Welcome to the United States Lead Mines
of the Upper Mississippi!

The purpose of the Old Lead Region Historical Society shall be to bring together those people interested in history, and especially in the history of the United States Lead Mines (as defined by the Robert W. Chandler map of 1829), Wisconsin, Illinois and surrounding and pertinent area. The Society shall also endeavor to research, study, preserve and interpret the history of the Red Bird rising of 1827, and the Sauk War of 1832 (known popularly as "The Black Hawk War.")

From 1822-1832, the "Mineral District" or the "Lead Region" comprised a portion of northwestern Illinois and western Michigan Territory (present-day southwestern Wisconsin.) Subsequent treaties added to the District the lead deposits found in a portion of present-day eastern Iowa.

Here, "galena," or lead ore, was exhumed for many years
as a result of the great "Lead Rush of 1827."

Would you like to become a
"Twenty-sevener?"

Then grab a pick and gad and explore with us
the fascinating history of this frontier region!
