In the Fall of 2004, a group of Filipino students at Skyline College, came together to form a club whose goal was to enrich the community with the Filipino and Filipino-American culture. The club has come to be known as the Filipino Student Union, or FSU for short. With the help of the already existing Kababayan Program, the group started off strong with various activities such as food sales, a talent showcase, and special guest presentations. Already, the FSU is one of the most active organizations at Skyline College. Now their next goal is to host their own Pilipino Cultural Night.
Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN), thus far, is FSU’s biggest endeavor. The club, though not even a year-old, has the motivation to make this event happen. The event is meant to celebrate about the Filipino and Filipino-American experience with those who have the motivation to learn about it. It is not common for a community college to take on a big event like PCN, but one of the club’s goals is to break that trend. Their belief is that just because Skyline College is small compared to the UC’s and State Universities, does not mean it can’t accomplish a huge feat. This will be the first-ever PCN hosted at Skyline College; therefore, the Filipino Student Union and the PCN CORE dare the Skyline College community to learn about the Filipino history while they are making history themselves.
The Filipino Student Union hopes that their club will remain at Skyline College even when most of the present members are no longer attending Skyline. It is important for the campus to have a cultural organizations like the Filipino Student Union so that future students will find a safe-haven to bond and interact with other students. The Kababayan Program and Filipino Student Union gives the Skyline community a link to the Filipino culture; therefore, the community can experience the culture themselves. They can sample Philippine delicacies at food sales or show their talent at showcases and Pilipino Cultural Night. The current members of FSU hope that future members will continue the FSU traditions and that the organization they created will be there for many years to come.
