My father is from Palo and my mother from Alang-Alang, my parents took us to Manila when we were very young to permanently live there. My parents both died very young and we never get to see and know our relations back in Palo. My father's name is Pacifico Roca and my mother Ursula Dacillo, they would be about 75 years old now if they're alive. Anyone that knows them or with a surname Roca, maybe you're my cousin. But don't worry too much Mr. Diamante is still running the show here in our town, the suspension orders were also put on hold (Temporary Restraining Orders or TRO!) - thanks to his connections. The ra ios here in Tacloban have been batting him day and night ... but to no avail. He seem connected alright. He even escaped another Warrant of Arrest for two counts of criminal cases on grave abuse of authority filed by Ms. Corinna Montejo-Ilagan, who Mr. Di mante terminated illegally in 1998 together with 3 others. He paid the bailbond 20 days before issuance of the order of arrest! How did that happen -- well, we are back to the old adage "only in the Philippines"-- this is a novel act of foretelling ones f ture! As to Uswag Palo! and educating the electorate, well, we have done our best, but again our best wasn't really that good enough. We won't stop to educate the Paloanos until we've got what PALO realy deserves! The good old days when Palo was the center of t e culture and arts of Leyte (and the region,even) must be reclaimed. Mr. Diamante or Mr. Sevilla, it doesn't matter as long as the people knows who they voted for and knows how to reclaim the power that they bestow on their leaders. This jail will house the prisoners from the 7 municipalities in the 1s district. This jail was constructed without the necessary permit and papers, but the blessing of the "almighty mayor" Diamante. He even challenged us to go to court ... and we will after the Sangguniang Bayan issues its ruling. Another issue now brewing is the plan to make the plaza (grassy spot) sorrounding the Sacred Heart Monument a Parking Area and CR. The Pastoral Council has already denied the "almighty mayor" the blessing to desecrate the place, and again contend that the plaza is a municipal park and he can do anything with it. I am a Paloano by birth and still has strong roots in there. I am just reacting to what has been happening there lately re- mayoralty position. What is really the exact situation? Does it mean that there is nobody "managing" the town right now? I guess with the little information I know, all these started with the "election" of Mr. Diamante over the incumbent Mr. Sevilla. I have heard stories from relatives and friends of the massive vote-buying that happened during that election in May 1998. Wa it P400 per voter or higher? I had the opportunity to talk to some folks there and say some people were really waiting for a politician to offer them money in exchange for their vote. If the results of the election tally showed that Mr. Diamante had more votes than Mr. Sevilla, then Comelec has to declare him a winner. I am not passing judgment on either of the two persons but I guess we have to educate the people/townsfolk of their sacred vote. The people has to be aware that "money is not the solution to their problems". As far as Mr. Diamante's cases/suspensions, he has to deal with it himself but in reality it is the people that is suffering. It is the PEOPLE THAT ARE REALLY THE LOSERS. I don't know what your organization (USWAG PALO) really stands but I believe you have to start with a townwide campaign on the basics of democracy; that it is the people/townsfolk that really matter not the politician whoever he is. We have to rise above petty partisanship and start to look for the best interest of Palo if we ever want the town to prosper into the 21st century.

First of all, my congratulations to the Cathedral Pastor, Msgr. Ben Catilogo, my classmate for that landmark he has spearheaded in erecting -- the Jubilee Tower. The Jubilee Cross, which had gone around the archdiocese during the entire year and had stopped at every parish, is now enshrined inside this three-layered edifice. The landmark is a itting symbol of the archdiocese's oneness with the Universal Church in celebrating the year 2000 as the Jubilee Year of Redemption. Let me also take this occasion to announce the solemn investiture of seven of our seminarians of Sacred Heart Seminary. It will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2000 at the SHS Chapel. The sotanandi are the following: Pedro Gempis, Jr. of Tanauan; Al Lagahi of Julita; Armando Ligutan of Carigara; Christopher Joy Milado of Tacloban City; Ryan Remandaban of Calubian; Leon Rojas IV of Tacloban City and Benito Trocino, Jr. of Burauen.
