History

How It All Began
Starting out as home study centers, with parents opening their homes to children in their beighbor-hood, PIO has consolidated all our programs into one building in East Palo Alto. As an organizaiton that embraces diversity, all our programs are open to all at risk youth. PIO was then established in 1991 by Mrs Apolonia Dee Grey 'Uhila (Executive Director & Founder) and her husband, Mr Senter 'Uhila.

In 1998 - 1999, our students were 90% Pacific Islander, 5% Hispanic and 5% African-American. The unique community youth center involves the whole family and reinforces the values of education, self-discipline, co-operation, good citizenship and family unity. Parents, volunteers and staff provide a supportive, supervised, culturally apporpirate environment for educational improvement and personal growth.

On the weekends, the Center virtually turns into a community center, where families come together for meetings, potlucks, lu'aus and celebrations. To the students and their families, Pacific Islander Outreach is a second home and safe haven where children can learn and grow.

Introduction to the Pacific Islands
Pacific Islands are extremely diverse. the ethnic grouping includes Melanisians, Micronesians, Oceanians and Polynesians. The boundaries between these cultures are not precise, and there is a great deal of overlap. For example, in all Pacific Island's cultures, family is tremendously treasured. Family defines an individual, and little can be done without the need for involvement of the family. Similarly, music, dance and the presentation of food plays a very important roles in celebrations, feasts and daily life.

Migration over to the United States began in 1960s, people from the islands of
Tonga, Fiji and Samoa were the most population Pacific Islanders in the State of California, Texas, Nevada and Washington. However, today most of this group is concentrated in the San Mateo County, San Francisco; California.
