Pack 1703 Pinewood Derby Committee encourages all Cub Scouts to do their best in building their own cars and to have FUN with this event. To increase overall Cub Scout participation, a new Stock Class has been added to the previous Modified Class, bringing to three the race categories: Modified Class for Tiger Cubs, Modified Class for Cub Scouts, and Stock Class for both Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts. We want to see everyone participate in the race this year. Remember: Cars that have raced in previous years are not permitted! NEW RULES FOR 2005 No physical modification of any kind to wheels will be allowed. You may use graphite. This rule is in effect to be consistent with the Northridge District Derby. As always, the Pinewood Derby Committee will have the sole discretion in the interpretation of these rules. Awards: · Modified Class for Tiger Cubs - Trophies for 1st 2nd and 3rd Place · Modified Class for Cub Scouts - Trophies for 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th Place · Stock Class for both Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts - Trophy for 1st Place only · Pinewood Derby patches will be given to each Cub Scout and Tiger Cub who participates. · Recognition Awards will be presented for the following categories in the Modified Class: Most Creative, Most Aerodynamic, Most Unusual and Cub Scout-voted Favorite Pinewood Derby Car. Special Rules for New Stock Class: In addition to the regular pinewood derby rules theses additional rules apply to the Stock Class · You must assemble your entire car at the Inspection on February 17, 2003 using your own supplies. Any car assembled or prepared in any way prior to the Inspection will be considered as a Modified Class car. · Your car must be completely dry before being turned in for inspection. Therefore the use of paint and glue is strongly discouraged. · Some sanding is OK, but you won't have much time. · Use of graphite on wheels and axles is OK. · No modification of wheels will be allowed. · You must not leave a mess in the Cafetorium. In general, the Stock Class car is one where the block of wood is decorated, the axles are installed, and it races. Race Date: The Pinewood Derby race will take place at the February Pack Meeting on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 starting at 6:30 PM in the Leonard Elementary School Cafetorium. The decision about who advances to the District Finals race will to be held on March 27, 2005 will depend on the rules determined by the race sponsors and will be comminicated to the affected Tigers and/ or Cub Scouts at a later date. INSPECTION & STOCK CLASS BUILD: · All cars, both stock and modified, must pass inspection prior to competition. · The Pinewood Derby Committee and inspectors have the sole discretion in the interpretation of these rules and have the rights to disqualify any car that does not meet them. · Vehicle weigh in and inspection will be held on Monday, February 21, 2005 between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM. You may arrive anytime between those times. · Any Tiger Cub or Cub Scout wishing to participate in the Stock Class must bring their unmodified Pinewood Derby Kit to the Inspection and build their car completely on-site. · All cars will be kept after inspection by the Pinewood Derby Committee and will not be returned until after the races. Please remember to bring your own tools, weights, screws, drills, glue, etc to make any necessary modifications during weigh-in and inspection. Tools and supplies will not be provided for either class. · All cars turned in at inspection must be marked with the scout's name and car number PINEWOOD DERBY CAR RULES FOR BOTH STOCK & MODIFIED CLASSES: · ID: Your assigned car number must appear on the top of the car. Put your name on the bottom of the car. · LENGTH: The overall length must not exceed 7 inches. · WIDTH: The overall width must not exceed 2-3/4 inches. · HEIGHT: The overall height must not exceed 5 inches. · WIDTH BETWEEN WHEELS: The minimum width between the wheels must be 1-3/4 inches. · GROUND CLEARANCE: The ground clearance (distance between the ground and the bottom side of the car) must be a minimum of 3/8 inch. (THIS IS VERY CRITICAL!!!) · WHEELBASE: The distance between the axle centerlines must be between 4 inches and 4-1/2 inches. · WHEELS & AXLES: Must be the official BSA material provided in the kits. Wheel bearings, washers, bushings, and wheel covers are prohibited. Wheels and axles may be sanded and smoothed. ·NEW RULE Wheels may not be physically modified( e.g. no sanding). · NOSE: The nose can not be pointed or concave as viewed from above and must be at least 1/2 inch wide. · LUBE: Only dry powder lubricants such as graphite or silicon are permissible. All lubricants must be applied prior to car inspection and impound. You will not be permitted to add lubricant on race day. · SPRINGS: No springs or any other starting devices are permitted. The car must be free-wheeling. · WEIGHT: Can not exceed 5 ounces (141.75 grams, to be exact!). No loose materials of any kind are allowed on the car. (Metal may be used to add weight but it must be securely attached to the car.) IMPORTANT TIPS: ¨ The cub and parent should make the car together as a project. Have fun! ¨ Know the derby rules. Being disqualified is not fun. Call if you have any questions. ¨ Safety first! Know the safety rules when using tools. Stock Class- Car must be built during Inspection. Hace your box opened by a Pinewood Derby Committee member to avoid any potential challenges. |
