Supplies:

  • 10"x13" piece of polyester fleece or very thin batting (fusible fleece is nice)
  • 10"x13" piece of backing fabric, cotton to blend with prints or plain muslin
  • 1/4 yd or 45" wide coordinating cotton calico prints (will make 7 to 9 bags if you piece the strips and start each bag with a different strip)
  • 12" (or larger) polyester zipper(no metal zippers) to go with calico prints
  • 5" of 1/4 ribbon
  • Thread

1. Fuse or baste fleece to backing fabric. Fuse baste with scraps of fusible web.
2. On the fleece side start strip piecing, use a scant 1/4 seam even with one long edge. First strip will be repeated 3 times. All others will be repeated twice. Begin and end with the same strip. Press as you flip each strip to the right side.
3. Trim rectangle even with the last strip. Rectangle should be about 9 1/2"x12 1/2".
4. Curve each short end.Go to Template
5. Serge or zig-zag around all edges.
6. Apply zipper to curved ends using exposed method. Center the zipper so that there is extra on each end. Excess will be trimmed later. Also, I like to zig-zag the edges of the zipper to the bag to prevent the zipper tape from curling and getting caught in the zipper teeth.
7. With the zipper pull opened slightly, fold bag in half and stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance to make sides. Stitch over zipper ends several times to secure and trim ends (make sure you can open and close zipper before trimming zipper ends.)
8. Square bottom by stitching across the triangle formed by matching the side seam to bottom crease. The base of this triangle should be about 2" or the width of the distance across the outside strip twice.
9. Insert ribbon in zipper pull and tie with a half hitch or a slip knot with both ends together.
10. Seal ends of ribbon with seam sealant.

NOTE: Another strip piecing variation, as seen in this example,

can be done with two coordinating prints. Cut the strips 1 1/2 inches and 2 inches wide. Use 3 wide strips and 4 narrow strips. Please observe the scant 1/4 inch seam allowance or use more strips to achieve the desired finished size. Of course you can make any size bag that you wish.
