Wednesday January 14     Warming up, looks like more snow. Mrs. Walker called

Thursday January 15     Went down town at noon but came home to dinner. Warm, seems like rain.

Monday January 19     Cold this A.M. but nice day.

Tuesday January 20     Warmer, threatening snow. Do not feel first rate, my back feels numb between the shoulders. I think it must be my liver, I am taking pills. Went down and bowled 3 games but did not do very well, 121-111-116, Carr 154.

Wednesday January 21     Snowed a little last night, warm today. Father & Mother up to dinner. Still feel miserable.

Tuesday January 27     Just like spring this A.M. the snow is about gone. Rained a little P.M. Days are getting longer.

Wednesday January 28     Warm and sloppy is no name for it. The snow is about gone but the streets are so dirty and nasty one hates to go out. Took the car down town after work intending to come home that way but took a streak and went into Keenan & Jahns and bought my long hoped for writing desk.

Thursday January 29     So warm that one has the spring fever. My desk came up at noon and it is a dandy. I hope I will enjoy it as much as I have thought I would. I had a funny streak of luck, I found a quarter in the snow this A.M. up on 12 and found another this P.M. on the side walk on 12 farther up. I would like to find 50¢ every day but I would not like to be the one to lose them. Mabel to stay at Harts tonight and go home tomorrow night.

Friday January 30     A change to cold again. The wind blew a jimmy cane all night and day. Cold and raw, just flurry of snow. My back bothers yet. I got some dandylion tonight & am going to try that. Baby has another tooth today but is awfully cross tonight. Father called this P.M.

Saturday January 31     Very fine bright, cold day. Took dinner down town and did trading. Groceries at P. Smiths, paid N.W.L.&I. Co. share. Fearful headache all day. Anna asleep in her chair, baby asleep in his cart, I am at the desk writing. We are waiting for the Groceries I ordered. It is now 10:30.

February 1903

Sunday February 1     Warm & damp, rained a little. Did not get up in time to go to church. Staid at home all day, looked over receipts and papers, and fixed up the desk. Mabel came home in Eve.

Monday February 2     Warm this morning, it was so foggy I could not see the houses on either side of the street as I rode my wheel to work. Awful damp, high N.W. wind came up at noon. The sun shone at short intervals all the P.M. so the bear saw his shadow OK. The baby seems quite sick tonight, probably his teeth, his bowels are very loose and he cries with pain a good deal.

Tuesday February 3     Today has certainly been a corker. Snowed damp wet snow all A.M. and rained all P.M. getting cold tonight. The baby was worse today, he seemed so bad when I came home, I went and telephoned for Dr. Bell but when I came back he seemed so much better and brighter that he seemed like another baby. Anna had given him a dose of Castor oil and I guess that was all [he] needed. The Dr. came and thought he would be all OK now, said it was his teeth. Took the car down town and up Trumbull home tonight. Bought this book at Palridge & B., never got onto such a crowded car as the Trumbull car was. Today is Geo.s birthday, I suppose he must be 37. Father called today.

Wednesday February 4     Regular March day, soft & slushy A.M., high cold wind & colder tonight. Blizzards and storms all over country west. Baby better but cross. Paid rent, forgot to pay it last night. Over on G.R. tonight left my watch for main spring at the Bazaar. Father called.

Thursday February 5     Cold, windy. Anna washed, baby cross but getting better. Mabel offered position in Majestic Bl. Felt my regular cold coming on, took licorice corn, lemonade, soaked feet and went to bed.

Friday February 6     Beautiful bright day. My cold seemed a little better, took castor oil, ate oatmeal for dinner. Met Lenard Stringer this A.M. Anna, Mabel & baby called on Hopkins and went to see washer woman P.M.

Monday February 9     Beautiful day, warm & bright. Dont like the snow though. Mrs. Walker called Eve.

Tuesday February 10     Warm & bright, snow thawed very fast, fearful sloppy. Baby the best natured today he has been in a long time. Found 25¢.

Friday February 13     Spring weather, baby is just fine for a day or two, I hope it will last.

Saturday February 14     Fair day, looks like snow tonight. Big load of Valentines today. Baby put a spoonfull of sugar to his mouth today, the first time he ever did anything like that.

Sunday February 15     3 in. snow this morning, snowed all day and I guess it will snow all night. Went to church this A.M., nobody else of our family there. Baby took his first step alone today, Mabel holding him untill he was near his Mother then let him go and he would go the rest of the way alone. He is learning very fast now. Mrs. McLeod & Donald called.

Monday February 16     Cold today, 10° above and the snow made it a bad day, getting colder tonight. Terrible load today, hard to curtail. Baby seems quite sick, has pains and his bowls are out of wack, suppose it is his teeth. Mabel quit her job today.

Tuesday February 17     Very cold today, about 5° below but a clear bright winter day. Baby is better today but he worries us, he has passed a little blood that seems like phlegme. He talks and jumps in his sleep, dont have much if any fever, but at times seems so sick. About all we do is give him Castor oil to clear his bowels. Got a letter from Ernie & Anna. Mabel got a position with the Remington Typewriter Co., 28 Lafayette Av.

Wednesday February 18     Very cold, 3° below this A.M., came up to 6° above at 10 A.M. then went down again and was zero all P.M. and a very high N.W. wind made it just fearful to face. Baby better today. Inez Hart called.

Thursday February 19     2° below but got warmer, it is now 10 P.M. 16° above, no wind and a beautiful day.

Friday February 20     10° above, bright & beautiful. Called up Dr. Bell and asked some questions about baby. He has passed bloody mucous a few times but the Dr. thought it nothing to be alarmed about unless it continued too long. He tel. a perscription of powders. Went down to Mrs. Walkers for her Dr. book. Mrs. Clarkson came this P.M.

Saturday February 21     Blustering threatening day. Baby just fine, walked quite a bit, can go all right but seems afraid. [I am] awful tired and my back aches in a way that it worries me.

Wednesday February 25     Beautiful day. Edna & Clarence up in the Eve. Ted & Norine here to dinner.

Thursday February 26     Beautiful day. Belle gave a Pedro Party to the Hopkins & Deans, Masons. We got Howard to sleep and took him over but he did not stay asleep and was awake and wide eyed for the most of the Eve. I won the 1st prize, a thermometer and Mabel won the ladies prize, a picture.

Friday February 27     Miserable rainy day, bought a pair of rubbers on my way in from [my] route.

Saturday February 28     Another miserable rainy day, turning cold with a high wind at night. Mabel went home tonight.

March 1903

Sunday March 1     March came in with a high wind last night but otherwise not much like a roaring lion and it has been a nice clear cold day. I have not been out of the house but have enjoyed a very peaceful day. Anna, the baby & I have been all alone, except Mrs. Oulette & Mrs. Hearst called. I have been playing with Howard teaching him to walk etc. He will walk all right but wants to think some one has hold of him. He will point his finger at things he wants, especially the cracker jar. He is very fond of graham crackers. He waves his hand by by. Ask him to find his footie and he will push his dress back & say "eh". If his Mamma blows in the spoon he has to too. He eats most anything but meat, weighs 19#, is 26 1/2 inches high, and Anna concluded last night to wean him. He drank some milk in the night without bother and has not teased to nurse in 24 hours. We thought it best because Anna seems to suffer in a number of ways by nursing him. We think it will be a benifit to both.

Monday March 2     A most beautiful day. Howard just fine today. Weaning seems to agree with him, he has been no bother at all. But Anna is having a very uncomfortable time of it, she seems a little easier tonight. Dave appeared on the scene today looking for a job. Mabel got back last night, but got us no butter or eggs.

Tuesday March 3     Fine day, cloudy P.M. Dave got no work and went home tonight. Went up and paid rent. Howard walks of his own accord today. He seems a good deal better since weaning and has never teased or noticed in any way that we was weaning him. Anna very much better today, this is the 4th day for her. Mabel is counting her money, she is enjoying her earning.

Wednesday March 4     Nice A.M., rained P.M. Mother & Father called. Howard walks all over now and he is as busy as can be going from one room to another and from one thing to another. He looks as cute with his little hands held out in front of him waddling around and grinning, for it seems to please him immensley.

Thursday March 5     Threatening all day today but did not rain, quite warm. Anna does not feel so well today, she is so sore. She is using lard & camphor now.

Friday March 6     Threatening all day. Anna better, down to Mothers at noon. Ella Joy & Dorothy in. Edna & Ella called. Mrs. Graham called.

Saturday March 7     Spring rain, thunder & lighting, balmy breezes today, very warm. Ella Joy & Dorothy here to dinner. Anna & Mabel went down town in Eve. I staid with the baby.

Sunday March 8     Warm rain in A.M. but was beautiful warm & sunshine in P.M. Anna, Baby & Mabel walked down to Aunt Dills in the P.M. I took a nap, Inez called and put her card under the door [but] I did not hear her. Anna & Mabel went to church in the Eve. I took care of the baby at home.

Monday March 9     Nice day, seems to be blowing up a storm tonight. Belle, Roy & Elmer called. Howard cross today, he has 5 teeth now. I have had the toothache all day. I suppose I will have to have it tended to.

Tuesday March 10     A nasty rainy day, this is a funny March, so much rain and warm weather. Found 7¢ today. Let my good luck continue.

Wednesday March 11     Cloudy & threatening and I have been suffering today with the Grippe. And Howard is suffering from more teeth. He is crosser than sam patch. Saw my 1st robin today.

Thursday March 12     Fair day. I was sick all last night, but am better today. Anna & Mabel have gone to see Superba at the Lyceum and I am alone with the baby.

Friday March 13     Very warm and spring like. Father called and bought bread & cookies. Got my hear cut.

Saturday March 14     Fine day. Anna, Mabel & baby took the 4 oclock for Northville this P.M. I went down town in the Eve. to the Bank, bought rubber collar, window brush, nail cutter, etc.

Sunday March 15     Fine day. Got my breakfast, washed the dishes, shaved but was too late for church. Went to Mothers for dinner. The folks came home at 7 oclock and had a fine time, Howard was good and cute as could be all the time he was there.

Monday March 16     Warm and rainy, we are having a good deal of foggy, misty weather this month, is very warm for March but still the sun hardly ever shines. The P.O. went back to local time yesterday, the gold filling came out to my front tooth today.

Tuesday March 17     Foggy and a little rain this A.M. but the sun came out and it is a beautiful spring day, Ther. 68°. I did not light the gas this A.M. to get breakfast. When I went to work the robins were singing and the frogs were piping, the lawns are quite green and it does seem as though we had spring but I presume we will have some more winter yet. Howard is out on the back steps enjoying himself. He does so love to be out doors.

Wednesday March 18     Foggy this A.M. we have fog and a little rain every morning, but today has been a beautiful day, so warm that people were sitting out on their steps. I took off my knit jacket and put on my summer coat then I perspired freely. The back door is open yet, 9 P.M., the Ther. is 66° now.

Thursday March 19     Another summer day, the ther. stood at 78° at noon, the warmest day in 33 years so the papers say. Washed the windows and raked the yard. Mother up to dinner, met Father up at Radclifts.

Friday March 20     Beautiful day, warm rain this P.M. The grass is as green and fresh and I notice that some shrubs are budding, and it seems for all the world like May. The weather man says it is going to get cold tonight, but it has not started in very fierce as it seems as warm as ever.

Saturday March 21     Well it did get colder and was about 32 this A.M. but a fine day. Met Mother & Flora Fitzgerald up on Milwaukee Av. Anna & Mabel went down town as soon as I got home from [work] and I went as soon as they got home.

Sunday March 22     Fine cold day. I went to work, Anna left the baby with Mabel and she went to church. Mother and Flora Fitzgerald & Lydia Joy called. As they were leaving we saw Mrs. Kenny, her sister Nettie & baby & Lenard across the St. at Miss O'Briens, they came over for a minute.

Monday March 23     A rainy damp day and now at 9:30 it is storming, the rain & wind beating against the window at a terrible rate. Howard is one year old today. [He] is 27 inches high, weighs 18 3/4 lbs. He is as lively as a cricket, runs & walks and cuts up and is as cute as can be. I was going to take his picture today but it was too dark.

Tuesday March 24     Well this is March enough for anyone. Cold and a fearful high wind. Burns was up today with a new gold mine scheme. He is going to start a company of his own now.

Wednesday March 25     Warmer and more pleasant. Nothing unusual going on today. I have started in to read the Life of Queen Victoria. David Clarkson called this Eve.

Thursday March 26     Beautiful day today, warmer. Anna & Howard down to Mothers P.M. Mabel rode home from work in carriage with Dr. & Mrs. [blank]. Down town & paid gas, at McGee's, etc.

Friday March 27     Damp rainy day, cold & very disagreeable.

Saturday March 28     Beautiful day. Well I am 35 years old today. I suppose I have lived half of my promised life. They say it takes 1/2 of your life to know how to live the other half, I hope I will do better the other half. I really feel younger than at 20 and am happier. I have a good home, nice wife & fine 1 year old boy. I am entirely out of debt. and my assets all told would probably foot up to $1000, including furniture, bank account, investments, etc. I do not own any real estate and do not intend to till I can pay for it. I enjoy the best of health, work every day, do not smoke, chew swear or drink entoxicating liquors. I have set out now to save $3000 in ten years. I will have to be very careful and keep my nose to the grind stone to do it. I am a letter Carrier in the service of the U.S. with a salary of $1000 a year.

Sunday March 29     Beautiful bright cool day. Went to church in A.M., up to Geo. in P.M. My bad tooth bothers me so I do not enjoy life any too well. Mabel came home in Eve.

Monday March 30     Beautiful day. Father came here for dinner, he is helping Dr. Knapp move in over here on Forest. Howard seemed much better today of his teeth ails. Anna is giving him rhubarb syrup. He is so cute and funny when he feels good, into all kinds of mischief. He tries to talk a good deal, has a word he keeps saying, sounds like "dideu", he at first said "dobeu". Ask him to say papa and he will say "dideu" once in a while he will try and say "papa". He points his finger and says "dideu".

Tuesday March 31     Another beautiful warm day. Anna & Howard & Belle went down to Lews & to Perkins P.M. Dave up in evening.

April 1903

Wednesday April 1     Well this is a fine all fools day, but looks like rain this Eve. Father here to dinner today. I like to see him with Howard, he seems to think so much of him. Howard can get up alone now and walk when he has been sitting on the floor. Anna missed him the other day and finally found him up stairs in Mabels room with a grin right straight across his face.

Thursday April 2     Regular spring rain all A.M. Thundered, hailed and rained. P.M. was perfectly beautiful, so warm we had doors & windows open.

Friday April 3     Well this has been different again. It started to rain this morning, then turned to sleet, then snow and it has snowed every minute since and it was freezing cold. The wind blew and it has been about as horrible an April day as one could imagine. I feel rhumaticy tonight, not much snow on the ground as it is nothing but slush.

Saturday April 4     Cold, 26° above, about 3 inches of snow, every thing froze up. Cold north wind blowing, sun came out bright but still it seemed cold, just like a January day. The mails are terrific on account of spring election. Anna & I went down town after supper did some trading, then Anna came home and I went to the Carriers meeting.

Sunday April 5     Cold, 30° above, but a clear bright day. Worked, awful big mail. Feel tired today and am taking it easy this P.M. Auntie T came in P.M. Mrs. Graham came to supper.

Tuesday April 14     Another miserable rainy day. It has rained just a fine misty rain without a minute let up all day. It has rained for 4 days almost incessantly and it makes one feel miserable and rheumatcy. Howard has had his 6th tooth for about a week now.

Wednesday April 15     Does not rain this A.M. but it might as well, it is so damp & cloudy. I thought we would get through with out buying any more coal but I had to get another 1/2 ton today. Dueq [sic] caught stealing yesterday morning.

[Grandma Sarah Ann Bradley Clarkson was the dau. of Harvey Stone Bradley & Maria Rose. She was born. 20 Jun 1822 at Bloomfield, Ontario Co., NY. She was about 8 years old when her family settled in Plymouth, MI. On Jan. 3, 1844 she married David Clarkson. They had 8 children]

Tuesday October 27     Below freezing this A.M. but is clear and fine. Anna & Howard, Flo & Mabel went to the Depot this morning to see Grandpa Nash & Auntie off for California. Reported 15 minutes later this A.M. Dr. & Carrie in time for supper. The Fowler family came up and spent the eve.

Wednesday October 28     Fine day. Aunt Helen came in this A.M. She and the Armstrongs went to Grahams for dinner, all here for supper.

Thursday October 29     Beautiful day. The Armstrongs got away for California this morning and thier visit talked about for years has come and gone. Aunt Helen staid here today, she went back to Northville this P.M.

Saturday October 31     Warmer, beautiful. Flo & Mabel went home. I went over on Grand River after supper and bought a few Articles.

November 1903

Sunday November 1     Well today is very warm and fine, a little cloudy & threatening, the thermometer stood above 70° at noon. Anna went to church, I staid at home with the baby. Flora came back to work. Elver Hardenburgh has Scarletina, but no card is up. Roy is down to EdnaÕs.

Monday November 2     Foggy morning but beautiful day. Sent a letter to the Opera for tickets for Rip Van Winkle, they came this P.M. OK.

Tuesday November 3     Foggy morning, beautiful day, warm enough for summer cloths.

Wednesday November 4     Still as warm as summer.

Thursday November 5     Turning cold. Anna, Aunt Helen & I went to see Joseph Jefferson in Rip Van Winkle this evening. We enjoyed it ever so much but Jefferson is all there is to it. Down to the gold office this noon. Uniform cap, brown derby.

Friday November 6     Very cold, some snow last night and threatening all day, streets sloppy. Aunt Helen is here and the girls are making fudge with butter nut meats in. Sub. Pardee called with some shoes he wanted me to buy if I could wear them.

Saturday November 7     Cold but very fine. Aunt Helen started for St. Louis this A.M., she is to stay there a day or two with her son Roy [Shomaker], then go home. Mabel went home. Flora and Anna went down town in evening, I staid with Howard. Moved into the middle room tonight.

Sunday November 8     Warmer, beautiful. Worked today. Had all I could do to get mail up then had all I could do to wait on the callers. Mother & Father came in yesterday but staid at Ednas. Called here this A.M. then went to Geo. to dinner, they came back here and staid all night.

Monday November 9     Beautiful day. Mother and Father went home this P.M. Went up to Tuckers to order coal this eve. He is taking orders for Zacharias.

Wednesday November 11     Well today is different again, rain all day but warm. My back is bothering me again. I am afraid it is going to all winter.

Thursday November 12     Well it seems more like winter today, a strong wind and growing cold. Dick Peters little girl is very bad with scarlet fever, she was taken to Grace Hospital today. Last night we were asking Howard to point to different articles in the room, and were surprised to find how many things he knew when we spoke thier name, stove, glass, mammas pin, and nearly everything we mentioned he would point to.

Friday November 13     Cold and fair. Dr. John N. Bell & Dr. G. W. Wagner came this morning and performed the operation of circumcision on Howard. The Dr. advised it and from all I have heard I thought it best. I feel as though I wanted the boy to get started on the life journey right. Then I would not have to ever feel as tho I had not done my part. He stood the operation all right, the chloroform did not make him sick, but he was very quiet all day and very sore. Would break out crying every once in a while. I was not here, Anna & Flora were.

Saturday November 14     Cold but beautiful. Howard slept well last night and seems all right today. Dr. Bell came and said he was OK. Edna called. Bowled a couple of games with Buchanan after work. Sure changed to 7:05 Inspection today.

Sunday November 15     Beautiful day. Flora worked. Howard seems more sore today than yesterday but plays around and does not mint it much. Did not work today or go to church, staid home so as to amuse the baby while Anna worked.

Monday November 16     Rain today, turning cold at night. Howard getting along fine.

Tuesday November 17     Cold, and still getting colder, cloudy. Took down screen doors at noon, put up small stove pipe and several other small jobs.

Wednesday November 18     Very cold, down to 15° above, a little snow, cold wind and everybody froze stiff. Here we are shut in the dining room, everybody sewing, Howard helping, and it seems like the dead of winter.

Thursday November 19     Still very cold, the 1st cold snap freezes everybody up. Anna got a postal from Carrie today, they have arrived home all safe and sound. Howard is almost well, just now he is up in his chair at the table wiggling and twisting and reaching and demanding attention. Anna is sewing on Howards coat, Mabel is sewing, Flora is out in the kitchen ironing, I am writing, we have a splendid hot fire, the parlor door is shut and we are as snug as a bug in a rug.

Friday November 20     Cold, about 18° but clear and beautiful. Anna and the girls gone to the Drt. Opera House to see "A Country Girl." I staid with Howard, he made no fuss at all. He says "down" now when he wants to get up. He says "gone gone" he hides something in his hands and says "gone gone" then opens them and says "there see." and he says "pee pee" but we do not want him to say that, we want him to ask for the chair, but one day he came to Mamma and said "pee pee" that was the first we knew he could say it or that he knew what it meant.

Saturday November 21     Warmer but not so pleasant. Howard sick, teeth I suppose, sick to his stomach all last night and today. Both girls home.

Sunday November 22     The ground was covered with about 3 inches of wet snow this morning. Howard quite sick all night. Anna up and down all night. I got up about 7 got my breakfast went out and cleaned the walk for the 1st time this year, then walked to work, came home the same way. Howard very sick, cannot keep anything, even water, on his stomach, must be his stomach teeth. Girls came home about 8.

Monday November 23     Warm, cloudy, very sloppy, snow gone by night. Howard a great deal better today. Carr and I went down town this eve. and bowled 3 games.

Tuesday November 24     Colder, cloudy. Do not feel very well, my stomach is out of order. Got a letter from Mother.

Wednesday November 25     Cold and cloudy. Went down town after work and paid gas, bought film and figs, nuts, dates and several things. The girls went home tonight to spend Thanksgiving at home.

Thursday November 26     Cold, clear and beautiful. Worked hard this forenoon. We did not have turkey for dinner, too high in price, 22¢ lb. but we had some nice things to eat such as roast beef & gravy, cranberries, squash, tea, etc., nuts, dates, figs, grapes, cake, apple pie. I spent the P.M. playing with Howard, no body here but Anna, Howard & I, very quiet but I enjoyed it. The girls came home in the evening.

Friday November 27     Cold gray windy day, we are having pretty solid winter weather for this time of the year.

Saturday November 28     Cold and damp, threatening snow, a little fell in the evening. The ther. has been down as low as 14° above and has scarsely been above 20° for a week. The paper last Eve. said good skating at Palmer Park, ice 3 inches thick. I saw a number of boys with their skates today. I am afraid our 3 tons of coal will not last through. Went over on Grand River this eve. and got my Watch, 75¢, it has been at Harkness Bazaar for about 4 weeks being regulated.

Sunday November 29     Warmer, feathery snow fell all day (2 inches). Went to Northville on the 11 A.M. car and spent the day with Father & Mother. Talked house building on the acre of land they bought of Uncle Asa at Plymouth. Mr. Elys little baby was burned to death Friday. Came home on the 5:30 car. Flora & Mabel did not go home today.

Monday November 30     Cold gray day. Flora & Mabel did not come home to supper.

December 1903

Tuesday December 1     Cold gray day, about 2 1/2 inches of snow, ther. about 20°. I guess winter has really set in this early, if it has it will be a long winter. I went down town at noon, paid $30.00 on my N. N. Life Insurance at the office, 1116 C. of C. Bld. and paid Dr. Bell $15.00 for Howards operation. Did not come home at noon, took lunch. Went down town in eve. with Buchanan & Taylor and bowled.

Wednesday December 2     A little warmer and more pleasant but still looks like snow. Roy Hardenbugh has come down with Scarlet fever. Elmer is just got over it. Roy staid down at Ednas while Elmer was sick but did not escape now Sam is down at Ednas and Roy is home sick. Peters little girl died today.

Thursday December 3     About 20°, this is one to those damp frosty mornings when everything is covered with gray whiskers and it seems colder than it really is. A Hannan Real Estate agent called on me today noon.

Friday December 4     Warmer this morning but more foggy and disagreeable, threatening snow more & more.

Saturday December 5     No snow yet only what is on the ground. Anna & Flora went down town in the evening to look at Christmas things. Mabel went home.

Sunday December 6     Warmer and pleasant. Flora worked. I worked. Anna, Howard and I went down to Ednas for a short call P.M. Sam is there while Roy is sick.

Monday December 7     Warmer but not very pleasant, we have not had scarcely any sunshine for a week or two, still threatens snow. Tried burning designs on wood today. Went down to the gold office after work. Bellville thinks he will not pay anymore as he is to hard up. The whole world is just now interested in the new mineral discovery "radium" and its wonderful properties.

Tuesday December 8     Warm but unpleasant. Barney Radamacher died yesterday. I gave a quarter toward giving him a decent christian burial, he drank up everything he had. He and his mother were in destitute circumstances.

Wednesday December 9     This has been the nearest to a pleasant day we have had in some time. Dick Peters little baby did today at the Harper Hospital, this is the 2nd child to die there with scarlet fever, 4 at home with it. The Carriers are getting up a subscription for him. The girls are very busy these evenings sewing & making christmas presents.

Thursday December 10     Warmer and threatening.

Friday December 11     Very cold wind all day. Mother Clarkson came in today. Seems as tho it is turning cold.

Saturday December 12     Warmer this morning, but a regular blizzard started in about 8 A.M. and continued all forenoon, then turned to rain. All the afternoon and evening it did not rain the snow off but made it slop and it was the worst day imaginable. But we were bound to go down town and buy Christmas goods. Mother C. not well enough to go. Mabel sick with a cold, came home. Anna went down and met me, we bought Howard a rocking chair at Grays. Then met Flora and went and got an oyster stew then spent the evening buying and seeing, came home tired out.

Sunday December 13     Turned very cold last night, it was only 10° above this A.M. but pleasant with sunshine. Anna and I went to Church, Flora to work, Mother C. and Mabel rather poorly. Very cold this evening.

Monday December 14     6° above when I went to bed and 6° above when I got up but the firemen say it was zero at 1A.M. Cold enough any way and pretty good sleighing. Burned on Ednas Christmas box eve., Mrs. C. went home.

Tuesday December 15     A little warmer, about 10° above. Howard put his hand through my napkin ring and I wondered how long he could do that. Any unusual sounds and up goes his hand with the 1st finger straight up, that is the way he listens.

Wednesday December 16     Warmer and a most beautiful winter day, sunshine, no wind and just cold enough. Howard has a cute way of hiding his face, or getting behind something, then he says "gone gone", then jumps out and pats his cheek as much as to say, here I am. Ask him where Howard is he always pats his cheek.

Thursday December 17     Mild but cloudy. Anna and I went to the Drt. Opera to see "The Light That Failed", not much of a play but the acting was fine so we enjoyed it. "Forbes Robertson" "Gertrude Elliott," we bought the book.

Friday December 18     Still mild but threatening snow. Howard sick, another tooth I guess. The girls did not come home to supper.

Saturday December 19     Warmer, about 40°. Began to rain about noon and rained lightly all afternoon and eve. Howard better today, hardly any Christmas stuff in the mail yet. Too tired and weather too bad and sloppy to go down town this eve. Lost 15 - 2¢ stamps today on my route.

Sunday December 20     Still warm, rain turned to snow and there is about 3 in. of sloppy snow this morning. Worked, big paper mail but no Christmas stuff to speak of. Came home and cleaned the walk, got ice off that has been on since last Sundays freeze. Flora worked, Mabel did not go home, they are all around the table fixing Christmas presents. Howard calls baskets & boxes "bockeney" we hear Bockeney quite often these days.

Monday December 21     Beautiful day, sunny & warm, thawed some. Lots of mail but not what I expected to see today. Howard has a cold and coughs considerable.

Tuesday December 22     Colder than yesterday but mild. Howard seems quite sick, cries as tho in pain, probably a tooth, stomach ache or some thing like that. Any way hope it is not his throat or scarlet fever of which there is so much and so severe this year.

Wednesday December 23     Beautiful day. Howard better. Down town after work, bought Anna box of stationary. Howard a red top. Anna & Mabel went down to Aunt Dills eve.

Thursday December 24     Raining when I went to work, drizzled all forenoon. Terrible load went out at 8:35, back at 1:10 P.M. only made the factories P.M. slippery and as bad as I ever new it to be. Just came home and ate my dinner in a hurry and went back again. Anna & Howard went out to Northville this P.M. for Xmas, we had our presents here today noon. I got a pair of slippers, tooth brush & handkerchiefs, it is fun to give Howard anything he seems so pleased and seems to appreciate it so much. Anna brought his little rocking chair down stairs and he began to smile and act pleased as soon as he saw it then hot down and walked around it and touching it daintily, then he sat down on the edge of it and then gradually drew himself back into it acting so pleased and cute. Took George's silver cup to him today, he is an awful fat boy. Went down to Ednas to take her the burned box filled with candy in the eve. She gave me a boy doll for Howard and something for Mother and Father. Took a box of candy over to Belles. I am all alone here tonight and my back aches like a boil. I think I will go to bed and store up a little energy for tomorrows big load of mail.

Friday December 25     Christmas day. Warm & pleasant forenoon, got windy cold and snowy in the evening. Came home from Northville with Anna & Howard it was so cold and windy. The car was crowded but we got a seat and was quite comfortable, the Artheys & Evereys were very much in evidence and carried on at a great rate. I got up early and got to work at 6 A.M., carried my mail out in two loads got through at 1:25 and caught the 2 oclock car for Northville. My Mother & Father, wife and son, Teddy & Sib, and the Clarkson family were there at Clarksons, we had a tree especially for Howard and he was very much pleased and happy over it.

Saturday December 26     Very cold, about zero. The mail was nearly as heavy this morning as yesterday, but it seems to have stopped coming in now. The streets and walks all over are almost impassable, kids can skate any where, up the street, along the walk and the fields are covered with ponds. Thursdays rain and Christmas freeze did the work, the streets look like a frozen river with wagon tracks in the center. Howard is making good time playing with his Christmas presents, especially his dollies, he has about 5 dolls now and he must have them all tucked under his arms when he goes to bed not one can be missing, but he got a boy doll from Auntie Edna Christmas and he seems to love that one best.

Sunday December 27     It was 10° above when I went to bed last night and 28 ° above when I got up but it seems to be getting cold again tonight. I did not have to work today and I have put in my best licks resting after the hard weeks work. Anna, Howard & I all alone today. We had plum pudding for dinner that Mr. Cudmore on my route gave me, he game some last year. The girls came back in the eve.

Monday December 28     Cold today but pleasant. Mail not very heavy today, a few packages. A terrible wreck happened on the Pere Marquette near Grand Rapids Saturday night, two passenger trains came together in a head on collision, 19 or 20 killed and 40 or 50 injured.

Tuesday December 29     More snow last night, we had a fierce blizzard for about an hour this A.M. Went down town after work paid gas, bought me a uniform plush cap, a couple of gas mantles.

Wednesday December 30     Very cold, about 4° above A.M. I am feeling as tho I was coming down with a heavy cold.

Thursday December 31     A little warmer today. Inez Hart here at supper. A most terrible theater fire occured in Chicago yesterday afternoon. Blue Beard was being played in the new theater Iroquoise. Fire broke out in the 2nd act, the asbestos curtain failed to come only half way down and did more harm than good as it created a draft that drew the flames out into the body of the theater thus saving the lives of the 500 actors but dooming the audience. Everybody tried to get out at once and the panic was terrible. People fought and trampled each other down, tramping the bodies into unrecognizable masses. Bodies were piled up in heaps and rows so packed in that it was said that rescuers had to use man force to extricate them. The papers say over 600 perished making it rank 3rd in theater horrors of the world. Mostly women & children as it was the afternoon matinee. This is the last day of the year 1903, the year goes out marred by the terrible horrors of the last few days, it seems terrible that such things happen and I suppose no one can appreciate such an horror that does not see it or lose some loved one in one. I am thankful I have never been in or near one, I cannot see how people can so lose control of themselves as to do as the people did in that theater fire, when if they had only went out in order scarcely any lives need have been lost, only those that were suffocated by gas which would have been few in comparison, but maybe if I had been there I would have lost my head too. I hope I may never be put to the test. Flo. & Mabel, Anna, Howard & I are here tonight, we do not intend to watch the old year out and the new year in. I think the old can get out and the new come in without our help. Flo brought home candy & oranges and Mabel dates and they are chewing away on that. Good night and happy new year.
