The Grange
is a uniquely American institution. It has no relationship with the many castles, stately homes, historic buildings and hotels
found in the The
agricultural nexus of the word "grange" is a connection to the many
references to a Grange in history. The Order of Patrons of Husbandry was
founded in 1867 by an American Oliver Hudson Kelley. The Grange
history is rooted most famously in the Granger Movement of the late
nineteenth century. Those were the days of struggle to recover from the War
Between the States, with the rail road monopolies, the middlemen and other
interests which were inapposite to those of rural and farm interests. Excerpts
from the 1874 Declaration of Purposes of
the Grange summarize the mood out of which the Granger Movement grew. We long to
see the antagonism between labor and capital removed by common consent, and
by an enlightened statesmanship worthy of the nineteenth century. We are
opposed to excessive salaries, high rates of interest and exorbitant profits
in trade. They greatly increase our burdens and do not bear a proper
proportion to the profits of producers. We must
dispense with a surplus of middlemen, not that we are unfriendly to them, but
we do not need them. Their surplus and their executions diminish our profits. We are not
enemies of railroads, navigable and irrigating canals, nor
of any corporation that will advance our industrial interests, nor of
any laboring classes. . . . We are not enemies to capital, but we oppose the
tyranny of monopolies. We desire
a proper equality, equity, and fairness; protection for the weak; restraint
upon the strong; in short, justly distributed burdens and justly distributed
power. These are The
Granger Movement resulted in some political success, some temporary and
permanent reform including federal regulation of rail road monopolies after
the famous case of Munn v. Illinois. This site
