"The Observance of Communion"
Pastor Arnold De Torres
Guest Speaker - Biņan Faith Christian Baptist Church
04/07/02

Main Text: 1 Corinthians11:17 – 34

The Lord’s Supper is one of the most meaningful time in the life of a Christian. It is a time of introspection, a spiritual refresher, wherein we should think of our unity/oneness with Christ.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church about how should they properly conduct the Lord’s Supper.

  1. The Prevailing Disorder at the Lord’s Table.- verse 17 – 21
  2. They were missing the blessings of the Lord’s Supper. There were heresies among them, not so much of doctrinal errors but rather self-willed divisions. Most of them were recent converts, still engaged in heathen practices. They over-indulged themselves with the food and drink without sharing or waiting for other partakers. The sharing of Christian love was gone and the Lord’s Supper has become a carnal practice.
  3. The Prescribed Order at the Lord’s Table
  • There are two extremes regarding this:
    1. Too little regard for the Lord’s Table.
    2. Over emphasis on it that it has become the center of worship.

The central activity is still on the Preaching of the Word.
    1. The Lord’s Table should not replace the preaching.
    2. The Lord’s Table is not a matter of choice but of Obedience.
    3. The Lord’s Table is also a matter of remembrance

IV, The Prerequisite of the Lord’s Table

  • We are to approach the Lord’s Table only with an attitude of humility. To learn to forgive and to ask for forgiveness.

    "The Marks of Spiritual Maturity"
    Pastor Crispin Velasco
Guest Speaker - Evangel Baptist Church
    04/14/02

    Main Text: 2 Samuel 24:8 - 25

The Study of the Old Testament is profitable for us since it brings us perseverance, encouragement and hope.. David was now old, although faithful, yet he is fallible. The sin of David was that he ordered a census having a wrong motive. He was trusting on men around him instead of the Lord.

Our Spiritual Maturity is never based on our physical age.

    1. Matured Conscience – maturity can be seen through David’s conscience. David did not rationalize the rebuke of his conscience but rather admitted to himself, "I have sinned."
He was sensitive to God’s righteous standards.
    2. Matured Mind – David let himself fall into the hands of the Lord rather than into the hands of men. David learned to accept the consequences of his actions.
In our wrong doings, whatever the consequence may be, we will reap pain. Amidst God’s discipline let us focus our eyes unto the Lord.
    3. Matured Attitude – verses 15, 17
David accepted his fault and asked God to bestow the punishment on him rather than on his people, "not they but I have done wrong.". David was willing to pay the cost.
    4. Matured Spirit – verse 25
  • David built an altar for the Lord and gave an offering of peace. David, as king, publicly bowed before God and showed a repentant spirit.
  • As godly adults we are to obey God and humble ourselves before Him.

Guest Speaker - Calamba Baptist Church
    04/28/02

    Main Text: Luke 24:36 – 40

As exampled in the book of Leviticus wherein sacrifices where required. So did the blood of Jesus was shed to cover our sins.

    (On Deceptive Teachings)
    Deacon Romeo Bien
    Chairman – Board of Deacons
    Vesper Service 04/28/02

    Main Text: 2 Corinthians 11:3 – 4

The apostle Paul warned the Corinthian Church against false preachers and sited the example of Eve and on how she was deceived by the serpent who studied her weakness, thus using these 3 strategies against her: (1 John 2:16

    1. The Lust of the Eyes
    2. The Lust of the Flesh
    3. The Pride of Life.

The Result when we are Deceived:

    1. We will be separated in the faith/doctrine or the tendency to backslide.
    2. We will be chastened by God.
    3. We will be used by the Enemy against God and His Word.

    How To Avoid Being Deceived:

    1. Read, Study God’s Word (Bible) – Acts 17:11
    2. Avoid companionship with the unbelievers as they may greatly influence us.
    3. Test the spirit. 1 John 4:1
    4. Pray – our defense against temptations. Matthew 26:41

    "Living Supernatural Lives" (Part 2)
    Pastor Arthur P. Ornias
    Senior Pastor
    May 5, 2002

    Main Text: Romans 12:10 – 15

    v. 11 "Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord."
    v. 12 "Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer."
    v. 13 "Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality."

Setting Andrew as an example of an ordinary man but has lived an extraordinary life with Jesus. We also become extraordinary people when we live according to the will of God.

3 Basic Principles we can learn:

    1. The Modifiers – v. 11
    1. v. 11a "Not slothful in business" – we are not to be lagging, or lazy in everything we do, most especially in doing ministry for God.
    2. V. 11b "fervent in spirit" – we must have an energetic, enthusiastic and excited dedication in our service to the Lord. Our opportunity to serve the Lord is NOW!
  • Serving the Lord is the central idea here that we may then live supernatural lives.
  • II. The Motivators – v. 12 The 3-Fold Motivators

    1. v. 12a "Rejoicing in hope" – Our hope lies in God’s promise that the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us unto the end. This hope is possessed by all believers. We must have a fixed heavenly focus in doing God’s work. "Looking unto Jesus", even in times of failures, trials, we are to be motivated in our hope.

      B. V. 12b "patient in our tribulation" – to be patient is to persevere, to stay or to live even under the pressures of life.
God did not promise a calm sea for us to travel, but He did promise to be with us, be for us, and that we will finish through.

      C. v. 12c "continuing instant in prayer" – as true children of God we have the privilege to come to Him to prayer anytime. We must keep our diligence in prayer.

    III. The Mandate – v. 13

    1. v. 13a "Distributing to the necessity of the saints" – saints here as referring to fellow believers in Christ, part of our service to God is to serve our fellow brethren.
    2. V. 13b "Given to hospitality" – not only to fellow saints but also to strangers, sharing to them the kindness and love of God, giving to their needs and praying for them.

Mother… An Example Of A Supernatural Life
    Pastor Arthur P. Ornias
    Senior Pastor
    May 12, 2002

    Main Text: Titus 2:1 – 10

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
    That the aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

How do mothers exemplify a supernatural life?
    Spiritual Mentoring at the Home:

    1. Discipline at the home – v. 3 that the older women teaching by example to the younger women or younger wives, how to behave and to conduct themselves, to love their own families, to produce happy homes. All of these as part of their service to God.
    2. Discipling the family – Christian discipleship starts at home.
    3. Description – v. 5
  • "To be discreet" – putting temper or anger under control. Our reaction to everyday situations become the gage of our maturity. Being calm gives us room to think or reflect upon our whole situations.

"chaste" – the mother is to be pure in morality; focus of one’s attention, admiration and affection should be upon the husband alone.

"keepers at home" – mothers are the custodian of the home, taking good care of the appearance of the home, making sure of a secured, clean and presentable home. All these as part of their ministry.

"good" – goodness (physical) keeping one’s self desirable to the husband.

"obedient to their own husbands" – to be conformed, to submit. Wives ought to obey their husbands when it is right for them both and when it is for the good of the family. The father’s leadership should also be shared to the women regarding disciplining of the children.

  • Mothers ought to be examples of a supernatural life "that the Word of God be not blasphemed" (v. 5)

Living A Supernatural Life (part 3)
    Pastor Arthur P. Ornias
    Senior Pastor
    May 19, 2002

    Main Text: John 15:1 – 8

    1. A Christ-Centered Life - The center of our lives should not be the "Self". We should firstly pray to know how to live that Christ-Centered life.
    1. Doctrine of the Teaching - We ought to distinguish two extremes in our lives:
    1. Christ Over Our Ego
    2. Christ-centric life – is to live in Him, by Him, yield ourselves unto Him, letting the Spirit of God flow through us, letting His purpose carried out for our lives.

Egocentric life – the "me, myself and I"

But we are to set ourselves aside in order that our "union with Christ" be real in our lives. We are to actively show Christ in our lives in thoughts, words and deeds.

Verse 5 emphasizes on the connection between Him, as the "Vine" and us as the "branches". All our strength, energy, resources come from the Vine. We need to acknowledge this fact in our lives. Christ should be over everything about us.

    3. Christ Over Our Jobs
  • Christ-centric life vs. Job-centered life – Matthew 6:33
God desires that we have an abundant life. But are we already building our lives around our job schedules? If we do not abide, verse 6 tells us that we will "wither, gathered, and cast into the fire."
    1. Duty We Must Treasure:
    1. Only when we abide we become Fruitful
    2. Only when we stay in Christ we become Faithful followers of Christ.

II. A Bible-Anchored Life – v. 7 "and my words abide in you" The Bible should be the standard of our daily living.

    1. The Explanation:
"Me" – Christ the Living Word; the very essence of the person of Christ is the life-giving Christ.
"Word" – the written word of God.
We ought to read the Bible with understanding, asking the Spirit of God to move in us
    2. The Encouragement:
If we live out the Living Word, v. 7 says "ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you."
    3. The Examples:
  • Joshua 1:8 – the advice of a general to his people, to meditate on it day and night, to make their way prosperous with good success.
Psalm 1:1-3 – by King David; the result is that we would be "like a tree planted by the rivers, whatsoever we do will prosper.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – the result is that we may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Let us prepare ourselves to be sculptured according to the Word of God.

*How is our life being supported by prayer?

II. A Fruit-Bearing Life – are we growing a fruit-bearing life or just a "maintained life"?

    1. An Indication of God’s Glory
    1. An Imperative – a command for us to bear much fruit.
    2. The Implication – to bear fruit not only by quantity but also by quality.
  • Herein is the Father glorified when we bear fruit. Our fruits should be seen in terms of our character.
  • B. An Indication in Discipleship – fruit-bearing shows that we are true disciples of Christ, His followers of "learners"

    1. The Prerequisite – being a disciple is a prerequisite to fruit bearing.
    2. The Prescription – a solemn warning is given, we ought to serve Christ.
    3. The Partnership – it assures our partnership with Christ as our Teacher. We learn of Him, His character.

    1. Our Mandate – Christ, with all authority, is giving us the command.
    1. To Win Souls For Christ – EVANGELISM

Obedience to the command means people would go to heaven.
We are accountable to the souls of others

      B. To Build Them Up – EDIFICATION

    Commitment To Excellence
    Pastor Arthur P. Ornias
    Senior Pastor
    June 23, 2002

    Main Text: Philippians 1:9 – 21

    1. Commitment To Building The Church on God’s PURPOSES.
    1. Operating on God’s Purposes – following the Purpose Statement of our Church
What is the purpose of the Church – to carry out the order of Christ: "go and make disciples of all nations."

II. Commitment To Work in the POWER of the Holy Spirit.
We let the power of the Holy Spirit work in us through prayer.

III. Commitment To Expect PRODUCTS for God.

  • We should not forget the result of our work. Keep the goal in mind, the end-results, which are the fruits of our labors. We can then know if we are becoming efficient and effective workers.
When we expect results we make God "Big" in our lives, bigger than our burdens.

    The Zeal For God
Pastor Jihanry Senina - Student Worker
    Vesper Service June 23, 2002

    Main Text: Acts 17:16 – 17

***Zeal is the desire to do something, with enthusiasm, an active desire. It was the spirit of Paul when he visited Athens.

    1. The Reason for his zeal for God.
  • Despite the fact that Athens was then devoted to pagan philosophy and idolatry.
    1. Paul only saw a city of idols.
    2. Paul saw the sin of idolatry among the people. The zeal of Athens then was on false religion.
1 John 5:21 tells us to keep ourselves from idols or anything that we prioritize over God.
The intensity of sin – as Athens was fully given to idolatry.
    3. Paul saw the need of Athens as he was moved with deep pity for their lost souls.
  • We should be able to see the deteriorating condition of people around us, to reach out to them, bring about our zeal for God.
  • II. Paul’s Zeal Was Put Into Action

  • Paul taught Jesus at the synagogues as well as in the market places where philosophers debated. Paul’s zeal was shown inside and outside the church.

The result of our zeal should be activity (not passivity)

  • ***We should cultivate the zeal that we have for God, exercise it, asking God where we could practice our stewardship for the cause of Christ.

    The Order Of The Towel
    Pastor Arthur P. Ornias
    Senior Pastor
    June 30, 2002

    Main Text: John 13:1 - 17

***The "towel" is an illustration of service. It is a piece of garment commonly used by servants for the purpose of taking away dirt from the feet of their masters.
***How should we really serve our God?

    1. Serve out of Love – God is asking us to love Him more.
We ought to be willing to do everything to serve God. We ought to serve God’s people as a sign of our love for Him.
    2. Serve with Security – v. 3
The Father gave everything to Christ. Christ, in turn, is giving His people security
    3. Serve with a Higher Cause – v. 10
As it was illustrated to Peter, the "washing of feet" is our commission to a higher calling, the calling of service.
    4. Serve without Regrets – v. 17
  • The apostles died without regrets in their lives offered to Christ. For them it was worthy to die for Christ.
  • ***Would we be willing to serve the Lord even in times of persecutions, trials or adversities?
