oclock. Wednesday November 19 So foggy this morning when I went to work that one could not see 1/2 block, the sun came out about 8:30 and the fog went up and we had a nice day. Nothing doing today to amount to anything. Thursday November 20 Another foggy morning, worse than yesterday, could not see across the street. But it turned out warm and pleasant. We have had no freezing weather at all, one could go without a fire and it is a good thing for those who have no coal. Only a car or two of coal has come in as yet. Anna went down to Browns this P.M. and had the babys picture taken. Just beginninng to feed the baby a little cracker and water. Friday November 21 Warm today almost hot. This has been a remarkable fall for the even temperature and the summer for the rain we had. The apple crop is in ....[..euse] hundreds of bushels going to waste in the country, but we city people have to pay from 25 to 60¢ a bushel. Potatoes are a poor crop, they are so badly rotten, about one half is waste, 50 to 65¢ a bushel. Got my hair cut tonight. Saturday November 22 It was raining this morning when I went to work but did not rain long. Anna & I went down to Mothers in the evening. Left the baby with Mabel. Father was home. Edna said she was to be married a week from thursday. We did not expect it soon. Sunday November 23 Kind of cold today. Worked. Took a nap in the afternoon, Anna & Mabel & Baby went for a walk. Anna and I went over and called on the Hardenburgs. Baby is very restless nights now, I suppose it is his teeth, one lower one is through and the other one coming through. He is 8 months old today. Monday November 24 Cloudy and threatening rain. We have not had a snow flake yet and up in my route at one place quite a bed of flowers are still in bloom. Tuesday November 25 Turning cold. Got a money order from Flora. Went down to the Cadillac bowling alley and played with Carr & Bucahanan and another Carr. Carr and I beat then we played a 6 handed game then another 4 handed game. Went down to Mothers at noon. Wednesday November 26 This has been one of those miserable days that make [me] sick of my job. Raining when I got up, then to snow, the first snow of the season, it fell a little all the A.M. Mabel went home this evening. I am very tired and somewhat lame from bowling. I guess the baby is cutting more teeth, he is so cros and so bad nights, he just about uses his Mother up nights. Thursday November 27 Thanksgiving again. The ground was covered with about 3 inches of wet sloppy snow this morning. It is gone somewhat this Eve. but it has turned cold tonight, 28° above. It was so nasty I did not ride my wheel to work and it was bad getting around. We went down to Mothers to dinner they expected Geo. but he did not come so Mother & Father and us & baby all together, Edna & Clarence went to his brothers to dinner. We came home about 5 P.M. & Anna went down to see Mrs. Walker to get her to come and make a skirt to wear to Ednas wedding next Thursday Eve. Friday November 28 Rather cold and cloudy. Took care of the baby at noon while Anna went down town shopping. I read tonight of a Walter J. Gregory being lost on Lake Erie Sunday night in a storm. The Steamer Silvanus J. Macy is supposed to have foundered with all on board. I wonder if he is the fellow I used to know at the Buhl Stamping Works, when he left there he went fireing and I came near going with him, I have not heard from him since. Saturday November 29 Well this is one of those days that makes me sick of my job. After I got out on my route it began to snow soft wet snow and it kept it up all the forenoon sloppy and wet and nasty. My feet was cold and soaking . I came home and changed all my outer garments, soaked my feet in hot water and started out in the P.M. dry and with rubber boots on but it did not snow in the P.M. The wind blew a jimmycane terrible weather on the lakes. Mrs. Walker here today making Anna a skirt. Sunday November 30 Today has been a lovely bright day but quite cold. I went to church this A.M. Mother was the only represeitive of the other Dean family. The Presbyterian Alliance man was there, I signed for $2.00 to be paid the 1st of Jan 1903. Anna, baby & I went for a little walk about 4 P.M. but the baby went right to sleep so we came back. The baby pulled the shears off of the machine just now, they came down point first just missed his head & stuck up in the floor. A few weeks ago Anna left him in his cart beside the table while she skipped upstairs. When she came back he had the carving knife in his mouth point first, so here are two narrow escapes he has had all ready for which we are thankful. |

December 1902Monday December 1 Nice day. Auntie & Mabel came last night. Auntie went down to Harts at noon but is here tonight. Mrs. Graham came up this Eve. and we all played Flinch. Tuesday December 2 A beautiful morning and forenoon but it rained like the old harry in the late afternoon & Eve. Edna & Clarence were up in the Eve. and we played Flinch till quite late. Father was over too, seems all day, pulling up storm doors. Mrs. Walker here 3/4 of the day. Wednesday December 3 Not a very nice day today. It rained a little all of the forenoon but was not so bad P.M. but it was cloudy & unpleasant. Went down to Clarks the tailor at noon to get my overcaot, that cost $1.15 for a new velvet collar & working over some of the button holes. Went up to Mrs. Burns and paid the rent after work. I am having a time with my stomach again, one of those funny colds coming on I guess. Thursday December 4 Cold and cloudy. This is Edna's wedding day. She did have one or two streaks of sun but they were very scarce. Anna & I went at the last minute, my laundry did not come. I had to go over on Grand River & buy a collar & cuffs, put on a soiled shirt and go. We were the last ones there except the minister, he came at the same time. Mr. & Mrs. Mason, sons & wives, Father & Mother, sons & wives, except Herbert & wife, & Lydia Joy was there. The ceremony took place just a minute or two before 8 P.M. Edna got lovely presents about $87 in money. Paige Chope sent a tray of silver spoons, knives & forks Etc. Friday December 5 Cold but a nice day, this is Clarences day and it was nicer than Edna's day. What sun Edna had came the latter part of the day, and Clarences came the earlier part. Anna & Mabel went to the church supper tonight. I staid at home and took care of the baby. I have a fearful cold and I had it last night for the wedding. I did not enjoy it very much. Saturday December 6 Fair day, up till Eve. then it rained & snowed nearly all night. Mrs. Rockwell here at noon. Mabel & Aunt Cornelia went to chruch, I went to work. Flora came and staid all day, she and Mabel took a trip down town to see the sights. My cold is much better. Anna & the baby came down with a cold last night and are feeling miserable today. The weather man says very cold tomorrow. I dread the cold and wish it was spring. Monday December 8 It was 18° above this morning. It seemed pretty cold. About 3 inches of snow on the ground. We are weighing our mail for a week now. The baby has a bad cold but that does not stop him from running from morning till night wiggling and twisting. He is the busiest baby you ever saw. He will come to me now if I call him and seems to know his name. Tuesday December 9 18° above this morning. Beautiful clear & cold weather. A little warmer at night, looks like snow. We are one of the fortunate ones to have coal, so many have not got any as yet. It is coming in the City all the time but not fast enough to supply the demand. The general price is now $8. I dont believe the Osbands next door has any stove at all, but the gas stove and the grate. I dont see how they can stand this weather. Mrs. Walker called for a minute this Eve. Mother called. Wednesday December 10 Warmer. It has tried hard to rain all day. This P.M. it has been misty, sloppy and nasty. It looks like more snow tonight. Got my front wheel tire fixed today. A tack has been in that tire since the 1st of Sept., 3 1/2 months. I just put on winter trousers yesterday. I have worn a heavy undershirt for 2 weeks. The baby is on a tare tonight and wont go to sleep. Thursday December 11 Not very cold. Tried to snow all day. Some snow, some rain and some sleet. Father called. Edna called. Cold still hangs on. It was the first time I had seen Edna since her marrieage, she looked just the same and we were so used to seeing Clarence there that that didnt seem any different so it was just as tho she wasnt married. Saturday December 13 18° above, bad. This has been one of those days you read about. The wind blew a gale all night and this A.M. about 8 it began to snow and we had about as hard a blizzard as we ever have in this part of the country. All the A.M. the street cars had hard times and walking was terrible but it is a beautiful night now. I have just been out and cleaned the walk. I was so tired I ate my supper then took a nap then went and cleaned the walk. Katie called this Eve. Sunday December 14 Cold, 10° above. We all got up with a sick headache this morning. I think it must have been the gas from the hot water heater. We were too sick to go to church. I did not go out of the house all day. Aunt Lizzie called, she and Uncle Asa were in but he did not come here. Monday December 15 Warmer and a bad day, misty almost rain. Nothing unusual. Tuesday December 16 Colder again. Bought a few things, shaving soap, film, Etc. Went and played 3 games bowling with Carr & Buchanan, did not run up any big score but done as well as the rest. Wednesday December 17 Warmer, nice day. Feel bummy today. Anna and I went down town and wandered around and into stores but did not see any thing that we wanted that we could aford to buy so came home. Feel disgusted the stores look just the same as every Christmas, one does not see but a very few new things. Thursday December 18 Beautiful sunny day today. Took a few pictures of the baby at noon. Friday December 19 Beautiful warm day. The coal question seems to grow worse instead of better. Saturday December 20 Warm damp rainy and muddy. Anna went down town. I did not go down at all. Went over on Grand River in the evening to buy meat and groceries. Sunday December 21 Very warm for this season of the year, damp and rainy. All worked today. Some packages in but not many. Baby kept us awake last night untill after 2 he just howled for some reason we know not what. Sat around the house all the afternoon. This I suppose is the shortest day, the street lamps were lit tonight at 5 oclock. They are put out about 6:30 or 6:40 A.M. Monday December 22 Pleasant day. I do hope it will stay so for Xmas. Tuesday December 23 Cloudy but pleasant. Mother & Father came up in the Eve. Father brought Howard a rocking horse. Father acts a little like a dotting Grandpa and it seems so strange in him. Mother had a rubber doll. We had a pleasant Eve. They are going out to Ernies for Xmas. I went down town today noon and [bought] Anna the book Virginian for Xmas. Wednesday December 24 Rather a nasty day today, snowing all day long. We had an awful big mail today. Bulah Texter tied today, she and her mother were out talking with me yesterday A.M. She was taken sick in the P.M. with Rhematism and it went to the heart and she died today about noon. She was about 5 or 6 years and the olny child and idol of their hearts, it will be a sad blow to them. Dave here on the scene tonight to spend Xmas, I suppose. Thursday December 25 I got up early this A.M., got over to the office at 6:30 and of course every thing was flooded. Took out just all I could carry, got home about one and found the house all fixed up Xmasy and the baby just enjoying himself, he was as good and cute as could be all day. Flora and Mrs. Clarkson came soon after I got home and then we had a circus giving each other the presents. Flora went home at night but Mrs. Clarkson staid. About 6 inches of snow and flakes fell all day. No tickets today. Friday December 26 Cold and clear today. I can ride my wheel first rate to work in the car track but it does not go very well outside. Another big load today. Geo. came over today at noon and brought the baby a box of blocks. Saturday December 27 Cold today, about 10° above this A.M. The mail was about normal today. This has been a fierce Christmas. For presents on my route T. Reynalds gave me a dollar, Randt gave me a bottle of wine, the Foster girls a handercheif, Eckert 3 or 4 cigars and J. Reynalds 3 cigars. Mrs. Clarkson went home today. Sunday December 28 Nice day. Worked, Christmas all over, except now and then a stray package. Took a few pictures of the baby. Anna & Mabel went to church. Belle & Sam called. Monday December 29 Storming A.M. almost rain. Cleared in the P.M. We have about 7 or 8 inches of snow now. I get awful tired traveling thro this snow. Developed pictures, I succeeded in developing them without fog but the pictures were not exposed long enough so were not very good. Tuesday December 30 Not very cold. Mostly cloudy but once in a while the [sun] will come out. Bought a chocolate pot and a mouse trap out Woodward today noon. We [are] being bothered by mice. Howard is getting so he wants to climb up on everything. He will pull himself up and stand on the first round of a chair then he can go no farthur. Wednesday December 31 Well the last day of 1902 is cold, 10° above zero and clear and bright, about 6 inches of snow well trod down and fine sleighing for the city. Rode my wheel to my route this P.M. Have been riding to the office right along. The coal situation is very bad. No hard coal to amount to anything, only old customers can get it and they can not only at times by the 1/2 or ton. Most people have to burn soft coal, some burn it in base burners. I have plenty so far. Called on Mother at noon. Mabel went home. |
