The right hand side long banner ad is very unbalancing; don't you think? Internet Explorer offers a good mechanism to customize your security and it also gets rid of blinking ads that cause headaches and pop-ups that cover the entire web page. I use what works for me from many of the online versions of recommended security settings. You need to work with it for a while to find the settings you like. At first it may seem time consuming to click no, no, no but I did stop-watch tests and it is faster than waiting for blinking ads to load or removing ads that are blocking the page.
Currently these are my settings (which are always subject to personal revision). I surf by keeping my right hand on the mouse and a left finger or 2 on the enter button so that I can easily click no. On most prompts I click no. If I know it's a safe site that requires a script to search a database like Ellis Island I click yes. I do not use trusted zones because even trusted zones have blinking ads. At first you will need to take some time to analyze what works best "for you" with a yes or a no response. For instance if you are looking at a .PDF file online you must click yes. If a safe site has something you want to view that requires a yes, then click your refresh button and then yes. Mostly I no longer visit sites that require a yes to view as they are generally full of flash and things that take too long to load. Also, after testing all the Operating Systems I returned to Windows 2nd Edition & IE version 5.0 because it has less security issues. I use the Internet for genealogy & health research. I watch movies for visual entertainment so I don't need the "cutesy-poo" / bubble gum on XP and other OSs. Plus all the newer Microsoft OSs all have Security Problems and all their patches have holes so either switch to Linux or go back to Win98SE and IE 5.0.
Access the Security Settings by selecting Tools > Internet Options from the Internet Explorer menu; choose the Security tab and click Custom Level.

Stop blinking ads on Internet Explorer
Go to advanced settings in Tools > Internet Options and uncheck "Play Animations" to prevent eyestrain & headaches.I also disable Windows Scripting Host although this causes some websites to function poorly. Disabling it will stop some computer worms.
Help educate advertisers
PLEASE click on text ads or other ads that don't block your screen or give blinking light headaches. Totally ignore offensive blinking ads or ads that cover the screen. Also, if you don't use high-security setting you can still close many ads by holding down the 'control-alt-delete' keys simultaneously. It will close the ad window, stop gator, comet cursor, obnoxious toolbars, etc from downloading onto your computer. Read about it first before trying it.Face it:
The Internet is Advertiser Driven. Ads are here to stay so even if you do not want anything they are selling if more people click on the ads that do NOT blink or block the screen eventually the "Ad People" will get the consumer message. Ignore any obnoxious ads and click on ones that are non-offensive. Also, delete your cookies & temporary internet files regularly so they can't track your surfing and keep feeding you the same kind of ads just because you visited something once and they have a record of it.
If the settings are too computer intense for you then there are many good programs out there that kill Spyware, Ad Snooping and Pop-Ups. Don't get a junk program or some of those "free" programs that actually contain SpyWare:
