[Philip's Grave Marker at McNeil Cemetery in Ovid, NY says he d. 5 Aug 1830 aged 47 years, 7 months, 12 days. If correct that would mean that he was born 24 Dec 1782 however his son Abraham recorded Philip's birth as 17 Mar 1782 in his family Bible22. Philip's son David listed his father's birth as "England" on the 1880 Wayne Co., MI Census. It has been generally assumed (because of Philip's Dutch name, his marriage to a Dutch family and the baptisms of his children at the 1st Reformed Dutch Church) that he is likely a descendant of Matthew CLARKSON who came from England in the 17th century. If this is so, Philip was likely born in NY or perhaps NJ. Hopefully future documentation will clear this up.]

Philip was married on Nov. 22, 1813 to Sarah Powelson in Pluckemin/Somerville, Somerset Co., NJ by Pastor Hardenburgh.

Sarah was born on June 21, 1791, presumably in Somerset Co., NJ.

"The Sarah Powelson ancestry is clearly enough stated by Mr. John A. Powelson, of Pluckemin, in an article in the work on "The Van Doorn Family," p. 718. She was the daughter of Johannes Powelson and Harmpje Messler, first of near Harlingen, and then of near Pluckemin. Johannes was the son of Jacob Hendrick Powelson, first of Long Island and then of Somerset county. Jacob's father was, doubtless, a Hendrick, whose father was believed to be Nicholas, the emigrant, who arrived in 1657 from Ditmarsen, Holland. Of the Clarkson family we have no information. The Messler (originally Metzelaer) family descends from Jan Adamsen Metzelaer, of Worms, Germany, born in 1626, and the descent of Harmpje is fully traced on pp. 624 and 674 of "Joannes Nevius and His Descendants," published in 1900--EDITOR QUARTERLY". (Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1912, Vol. 1, p.158)

Philip and Sarah's first three children (Abraham, David and Isaac) were all baptised in the 1st Reformed Dutch Church of Raritan (Somerville), in Somerset County, New Jersey in 1815, 1817 and 1819. In each case, their father Philip Clarkson is listed as unbaptised. (Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Vol. 5, p.148)

The family moved from New Jersey to New York settling in Seneca County at Ovid about 1820/1821 (between 1819-Sept.1822). I do not know of any land records of Philip owining land in Seneca County.

Sarah Powelson Clarkson died March 12, 1824 in Ovid and was buried at McNeil Cemetery, Ovid, Seneca Co., NY

Philip married his second wife, Jane SEBRING, on December 25, 1824 at Ovid, Seneca Co., NY. Jane had been born on May 1, 1792 and was the daughter of Cornelius SEBRING.

Philip Clarkson died Augst 5, 1830 at Ovid. Jane Sebring Clarkson filed a petition for letters of Administration of the estate of Philip Clarkson on Sept. 30, 1830. She noted herself and 6 unnamed children in the petition. No guardianship records were filed.

Jane remarried to Garret VanDoren (in Reformed Church at Ovid/Lodi) on July 27, 1837. Garret's first wife Arian Sebring (daughter of John I & Mary Wintersteen Sebring) died June 28, 1833. [Jane and Arian are not sisters]

Jane Sebring Clarkson VanDoren died November 25, 1842 at Lodi, Seneca Co., NY and was buried beside Philip Clarkson at McNeil Cemetery.

1.2 David CLARKSON [s/o Philip CLARKSON & Sarah POWELSON]
David was born March 13th 1817 at Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey, the second son of Philip CLARKSON and Sarah Powelson and was baptized at the First Reformed Dutch Church of Somerville June 1st 1817. At the age of 3, David's father removed the family to Ovid, Seneca Co., New York where David's mother died March 12th 1824. David's father remarried December 25th 1824 to Jane Sebring. When David was 13 years old his father died.
In the Spring of the following year, 1831, David left his five siblings and step-mother and journeyed to Michigan with Capt. William Dunlap and party. William and Sarah Dunlap, having adopted David, took him along to raise and as an additional laborer to help clear the wilderness. They traveled across New York State to Buffalo on the Erie Canal aboard the canal boat "Shark" and across Lake Erie on the steam boat "New York" arriving at Detroit, a town then of about 2,000 inhabitants, May 18th 1831. William Dunlap settled on 160 acres where the town of Northville was yet to be built. In the decades to come, David labored at many jobs such as clearing land and building cabins and later houses, hauling goods by ox-team to and from Detroit, grinding grain at the local grist mill and farming. For the remainder of his life he resided in the community he helped to build and as a member of the State Pioneer Society would later write several historical sketches for the "Northville Record" telling of those early days in Northville and the Pioneers who settled there.

On the 3rd of January 1844 David was married to Sarah Ann Bradley (the daughter of Northville Pioneers Harvey Stone Bradley and Maria Rose).

Charles `Eugene' Clarkson was the first of eight children born to David and Sarah Ann Bradley Clarkson. He spent his childhood in Northville, Michigan where his father had settled a little over a dozen years before. On November 29, 1861, nearly one month shy of his 17th birthday, Eugene enlisted in Co. G of the 14th Michigan Infantry Volunteers commanded by Capt. J. J. Donnelly. His unit was mustered Feb. 13, 1862 at Ypsilanti and left Michigan on April 17 for Saint Louis, MO and soon joined Grant's army at Pittsburgh Landing, TN. The 14th participated in the Seige of Corinth, MS and when the Confederates evacuated that city, the Fourteenth formed a part of General Buell's army, in the famous race with the Confederate army, under General Bragg, to Louisville, KY It went no farther than Nashville where it was assigned to the First Brigade, Second Division of the Fourteenth Corp, seving in that Corp throughout the remainder of the war. Eugene contracted Malaria while camped at Camp Big Springs, MS in July of 1862. Hospitalized for Malaria and liver disease at Tuscumbia, AL in Aug. 1862 and again at General Hospital, Jackson, TN Sept-Nov of the same year. Honorably discharged as a Sergent at Detroit on January 11, 1865.

About May 1868 until February 1870 "visiting" in Chicago, IL (not on 1870 census in Mich. Could have been in IL or KS) During the summer of 1871 he boarded with future brother-in-law, Edward Hastings.

In 1878 C. E. bought lots 4 & 5 in Block 20 at Northville from his father David Clarkson.

From 1879-1880 Eugene was seeing a physician an average of twice a week to treat his `chronic hepatits'. Doctors said he was unable to perform continuous manual labor.

His invalid pension had been stopped by 1880, as the Govt. believed him cured. On June 25, 1880 C.E. prossocuted a claim to resume that pension due to malaria and liver problems contracted during the War.

In 1881, he claimed that he was `unable to follow his business as painter but a little while at a time". He said that he "considered his constituion permanently broken and [his] health being good at the time of his enlistment" he claimed that [he] incured his disease of the liver from exposure in the swamps of Mississippi in the summer of 1862.

On April 26, 1882 Eugene was examened by Physicians for the government and they reported "there are no symptoms of liver disease" and all appeared normal.

In 1882 C. E. and siblings Emma & Herbert sold their Northville lot 36 in Block 18 to Wesley W. Mills. [Was this a lot they inherited from thier father's estate?]

July 29, 1902 "...went up to Aunties [Eveline's paternal aunt Ella Nash], all the Clarkson family except the old man [C. Eugene Clarkson] & Dave was there..."

"Nov. 23, 1905...Mabel got a telephone from Northville today saying that her father [C.E.Clarkson] was sick and would probably have to be operated on right away."

June 18, 1907 "....we all went to Northville to spend my vacation....Gummie (Eveline Clarkson) just home from California had been cleaning and straightening up the old house. Mr. [C.E.] Clarkson had lived there alone for a 1 1/2 years and I guess had never done a bit of cleaning or I presume he had not changed his underwear, bed or anything, and the house was decorated with cobwebs and over run with rats and mice. The lawn was grown up with tall grass and the garden had not been planted and was all grass and weeds. And Mr. Clarkson was long whiskered, long haired and ragged. He never works but spends his pension for drink and as little for other necessaries as possible. ...we all staid there and helped to get it in shape. I mowed the lawn, cut the grass in the garden, fixed up the steps and kept busy the whole week.

Mar. 17, 1910 the gang [took] the 9 oclock train for Chicago and California. Anna's Mother and the Merritts all of Annas family "except her father and he does not count" are now gone and left her here alone in Michigan..."

May 1, 1916--"...Grandma [Eveline] Clarkson went to Northville today and she expects to stay there and make it her home at the old homestead. She has not made it her home there in several years, she has been back and forth [to] California but now that Mabel is gone she intends to stay there and make it her home. But the house is well nigh tumbled down. Grandpa [C. Eugene Clarkson] has never did a thing to keep it in repair and it will be nearly impossible to ever get it in shape again but Grandma hopes to get [it] in shape enough to live there."

He will stay here tonight and leave for Chicago tomorrow morning. He comes usually once a year but this is an extra visit on account of his having a few days extra vacation to pay him back for some over time he put in. He is an Ice Inspector in Chicago."

Herbert wrote the following letter which was published in Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1912, Vol. 1, p.158:
"My father, David Clarkson, was a son of Philip Clarkson, b. Mar. 17, 1782; d. Aug. 5, 1830. He seems to have lived in New Jersey at one time, as he married Sarah Powelson (dau. of Abraham Powelson and Lamache Messler) on Nov. 20, 1813, and they have four sons born at Pluckemin. Philip married, for his seconod wife, Jane Sebring, dau. of John I. Sebring. They had three children. I believe a Garret Van Doren, of Lodi, N.Y., married Ariana Sebring for his first, and Jane Sebring Clarkson for his second wife. I desire information concerning the ancestry of Sarah Powelson and Philip Clarkson. Who were the parents of Philip Clarkson? I believe he was a descendant of Matthew Clarkson of Colonial times.     L.H.C."
[The Sarah Powelson ancestry is clearly enough stated by Mr. 624 and 674 of "Joannes Nevius and His Descendants," published in 1900--EDITOR QUARTERLY].

October 5, 1913 "...Uncle Herbert Clarkson of Chicago came this morning on his way home from the east, he took a trip to New York, Niagara Falls and other places. He went partly to look up his ancestors. He said he went to the top of the tallest building in the world in New York City, the Woolworth Building, 54 stories and then some more up the steeple."

"Sunday September 22...when we got home at supper we found Gummie, Clarence and his Mother, "Cora Clarkson". She came here from Chicago to spend Sunday with her son and she is to take the train back to Chicago tonight"

1932 living at 1619 Morse Ave, Chicago, IL -- sent congratulations to grand-nephew, Bennett Joy Dean, regarding birth of his daughter Betty Joy.

Mabel's mother went to CA in 1905 for Norine's wedding. Mabel moved to Californin in 1906

Mar. 24, 1906 "...Mabel quit her position at the Remmington Typewriter Co. today, I suppose she will start for California in another week. The employees at the office presented her a pearl sun burst brooch with an opal setting."

Tuesday April 3, 1906 "...Every[one] astir early this morning. We had an early breakfast, I said good bye to Mabel and went to work. Anna left the children with Mrs. Burns and went with Mabel to the Depot. And Mabel left for California on the 7:45 A.M. Wabash for Chicago, then at 10 P.M. leaves Chicago over the Santa Fe. Howard felt pretty bad to have his Auntie go and was going to lock all of the doors so she couldn"t get out."

Aug. 1913 Came back to MI for a visit.

July 6, 1914 "...Anna got a letter from Mabel in California and she...got married to a man by the name of Geo. A. MacDonald. They were married June 27. We do not know him as he is someone that she has got acquainted with in California. Mabel is the last of the family to get married and everybody supposed she was going to remain an old maid."

Sept. 21, 1914 "...got a letter from Mabel who got married in Los Angeles, and went up in the mountains to live. It must be a grand sight to see but not much of a place to live. 10 miles from a town and 15 miles from a railroad. Her husband is an electrical engineer and has charge of a plant up there. Her mail goes to Bishop."

Thursday July 15, 1915 "...And we got sad news today from California. We got a telegram at 5:10 P.M. saying Mabel died this morning. No particulars yet, letter will explain. And it was like a thunder bolt from a clear sky. We just got a letter from her Monday and she was all right then except she said she was tired out. What could have happened we cannot imagine and I suppose we will have to wait a week for a letter to tell us what was the matter and by that time the funeral will be over. It just about put Anna out of business. We cannot realize it at all it does not seem possible that it can be true and prehaps it is best that we cannot realize it because she has always been a favorite with all of us and especially the children."

Wednesday July 21, 1915 "...Anna got a letter about Mabel's death from her Mother today. Mabel was taken violently sick about 11 A.M. Wednesday July 14 and in spite of all they could do for her she died the next Morning at 4 A.M. The Dr. said it was peretonitas. She was perfectly well that morning and was working in her garden but was taken so suddenly and violently she could not summon aid and was alone untill found by her husband when he came home to dinner. They lived up in the mountains from Bishop, Cal., her husband is an engineer in an electrical plant. She was taken to Los Angeles for burial and the funeral was to be Sat. or Sunday, the letter said tomorrow but the letter was not dated"

21. Philip's Grave Marker at McNeil Cemetery in Ovid, NY says he d. 5 Aug 1830 aged 47 years, 7 months, 12 days. If correct that would mean that he was born 24 Dec 1782 however his son Abraham recorded Philip's birth as 17 Mar 1782 in his family Bible. Hopefully future documentation will clear this up.
