Weapons and Gear

The guns and calibers used for the "1500" match are all pretty universal. First, the rules say that the barrel cannot exceed 6 inches. Most people use a revolver, but more and more are using a .45 caliber 1911 Government model. No magnums loads are permitted, so most wheel gun users shoot a .357 gun and use .38 rounds in them. I have seen a 9mm used, but with very low scores.
According to the rules, any caliber from .380 to .45 can be used, including 9mm, 10mm, and the .40 SW. By far, the most popular round is the .38 hollow based wadcutter. A close runner up is the .38 semi-wadcutter. The Smith & Wesson Model 586/686 and Model 66 are the dominant revolvers used. A variety of semi-autos are used.
In this course of fire, you can do a lot of things to the guns. The PPC gun, with a bull or slab sided barrel and an adjustable rib (sights) are put on the guns and extensive trigger jobs are also done. One more item you see a lot of is the Hogue Monogrips.
For the duty matches, you are pretty restricted on the things you can do to the guns. The barrel cannot exceed 4 inches, you can have a trigger job done and add adjustable sights like the BoMar Sights or any of the others out there. A front post sight can be installed in place of the ramp sight, but if you carry this gun at work, it does not allow for quick sight recognition under low light conditions. Be VERY CAUTIOUS about doing this to your carry gun! I would not do this myself and do not recommend it to anyone!!!
The holsters used are usually the open front speed holsters that are popular in Bianchi Cup and IPSC. There are several great manufacturers out there, and if you e-mail me, I'll give you the name of a great holster maker in Texas that will custom make you a leather holster for a lot less that the big boys will. And no, I don't get a piece of the action. He doesn't know I am including him in this sight. The reason we use the open front holsters is to prevent the sight black from being rubbed off each time we holster our weapon. Any holster can be used, it is just a matter of choice.
Other little goodies you may want include a good leather belt, speedloader/magazine pouches, at least 3 (4 is better) speed loaders or magazines, a tray for your ammo and to put the empties in, a hat, safety glasses (a must), and a sweat band. Safariland makes a great tray for this and speed loader blocks to set up your ammo for the speedloaders. Safariland Comp III speedloaders are the best, then the Comp II's. The old twist knob speedloaders will work, but the others are much nicer and work a lot faster. Another item that is almost needed and highly recommended is a sight smoker. Brownell's is one of many places that sell these smokers.
