The Old Lead Region Historical Society was formally founded in 2001 as a center for learning, discussion and research regarding the United States Lead Mines of the Upper Mississippi River, including northwestern Illinois and southwestern Wisconsin. The Society also exists as a center of learning and research for the various conflicts with native peoples, including the Winnebago War of 1827, and Black Hawk’s War of 1832. The society is governed by a constitution and by-laws, which the general membership approved in 2001. The Society existed informally since 1999.

The Society has numerous sub-committees, among them an interpretive arm that provides costumed interpretation of persons from the lead mining era, 1827-1840, for local historical societies, schools, churches, civic organizations, and at historical events.

Many of our members do not do interpretation, and are just interested in studying this segment of American History... or the "Red Bird Rising"...or Black Hawk's War...or other topics of special interest or importance.

The OLRHS acts as a repository and catalyst for learning, informed debate, and lively discussion.
