New Research on Wisconsin Forts!

A new manuscript is nearing completion: Forting Up! Citizen Forts and Stockades Built in Wisconsin During the Black Hawk War, 1832. Thanks to the contributions of Michael Thorson, and OLRHS members Larry Koschkee, Greg Carter and Richard Worthington, this body of work is the first academic study of the entire known collection of Wisconsin's Black Hawk War-era forts.

Using 1832-33 survey maps, participant accounts, and data coupled with modern topographical and GPS analysis, the location of most forts are described such that visitors today may view (or come close to viewing) these ancient fort sites.

Publication is expected in late 2006.
